Book excerpt: EUCAMBIS was established under BIOMED I in 1994 as an interdisciplinary consortium aiming to advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of ageing of immunosenescence. The project sought to draw together scientists and clinicians from diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology, cell and tumour biology, geriatrics, endocrinology and transplantation biology in order to investigate the impact of ageing on immune responses. The papers collected in this volume illustrate the diversity of the work carried out by the members of EUCAMBIS during its three-and-a-half year existence. This introductory chapter attempts to summarize the results of some of the EUCAMBIS collaborations, with emphasis on the "workshop" approach which was aimed at analysing the expression of "growth arrest" genes in ageing human T lymphocytes.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lechoslaw Turski
  • Publisher : IOS Press
  • Release : 2001
  • ISBN : 9781586030728
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Excitatory Amino Acids written by Lechoslaw Turski and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This past decade has led to many significant advances in the understanding of the function of excitatory amino acids in synaptic transmission. The cloning of the ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptor families of receptor proteins has produced new strategies for the pharmacological modulation of glutamate transmission. The engineering of transgenic animals with modified expression of receptor proteins has created new insights into the function, dysfunction and possible pathology causally related to glutamate receptors. Advances in the pharmacology of glutamate receptors has led to clinical research addressing multiple therapeutic applications of drugs that act on excitatory amino acid systems. A number of NMDA receptor anatagonists have now been studied in humans. AMPA/kainate and metabotropic receptor active compounds have left the preclinical realms of research and have moved towards or are in the clinic.

Clefts of the lip and/or palate are birth defects affecting 1:500 live births. Successful rehabilitation requires a complex multidisciplinary mix of services.

Book Quality of Orthodontic Care

Download or read book Quality of Orthodontic Care written by Bastiaan J. Njio and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the EURO-QUAL programme has been to improve the quality of care for the individual patient. At the same time the need for harmonisation of health care in Europe was recognised. This Quality Improvement System (QIS) for orthodontic care in Europe comprises of 'Guidelines for how to implement a QIS' and reference material from the project teams: Financial Resources, Professional Development, Consumer Satisfaction, and Industrial Co-operation. In this respect the following topics are discussed: * The differences and similarities in local (national) quality initiatives. * The use of databases, as a technique to improve quality by comparing one's own performance against that of colleagues. * The influence of the different national systems of funding on both the amount of care provided as well as the quality of care. * The contents and the quality of the educational programmes, at all levels of orthodontic care. * Promotion of patients' rights and responsibilities before, during and after the orthodontic treatment. * A common goal and common language with the industrial partners by which the interaction can be optimised and communication will be enriched. This book provides the background information for the appropriate use of the European Orthodontic Quality Manual (EOQM). Strategies for the implementation of a QIS in orthodontics, taking into account the complex of the outlined aspects, make this book interesting for the orthodontic professional as well as the stakeholders (education, funding, industry, and consumers) in orthodontic care.

Download or read book Aging Methods and Protocols written by Yvonne A. Barnett and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging is an almost universal process within biological systems, one which leads to a decline in functional capacity, disease onset, and eventually death. There has been much interest in recent years to elucidate the molecular mec- nisms that underlie the aging process. Many theories have been proposed since the last century that aim to explain the causes of aging. There is no one theory that completely satisfies the phenotype of aging, but genetics and environm- tal factors play an important role in the etiology of age-related pathologies and the aging process. However, there is still much to be learned about the aging process which has been termed one of the last great frontiers in biology. De- graphic changes worldwide are leading to increased average life expectancies within our populations. These changes in population characteristics will impact upon the economies of the supporting society, with increasing healthcare and infrastructural costs arising from the prevalence of age-related pathologies and other physical disabilities associated with advancing years. Many researchers worldwide are working in the attempt to identify key cellular processes through which it might one day be possible to slow down the aging process and thus increase the health span of humans. Numerous research projects—from the cellular through to tissue, organ, and whole organism studies—are currently underway to investigate the mul- factorial aging process.

Book Basic Biology and Clinical Impact of Immunosenescence

Download or read book Basic Biology and Clinical Impact of Immunosenescence written by G. Pawelec and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ageing is of perennial interest as a universal feature in all human societies. The genetic background and biochemical bases of ageing processes are currently being revealed in unprecedented detail. It is emerging that one of the main hurdles to be overcome in achieving a long and healthy lifespan is the maintenance of a properly functioning immune system. The main cause of death in people who have achieved "successful ageing" (which mostly means not having succumbed to cancer or cardiovascular disease) is infectious disease, caused by immunosenescence. This book contains chapters by many of the leaders in the field of immune-related issues in ageing and remediation.

Book EUROHIS

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. Nosikov
  • Publisher : IOS Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781586033224
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book EUROHIS written by A. Nosikov and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EUROHIS project has focused on the comparability of health surveys and has uncovered some problems that arise when aiming to compare data from different countries. Similar problems of cross-cultural comparability also arise when comparing data from other sources, such as health registers, and are just as complex and difficult to tackle. One of the main advantages of health surveys, however, is the relatively low cost and time involved in adapting them according to the needs of health policy-makers. This work shows that the output from the EUROHIS project provides common instruments for the measurement of eight health indicators. The development of these instruments has required careful consideration of relevant common concepts and how these should be defined and operationalized. The instruments are freely available for use by all countries, with the aim of enhancing national health information systems and facilitating cross-national comparisons of health data.

Book Moderately Proteinuric IgA Nephropathy in the Young

Download or read book Moderately Proteinuric IgA Nephropathy in the Young written by Rosanna Coppo and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is one of the most common glomerular diseases world-wide. Its natural history is consistent with a clinical onset in the first decades of life. Clinical indicators of poor prognosis are proteinuria and hypertension. Angiotensin-converting enzyme-inhibitors (ACE-I) are a promising treatment, since angiotensin II playes a key role in glomerular hypertension and permselectivity and modulates mesangial and tubular cell functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glial cells are commonly viewed as subordinate players to the functional requirements of neighbouring neurons - in normal as well as pathological conditions. These neuron-glial interactions are crucial for the development, maintenance, plasticity and repair of the nervous system. They are also dependent upon and/or influenced by interactions between glial cells themselves.

Book Family Care of Older People in Europe

Download or read book Family Care of Older People in Europe written by Ian Philp and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing appropriate responses to an ageing population is recognized by policy makers throughout the developed world as a top priority, as is the vital contribution made by family caregivers. However, cultural, demographic and organizational differences between countries have encouraged diverse patterns of response to this common challenge. This book provides a systematic cross-cultural analysis of contemporary patterns and future trends in all major countries of the European Union. Additional interest is provided by including Poland emerging from the post- Communist block as the country at the forefront for joining the European Union. The book should be useful to European policy makers and academies involved in studying the health and social care needs of older people and the capacity, contribution and needs of family caregivers who provide care to older people. The book is also relevant for policy makers and researchers in other countries, mostly in North America and Australia who wish to study European approaches to supporting older people and family caregivers.
