These alloys of chemical compositions Pd0,97Ce0,03, Pd0,97Zr0,03 and Pd0,97Zr0,015Ce0,015 were produced in an electric-arc furnace and then cold worked (rolling). Different thermal treatments were applied to several samples in order to induce internal oxidation which induces formation of precipitates of Cerium and Zirconium oxides. Characterization and structural properties of the precipitates were conducted using SEM and TEM techniques. Hydrogen permeation tests were also undertaken in the alloys in order to describe the influence of the microstructure on the diffusivity, the solubility and also the formation of hydride. Samples internally oxidized at 1073 K during 24 h show smaller values of hydrogen diffusivity (0,3 x 10-11m2s-1 for the Pd0,97Zr0,03 alloy) and higher values of hydrogen solubility (5672 molHm-3 for the Pd0,97Zr0,015Ce0,015 alloy) than other samples treated using different conditions. This is due to the presence of nanometric precipitates of CeO2 and ZrO2 induced by the internal oxidation. Theses precipitates are cristallographically coherent with palladium matrix and induce strong distortion in the matrix and thus effectively interact with the hydrogen. When precipitates increases, interaction with hydrogen is getting smaller, increasing values of diffusivity and reducing values of solubility of hydrogen in alloys. In relation with hydride formation, samples without internal oxidation show more difficulties to form hydride than internally oxidized ones. This is due to the presence of atoms in the solid solution and to the high density of dislocation and vacancies which don't let to the possibility to form hydrides to the palladium matrix.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities.
