Download or read book The Plays of Euripides Vol 1 written by Edward P. Coleridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Euripides, Vol. 1: Translated Into English Prose From the d104 of Paley In preparing the following translation of the plays of Euripides I have followed the text of Paley as it stands in the "Cambridge Greek and Latin d104s' series" 1869. Similarly, too, the order of the plays conforms to his arrangement. Without going into lengthy details for my choice of this text, I may briefly mention a few reasons for having selected it. First, there is the accessibility of this edition; secondly, its very general use to-day by the mass of English readers, in preference to the once popular "Poetae Scenici " of W, Dindorf; and thirdly, its superiority in many respects to all previous editions of the complete body of plays, due partly to its greater fidelity to the MSS. readings, partly to the more metrical arrangements of choral passages. In some ways, perhaps, the adoption of a particular text saves the translator much trouble by precluding him from straying far afield into the region of textual emendation; but, at the same time, it not unfrequently forces him into direct opposition to his own opinion, if he consents to follow it without any deviation and to yield implicit obedience to its authority. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euripides, Vol. 1 The pleasure which we receive from the admired writings of antiquity in a manner allies our minds to the minds of the illustrious writers; we contract a love for them, and interest ourselves in every circumstance that interested them. This affection, which arises from the love of excellence, natural to the well-disposed mind, induces us to inquire after even the minutest particulars of their lives and fortunes; and Homer, poor and blind, is not less the object of our attention than his hero Achilles. Resting for support on a stafl; I have come to the roofed dwellings, and the chambers of the aged,11 like the white swan, the bard of grievous dirges, a mere word, and dim-visaged phantom of nightly dreams,12 tremulous indeed, yet with good will. 0 fatherless children, of your sire, 0 old man, and thou too, hapless mother, who bemoanest thy husband in the dwellings of Hades. Weary not yourselves, letting go your foot and tired ankle, like a yoke-bearing steed up a rocky steppe,13 bearing the weight of his foot, driven in a waggon. Take hold of the hands and garments [of me, an old man] whose weak footstep is failing; and do thou aged escort me aged, thou with whom, while young, in the toils of equals, there were fellow-shields (and) young spears, II4 no disgrace to our most glorious country. See how the terrible-looking beams from the eyes [of these children] are like their sire's but yet misfortune has not failed from these children, nor is their beauty gone.15 0 Greece, of what, ah of what allies wilt thou be deprived, after having destroyed these! It does seem strange that the singers who during the present century have enriched English poetry with wealth of metrical variety lavish beyond all precedent, should have lived in vain for the translator of the Greek drama, especially since those magnificent notes of chorus-music were struck by the author Of Atalanta in Calydon and Erechtheus, after which the good Old Pindaric - Ode pattern, with its guilelessly capricious alternations of longs and shorts, seems curiously out Of date. • ISBN : 0812983092
  • Pages : 866 pages

Download or read book The Greek Plays written by Sophocles and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark anthology of the masterpieces of Greek drama, featuring all-new, highly accessible translations of some of the world’s most beloved plays, including Agamemnon, Prometheus Bound, Bacchae, Electra, Medea, Antigone, and Oedipus the King Featuring translations by Emily Wilson, Frank Nisetich, Sarah Ruden, Rachel Kitzinger, Mary Lefkowitz, and James Romm The great plays of Ancient Greece are among the most enduring and important legacies of the Western world. Not only is the influence of Greek drama palpable in everything from Shakespeare to modern television, the insights contained in Greek tragedy have shaped our perceptions of the nature of human life. Poets, philosophers, and politicians have long borrowed and adapted the ideas and language of Greek drama to help them make sense of their own times. This exciting curated anthology features a cross section of the most popular—and most widely taught—plays in the Greek canon. Fresh translations into contemporary English breathe new life into the texts while capturing, as faithfully as possible, their original meaning. This outstanding collection also offers short biographies of the playwrights, enlightening and clarifying introductions to the plays, and helpful annotations at the bottom of each page. Appendices by prominent classicists on such topics as “Greek Drama and Politics,” “The Theater of Dionysus,” and “Plato and Aristotle on Tragedy” give the reader a rich contextual background. A detailed time line of the dramas, as well as a list of adaptations of Greek drama to literature, stage, and film from the time of Seneca to the present, helps chart the history of Greek tragedy and illustrate its influence on our culture from the Roman Empire to the present day. With a veritable who’s who of today’s most renowned and distinguished classical translators, The Greek Plays is certain to be the definitive text for years to come. Praise for The Greek Plays “Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm deftly have gathered strong new translations from Frank Nisetich, Sarah Ruden, Rachel Kitzinger, Emily Wilson, as well as from Mary Lefkowitz and James Romm themselves. There is a freshness and pungency in these new translations that should last a long time. I admire also the introductions to the plays and the biographies and annotations provided. Closing essays by five distinguished classicists—the brilliant Daniel Mendelsohn and the equally skilled David Rosenbloom, Joshua Billings, Mary-Kay Gamel, and Gregory Hays—all enlightened me. This seems to me a helpful light into our gathering darkness.”—Harold Bloom

Book excerpt: The first playwright of democracy, Euripides wrote with enduring insight and biting satire about social and political problems of Athenian life. In contrast to his contemporaries, he brought an exciting--and, to the Greeks, a stunning--realism to the "pure and noble form" of tragedy. For the first time in history, heroes and heroines on the stage were not idealized: as Sophocles himself said, Euripides shows people not as they ought to be, but as they actually are.

It may be hoped that, with his edition of the Athenian poet, a new epoch begins for the estima tion of him by classical as well as English readers. Mr Paley evidently regards Euripides in a very similar light to that taken of him by Ben J onson - that he is sometimes peccant, as he is most times perfect. Book Euripides Cyclops Vol 1

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euripides Cyclops, Vol. 1: Introduction and d104 I. Its origin. Like all the dramatic products of the Greek genius, the satyric drama carries us back to the festivals and worship of Dionysus. The joyous rites of the wine-god called forth all the mimetic instincts of the race, and the worshippers fancied themselves to be followers in his train, and impersonated his favourite attendants. But all along, there seem to have been two aspects of these festivals, a joyful and a sad; for had not Bacchus himself had his adverse, as well as his prosperous times? and were not the wealth and fertility of spring-tide - which the god symbolized - tempered and chastened by the gloom and seeming barrenness of winter? The wine-god, too, was the dispenser both of joy and sorrow to his votaries; hence his praises were sung sometimes in an exalted, sometimes in a minor key. Doubtless, too, there would be corresponding differences between his winter and his spring festivals: and the joyousness of the dithyramb would be at times exchanged for a sadder and more subdued tone.
