Book The Nordic Countries and the European Union

Download or read book The Nordic Countries and the European Union written by Caroline Howard Grøn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In European policy-making, the Nordic countries are often viewed as a relatively coherent bloc; in international and European affairs the Nordic position has traditionally been conditioned on being different from and better than Europe. This book offers a coherent, original and systematic comparative analysis of the relationship between the Nordic countries and the European Union over the past two decades. It looks at the historical frame, institutions and policy areas, addressing both traditional EU areas such as agriculture and more nascent areas affecting the domestic and foreign policies of the Nordic countries. In doing so, it examines how the Nordic approach to European policy-making has developed and explains why the Nordic countries are similar in some respects while differing in others when engaging with EU institutions. In highlighting the similarities and differences between the Nordic countries it explores what lessons – positive and negative – may be drawn from this approach for the Nordic countries and other small states. This book will be of interest to scholars, students and practitioners engaged with the Nordic Countries, EU politics and policy-making, European politics and comparative politics.

Book Britain and Norway in Europe Since 1945

Download or read book Britain and Norway in Europe Since 1945 written by Geir K. Almlid and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Britain and Norway in Europe from 1945 through to the former's departure from the European Union in 2020. It compares their European relations and investigates their bilateral relationship within the contexts of security, trade and, above all, European integration. Britain and Norway are outsiders in Europe, and they have both been sceptical of the continental federalist approach to European integration. The question of membership itself has been highly controversial in both countries: the public has been divided on the issue; it has plagued political parties and governments; and prime ministers have resigned over European issues. This book explores why these countries have struggled so deeply with the idea of Europe since 1945, and looks ahead to how the relationship between Britain and Norway might develop after Brexit.

Book European Integration and National Identity

Download or read book European Integration and National Identity written by Lene Hansen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four Nordic countries, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, have all held referenda on their relationship to the European Union in the 1990's. These referenda catalysed heated debates: should Finland and Sweden give up neutrality? Should Denmark follow the European Union's move towards higher degrees of integration? And, had there been enough change in Norway to reverse the rejection of European Community membership in 1972? These key questions about the future of European integration are addressed in this highly topical book by examining the crucial role played by national identity.

Book Fishing in Troubled Waters Iceland Norway and the Question of EU Membership

Download or read book Fishing in Troubled Waters Iceland Norway and the Question of EU Membership written by Ron Böhler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Region: Western Europe, grade: 1.3, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: This study assumes the validity of liberal intergovernmentalism (LI) theory and follows Ingebritsen‘s sectoral approach. The thesis under investigation is formulated as follows: While the fishing industry in Norway constantly succeed in intervening in national policy-making towards European integration, Icelandic fishermen lost access to governing parties after the sudden change of government in 2009. Consequently they failed to prevent the government from filing the EU membership application. Iceland and Norway have traditionally been referred to as “outsiders” or even “outliers” in the process of European Integration (Miles 2005). While Iceland had not applied for EU membership until 2009, the Norwegian public rejected the country ́s accession twofold in a referendum, first 1972 and again in 1994. Since the mid-1990s, both states have nevertheless been highly affiliated to the EU project through their participation in the European Economic Area (EEA). Additionally, both countries experienced similar developments concerning political representation since 1994, with long-serving Eurosceptic center-right governments, which were replaced by pro-European center-left governments after the turn of the millennium. The electorate in Norway brought a coalition government of Labor, Socialists and Center Party to power in 2005, which was reelected four years later. In Iceland, a coalition of social democrats and Left-Green Movement replaced the conservative government in 2009. How did it come that Iceland for the first time in history applied for EU membership after the change in government while Norway did not?

Book Norway Outside the European Union

Download or read book Norway Outside the European Union written by Clive Archer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1994 the Norwegian electorate rejected membership of the European Union. Professor Archer examines the background to this decision both in terms of an expression of interests within Norway and in terms of national feeling. He then investigates the subsequent interaction between Norway and the EU through the European Economic Area (EEA) - which allowed Norway access to the EU's markets; the Schengen agreement - dealing with justice and border matters and the Common Foreign and Security Policy. It includes discussion of policies that have had a particular effect on Norway, such as those of the gas directive, fisheries and the sale of alcohol and looks at how Norway has adapted itself to EU policy, noting the cases where the country has dug in its heels and when it has been acquiescent. This book will appeal to students and researchers with an interest in European integration and Nordic studies in general.

Book The European Community

Download or read book The European Community written by Johan Galtung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1973, analyses the European Community in a global perspective. It asks and answers two main questions: what does the European Community mean to the masses of the world, and what does it mean to the world community in general? Most critical studies of the EC were made from an internal point of view, and this book is rare in having an external perspective. The author discussed the EC with diverse audiences in 16 countries, and his analyses are invaluable in putting the European project in an international context.
