Book Does the Single Eu Market Really Require a Single Currency

Download or read book Does the Single Eu Market Really Require a Single Currency written by Veronica Hagenfeldt and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, University of Edinburgh (School of Law), course: Economics and Policy of European Integration, language: English, abstract: Part I of this paper will illustrate that although the currency union signified the next significant step along the European integration ladder that was built already back in 1958, it must be recognised that the single market is not yet fully established in Europe. Hence the phrasing of the title question suggests the reading of whether or not the single currency is absolutely necessary for the completion of the single market. Part II is dedicated to the central aim of this paper, namely to assess to what extent the common currency furthers, or indeed counteracts, the achievement of the fundamental single market objective. While this essay goes to lengths in highlighting the desirability of the single currency and its many benefits that help further the achievement of the single market, it does however maintain that the currency union is not absolutely necessary for the establishment of the common market. Indeed, as has been noted, "it is possible to have a single market without a single currency". Furthermore, as will be shown in the forthcoming sections of Part II, there are even situations in which the single currency might be harmful to the single market and to the Union. Although the answer to the title question of whether a single currency is really required must necessarily be in the negative since the single market could potentially exist without the euro, this essay will conduct an extensive evaluation of the successes and failures of the euro and the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) to further the single market objective in order to illustrate that the euro has nonetheless both enabled it to function much more efficiently and helped to bring European economic and political integration to previously unknown levels. In this sense the single market

Book Regional Integration in West Africa

Download or read book Regional Integration in West Africa written by Eswar Prasad and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " Assessing the potential benefits and risks of a currency union Leaders of the fifteen-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have set a goal of achieving a monetary and currency union by late 2020. Although some progress has been made toward achieving this ambitious goal, major challenges remain if the region is to realize the necessary macroeconomic convergence and establish the required institutional framework in a relatively short period of time. The proposed union offers many potential benefits, especially for countries with historically high inflation rates and weak central banks. But, as implementation of the euro over the past two decades has shown, folding multiple currencies, representing disparate economies, into a common union comes with significant costs, along with operational challenges and transitional risks. All these potential negatives must be considered carefully by ECOWAS leaders seeking tomeet a self-imposed deadline. This book, by two leading experts on economics and Africa, makes a significant analytical contribution to the debates now under way about how ECOWAS could achieve and manage its currency union, andthe ramifications for the African continent. Book A single currency for Europe is a good thing and the sooner the UK joins the Euro the better Do you agree

Download or read book A single currency for Europe is a good thing and the sooner the UK joins the Euro the better Do you agree written by Matthias Kammerer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2008-01-23 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject Economics - Monetary theory and policy, grade: 1,0, University of Northampton, course: European Policy Issues, language: English, abstract: On 1.January 1999 the European single currency, the Euro, was officially introduced. At that point eleven member states wanted to be a part of this significant leap and fulfilled the necessary criteria determined by the Growth & Stability-Pact (GSP) in 1997. Greece as the twelfth member joined in 2001. On 1.January 2002 the Euro was distributed and became the single currency for the partaking countries. This date marked only the final step in a long history of desire for a fixed exchange rate system and a monetary union within Europe – with a single currency as the summit of this ambition. In this essay I want to analyse if a single currency is a good thing for the EU and what the drawbacks are respectively. Later I will deal with the question if the UK should join the Euro soon – if at all. ...

Book The Single Currency and European Citizenship

Download or read book The Single Currency and European Citizenship written by Giovanni Moro and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 2002, the Euro is now the currency of 17 countries used by over 335 million people daily. Although the single currency is much discussed in terms of macroeconomics and global finances, policymakers rarely address its impact on European citizenship in social, cultural, political, and everyday life economics terms. This hidden side of the single currency is the focus of the essays, which use various approaches, from economic history and political sociology to citizenship and legitimacy, to reveal the connections between the Euro and European citizenship. This timely contribution by renowned experts provides a greater understanding of the Euro at a time when it is not clear whether it should be celebrated or commemorated, and looks into aspects of the single currency that are the base of the social trust that supports it and that is at stake in the present crisis. It will be an essential tool to anyone studying the political, social, and economic development of the E.U.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why was the euro created and how does it work? What caused the difficulties of the European currency and what solutions are being adopted to stop the instability that is frightening the entire financial world? The dream of a single currency and a single market has been nurtured in Europe for many generations. The euro has brought Europe considerable advantages, but it has also profoundly changed the balance of European economies. In this essay we will start from the base, explaining what the Euro is and what are the causes that have put it in crisis. We will see what strategies have been adopted to overcome the most difficult and dramatic moments experienced by the economy since the birth of the euro, and we will explain what proposals and initiatives individual countries have put forward to remedy the difficult situation and to relaunch the role of the euro on the continent and in the world.

Book The Single European Currency

Download or read book The Single European Currency written by William Wickham and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the economic and political implications of Britain's possible adoption of the Euro in a manner intended to be intelligible to laymen as well as professionals. It was begun at a time when there seemed to be an acute public need for a rational analysis of the issue and it initially explores some observations about economic behaviour drawn from a lifetime's work experience. As well as reviewing the UK Treasury's later findings on the question it assesses its important political aspects, including the recently rejected EU Constitution. Anticipating that China's rise as an economic power could prove the catalyst that induces the countries of the Euro-zone to adopt more market-oriented economic policies, the book insists that the question of Britain's membership of the Euro must continue to be monitored and attacks the apparent intransigence of Conservative Party policy on Europe. Its final pages are devoted to personal political reflections of vital relevance to Britain's long-term future.

Book The Currency of Ideas

Download or read book The Currency of Ideas written by Kathleen R. McNamara and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-30 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have the states of Europe agreed to create an Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and a single European currency? What will decide the fate of this bold project? This book explains why monetary integration has deepened in Europe from the Bretton Woods era to the present day. McNamara argues that the development of a neoliberal economic policy consensus among European leaders in the years after the first oil crisis was crucial to stability in the European Monetary System and progress towards EMU. She identifies two factors, rising capital mobility and changing ideas about the government's proper role in monetary policymaking, as critical to the neoliberal consensus but warns that unresolved social tensions in this consensus may provoke a political backlash against EMU and its neoliberal reforms.McNamara's findings are relevant not only to European monetary integration, but to more general questions about the effects of international capital flows on states. Although this book delineates a range of constraints created by economic interdependence, McNamara rejects the notion that international market forces simply dictate government policy choice. She demonstrates that the process of neoliberal policy change is a historically dependent one, shaped by policymakers' shared beliefs and interpretations of their experiences in the global economy.

Book The Euro How a Common Currency Threatens the Future of Europe

Download or read book The Euro How a Common Currency Threatens the Future of Europe written by Joseph E. Stiglitz and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nobel Prize–winning economist and best-selling author explains why saving Europe may mean abandoning the euro. When Nobel Prize–winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz posed this question in the original edition of The Euro, he lent much-needed clarity to a global debate that continues to this day. The euro was supposed to unify Europe and promote prosperity; in fact, it has done just the opposite. To save the European project, the euro may have to be abandoned. Since 2010, many of the 19 countries of Europe that share the euro currency—the eurozone—have been rocked by debt crises and mired in lasting stagnation, and the divergence between stronger and weaker economies has accelerated. In The Euro, Joseph E. Stiglitz explains precisely why the eurozone has performed so poorly, so different from the expectations at its launch: at the core of the failure is the structure of the eurozone itself, the rules by which it is governed. Stiglitz reveals three potential paths forward: drastic structural reforms, not of the individual countries, but of the eurozone; a well-managed dissolution of the euro; or a bold new system dubbed the “flexible euro.” With trenchant analysis—and brand new material on Brexit—The Euro is urgent and timely reading.
