Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy of Abraham Lincoln: Sixteenth President of the United States Dear Sir: At a meeting of the Committee of Arrangements, it was voted that we louder you our thanks for the Eulogy pronounced by you upon the late President of the United States, and, in accordance with another vote, and a general desire of the citizens of Saco to have the same published in pamphlet form for preservation and reference hereafter by the community, we request, if convenient and agreeable to yourself, a copy of the same for publication. Gentlemen: When on Monday, the 17th inst., you requested me to pronounce a eulogy of the late President of the United States, upon the 17th inst., the shortness of time and the great depression of feeling consequent upon the awful intelligence of his death, then just received, forcibly impressed me with the great embarrassment under which I should undertake the task. Nevertheless, as I then toll you, I did not feel at liberty to decline the request. If the sentiments by me expressed upon that occasion are in sympathy with the feelings of the community, as 1 trust they are, I shall cheerfully furnish you with a copy of the same for publication, trusting the circumstance under which they were produced will be considered some apology for their imperfect presentation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln, Late President of the United States: Delivered Before the Citizens of Bangor, on the Day of the National Fast, June 1st, 1865 Our popular Government has Often been called an experiment. Two points in it our people have already settled: the successful establisliing and the successful administering Of it. One still remains - its successful maintenance againt a formidable internal attempt to overthrow it. Such was the language Of President Lincoln in his first message to Congress. The third and last experiment, Of which he spoke, has been fairly and successfully tried. It has been demonstated to the world, to use again his prophetic words that those who can fairlycarry an election can also sup press a rebellion; that ballots are the rightful and peaceful successors of bullets; and that when ballots have fairly and constitutionally decided, there can be no successful appeal back to bullets; that there can be no successful appeal except to ballots themselves at succeeding elections. For the triumphant success of this grand experiment the nation is indebted to no one SO much as to Abraham Lincoln. I do not forget his wise counselors. I do not forget the'generals, who in this prolonged struggle have gained glory for them selves and for their country. I do not forget the sol diers, whose steadfast courage took now the form Of patience in suffering, now Of firmness in resistance. Not only here in our little sea-side city, but all along the Atlantic coast, in every port and home, and far out over the wide land, in all its hamlets and cities, from all its valleys and hill-sides and prairies, the voice of lamentation goes up to God. From every craft upon our rivers, from every ship and steamer in our harbors, from every flag-staff on land or sea, our nation's ensign floats at half-mast over hearts that are heavy with grief. The golden shores of the Pacific send an answering echo to the wail of our we. East and West, North and South, sit down together in sackcloth, crying, Put off thy pleasant robes, O daughter of the land, lay aside thy beautiful gar ments for the raiment of grief. For the brave hath gone down to the place of darkness the cedar is bowed in the dust; his leaves are perished. Let the fir tree mourn aloud in Elealeh; let the cedars of Lebanon hang their heads in tears. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Elton Trueblood and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many writers have explored Lincoln's leadership; others have debated Lincoln's ambiguous religious identity. But in this classic work, Christian philosopher and statesman Elton Trueblood reveals how Lincoln's leadership skills flowed directly from his religious convictions—which explains how the president was able to combine what few leaders can hold together: moral resoluteness with a shrewd ability to compromise; confidence in his cause while refusing to succumb to the traps of self-righteousness or triumphalism; and a commitment to victory while never losing sight of his responsibility for—or the humanity of—his enemy. These rich meditations offer deep wisdom and insight on one of the most effective leaders of all time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Promises of the Declaration of Independence: Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln, Delivered Before the Municipal Authorities of the City of Boston, June 1, 1865 In the universe of God there are no accidents. From the fall of a sparrow to the fall of an empire, or the sweep of a planet, all is according to Divine Providence, whose laws are everlasting. It was no accident which gave to his country the patriot whom we now honor. It was no accident which snatched this patriot, so suddenly and so cruelly, from his sublime duties. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord. Perhaps never in history has this Providence been more conspicuous than in that recent procession of events, where the final triumph was wrapt in the gloom of tragedy. It will be our duty to catch the moral of this stupendous drama. For the second time in our history, the country has been summoned by the President to unite, on an appointed day, in commemorating the character and services of the dead. The first was on the death of George Washington, when, as now, a day was set apart for simultaneous eulogy throughout the land, and cities, towns, and villages all vied in tribute. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on the Death of Abraham Lincoln: Delivered Before the City Council and Citizens of Lowell, at Huntington Hall, April 19th, 1865 The nation is bowed down to-day under the weight of a Solemn and appalling sorrow, such as never before rested upon a great people. It is not the presence of death merely, - with that we have become familiar. It is not the loss of a leader only that we mourn, nor of a statesman who had exhibited wisdom in great trials, in vast enterprises of war, and in delicate negotiations for the preservation of peace with foreign countries; but of a twice chosen and twice ordained ruler in whom these great qualities were found, and to which were added the personal courage of the soldier and the moral heroism of the Christian. Download or read book Writing the Gettysburg Address written by Martin P. Johnson and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2015-04-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four score and seven years ago . . . . Are any six words better known, of greater import, or from a more crucial moment in our nation’s history? And yet after 150 years the dramatic and surprising story of how Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address has never been fully told. Until now. Martin Johnson's remarkable work of historical and literary detection illuminates a speech, a man, and a moment in history that we thought we knew. Johnson guides readers on Lincoln’s emotional and intellectual journey to the speaker’s platform, revealing that Lincoln himself experienced writing the Gettysburg Address as an eventful process that was filled with the possibility of failure, but which he knew resulted finally in success beyond expectation. We listen as Lincoln talks with the cemetery designer about the ideals and aspirations behind the unprecedented cemetery project, look over Lincoln's shoulder as he rethinks and rewrites his speech on the very morning of the ceremony, and share his anxiety that he might not live up to the occasion. And then, at last, we stand with Lincoln at Gettysburg, when he created the words and image of an enduring and authentic legend. Writing the Gettysburg Address resolves the puzzles and problems that have shrouded the composition of Lincoln's most admired speech in mystery for fifteen decades. Johnson shows when Lincoln first started his speech, reveals the state of the document Lincoln brought to Gettysburg, traces the origin of the false story that Lincoln wrote his speech on the train, identifies the manuscript Lincoln held while speaking, and presents a new method for deciding what Lincoln’s audience actually heard him say. Ultimately, Johnson shows that the Gettysburg Address was a speech that grew and changed with each step of Lincoln's eventful journey to the podium. His two-minute speech made the battlefield and the cemetery into landmarks of the American imagination, but it was Lincoln’s own journey to Gettysburg that made the Gettysburg Address.

They had not become so used then to scenes of blood, and little knew of the terrible malignity of those passions which had been set on fire of hell. To fight a duel, they said, was chivalrous and like the New World, but to strike with the dagger or the bullet by stealth was like the Old World dastardly, cowardly, mean, felonious. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on the Life and Public Services of Abraham Lincoln, Late President of the United States: Delivered by Public Request, in Christ M. E. Church, Pittsburgh, Thursday, June 1, 1865 Yes! Abraham lincoln is no more. All that could die of him who has defended and rebuilt the tottering structure of our fathers, has passed from earthly view, by a transition as abrupt as his who laid the foundations of the Eternal City, and then, according to the legendary epic of the Roman State, was wrapt from mortal vision in a chariot of fire. The Shadow of the destroyer has mounted behind the trooper, and the grim Spectre of the grisly king followed close upon the pageant of the avenue. The Wise and prudent ruler who was commissioned of God to lead this people through the fiery trials from which they have just emerged - the chief who had just been lifted on their bucklers for a second time to the supreme com mand - the idol of the popular heart, Who had so recently been crowned anew at the Capitol With the symbols of a nation's power, the insignia of a nation's trust, and the rewards of a nation's gratitude, amidst the thundering salvos of artillery, and the re sponsive voices of an innumerable throng, has ceased to listen to the applauding Shout, and passed from the regards of men, into the serener light of an abode beyond the stars, Where the banner of war is furled, and the hoarse summons of the trumpet, and the roll of the stirring drum, no longer awaken either to the battle or the triumph. On two occasions only in our brief but eventful history, the hand of death has fallen upon the head of this great Republic. On both, however, it descended in a period of public tranquility, bythe quiet and gentle ministration of nature, without shock and without disturbance. The fruit fell when it was ripe, and the nation grieved, but not as those who are without hope. It paused but for a moment to cast its tribute of affection on the tomb, and then hurried onward in its high and prosperous career. For the first time now, in the very hurricane of civil strife, a bloody tragedy, of fearful aspect, and more than mediaeval horror, forestalling the dis solving processes that are interwoven with the law of life, has snatched away the man who, above all others, was most dear to us, almost in the twinkling of an eye, in high health, and in the very crisis of his great work, when the regards of the world were most intently fixed upon him, and the destinies of a nation were trembling in his hands. It is as though an apparition had stalked, in the midst of our rejoicings, into the very presence of the festal board, and it is under the projecting shadow with which that ghastly shape has darkened the whole land as with a general eclipse, that I am asked to discourse to you of the merits and services of the extraordinary man, who has thus disappeared from amongst us after having enacted so large a part in the greatest and most im portant era of the world's history. It is a task which is never easy in the performance, and cannot be faithfully executed until the lapse of years shall withdraw the observer from a proximity that is always unfavorable to the clearest vision, and the work is consigned to the pen of impartial history. It is one, however, which I have not felt at liberty to decline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com
Download or read book Lincoln at Gettysburg written by Garry Wills and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of words has rarely been given a more compelling demonstration than in the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was asked to memorialize the gruesome battle. Instead, he gave the whole nation "a new birth of freedom" in the space of a mere 272 words. His entire life and previous training, and his deep political experience went into this, his revolutionary masterpiece. By examining both the address and Lincoln in their historical moment and cultural frame, Wills breathes new life into words we thought we knew, and reveals much about a president so mythologized but often misunderstood. Wills shows how Lincoln came to change the world and to effect an intellectual revolution, how his words had to and did complete the work of the guns, and how Lincoln wove a spell that has not yet been broken.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln, Delivered at Rockland, Maine, April 19, 1865, by Request of the Citizens On this 19th of April, 1865, Abraham Lincoln, the first President of these United States whose name and administra tion will be forever associated with Universal Emancipation, struck down by the assassin's hand, is carried to his burial at Washington; and a nation is in tears. The martyrs of Lexington and Baltimore died under the lurid skies of the morning, betokening a day of dark and doubt ful conflict. Abraham Lincoln died at eventide, when the sun, breaking through the scattering clouds, tinged them with gold and purple, giving promise for the morrow, and threw across the yet darkened sky the bow of h0pe, - harbinger of peace. But the victor may die, and the victory not be lost. The seed ripens for the harvest, though the hand of the sower be cold in death. More than two centuries ago, Gustavus Adolphus, the most illustrious hero of his time, died, in the hour of victory, on the blood-stained field of Lutzen. But we, to-day, enjoying civil and religious freedom, are reaping the fruits of that vic tory over papal despotism and imperial tyranny. More than a century back, the gallant Wolfe died, in the hour of triumph, on the Plains of Abraham; but the victory was not lost. The papal and French power on this continent was forever broken, and the way was prepared for the Ameri can Revolution and the birth of this glorious Republic. Nelson, too, died at Trafalgar, in the hour of his most splen did victory but that did not restore the shattered navy of France. Napoleon, almost omnipotent on the land, was power less on the ocean. England was mistress of the seas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
