Book The Origin of the Indo Iranians

Download or read book The Origin of the Indo Iranians written by Elena Efimovna Kuzʹmina and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007 with total page 782 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here then is the fruit of Elena Kuz'mina's life-long quest for the Indo-Iranians. Already its predecessor ("Otkuda prishli indoarii?," published in 1994) was considered the most comprehensive analysis of the origins of the Indo-Iranians ever published, but in this new, significantly expanded edition (edited by J.P. Mallory) we find an encyclopaedic account of the Andronovo culture of Eurasia. Taking its evidence from archaeology, linguistics, ethnology, mythology, and physical anthropology pertaining to Indo-Iranian origins and expansions, it comprehensively covers the relationships of this culture with neighboring areas and cultures, and its role in the foundation of the Indo-Iranian peoples.

Book An Etymological Dictionary of Persian English and Other Indo European Languages

Download or read book An Etymological Dictionary of Persian English and Other Indo European Languages written by Nourai and published by . This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Words are the elements of a language that also serve as a mirror reflecting the cultural history and development of a people. Tracing words to their origins will open a unique window to human civilization and help us understand the roots of some of our present social trends and attitudes. The primary motivation for writing this book is the hope that it may foster a greater appreciation of the variances among different languages and cultures, and ultimately nurture a greater understanding among those who speak apparently different languages. The words and their documented derivations in this dictionary are displayed in "family tree" charts to make it easier to see the ties between cognate words like siblings and cousins in the same family.

Book Persian Etymology with Indo European Cognates

Download or read book Persian Etymology with Indo European Cognates written by Ali Nourai and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Etymological dictionary presents the complex derivation of words in simple family tree charts. They help us see the derivation of words at a glance and follow their spread in different languages. The charts also show the earlier or original meanings of words that could help us understand the roots of some of our present social trends and attitudes. The words for father in Indo-European languages, for example, come from roots meaning "protector of the family". Some other roots tell us that the role of mothers was to feed, brothers had to carry the family load, and daughters were expected to milk their farm animals. The charts in this dictionary show derivation of over 9400 Persian and other Iranian words along with their 5800 cognates in Indo-European languages. Due to the exchange of words with other languages, more than 1400 cognates in Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish and other languages are also included in these charts.

Book An Etymological Dictionary of Persian English and Other Indo European Languages Vol 2

Download or read book An Etymological Dictionary of Persian English and Other Indo European Languages Vol 2 written by Ali Nourai and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing words to their origins opens a new window to human civilization and culture and helps us understand the roots of some of our present social trends and attitudes. For example, the etymology of words for family members clearly shows the division of responsibilities in the most basic unit of society - the family. Father was the "protector" of the family (Pa: protect), mother was the "feeder"(Ma: breast), brother was the load "carrier" (Bher: carry) and daughter was the "milker" (Dhugh: to milk). If one makes the effort to read beyond the shallow shell of sounds and symbols, one can recognize our human oneness portrayed in our words and their historical roots. The primary motivation for writing this dictionary is the hope that it would foster a greater appreciation for the commonality in the apparent variance among different languages and cultures, and ultimately nurture a greater understanding among those who speak apparently different languages. In tracing any Persian word to its origins, its cognates in other Indo-European languages must be considered. In this dictionary, English cognates are regularly referred to along with some other Indo-European equivalents. Altogether, over 1,600 roots and 17,400 derived words are presented in this dictionary. One of the most unique features of this dictionary is its graphical presentation of etymological data, similar to a family tree. The derivations of words are indicated with arrows rather than lengthy text. The arrows greatly simplify the process of tracing words to their roots.

Book An Introduction to the Indo European Languages

Download or read book An Introduction to the Indo European Languages written by Philip Baldi and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive linguistic survey of the Indo-European groups synthesizes the vast amount of information contained in the specialized handbooks of the individual stocks. The text begins with an introduction to the concept of the Indo-European language family, the history of its discovery, and the techniques of analysis. The introduction also gives a structural sketch of Proto-Indo-European, the parent language from which the others are descended. Baldi then devotes a chapter to each of the 11 major branches of Indo-European (Italic, Celtic, Indo-Iranian, Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Baltic, Slavic, Germanic, Tocharian, and Anatolian). Each chapter provides an outline of the external history of the branch, its people, dialects, and other relevant history. This outline is followed by a structural sketch of the most important language or languages of the branch (e.g., Old Irish for Celtic, Sanskrit and Avestan for Indo-Iranian, Latin and Osco-Umbrian for Italic). The sketch also contains the phonology, morphology, and syntax of each language. There is lastly a sample text of each language containing both interlinear and free translation. In those branches where there are special issues (e.g., the relation of Italic to Celtic and Baltic to Slavic, or the problem of archaism in Hittite), additional discussions of these issues are provided. Baldi's final chapter gives a brief outline of the "minor" Indo-European languages such as Illyrian, Thracian, Raetic, and Phrygian. Adding further to the usefulness of the book are extensive bibliographies, an up-to-date map showing the geographical distribution of the Indo-European languages throughout the world, and a detailed family tree diagram of the members of each subgroup within the Indo-European language family and their interrelationships.
