L'interaction entre le rayonnement d'un laser Nd-YAG et des matériaux transparents à 1,064 μm, comme l'alumine ou une fritte de verre, est étudiée, en particulier l'absorption et la réflexion du rayonnement par la poudre. Un élément absorbant vers 1μm, tel le fer, est ajouté, par dopage du verre et par mélange ou enrobage de l'alumine. Deux approches complémentaires sont menées : l'une expérimentale, sur poudres avec un spectromètre muni d'une sphère d'intégration et sur matériaux homogènes de même composition, dans le cas des verres, afin d'obtenir leurs indices de réfraction n et d'extinction κ; l'autre numérique, grâce à une simulation par la méthode de Monte-Carlo et un modèle à n flux, qui permet d'étudier l'influence de divers paramètres et de calculer l'énergie absorbée dans chaque grain. Book excerpt: Ce travail présente une étude originale de l'interaction laser-matière en régime nanoseconde à l'aide d'une double approche expériences-modélisation numérique. L'approche expérimentale vise à caractériser les plasmas produits par laser et l'empreinte laissée par le faisceau laser sur la cible. L'approche numérique s'appuie sur un modèle 1D qui permet de décrire le chauffage de la cible par le laser, l'ablation de matière et la formation d'un plasma dans cette matière ablatée dûe à l'interaction avec le laser. Des comparaisons des résultats obtenus par les deux approches permettent d'évaluer le degré de précision des résultats issus du modèle. Ces comparaisons se limitent aux 100 premières nanosecondes d'expansion du plasma. Nous montrons ainsi que le modèle décrit assez bien l'écrantage du faisceau laser par le plasma, l'expansion du plasma et la propagation de l'onde de choc dans le gaz ambiant. De plus, les valeurs des seuils d'ablation et de formation du plasma sont calculées avec une bonne précision. En revanche, des écarts sont constatés pour la modélisation des processus d'interaction entre le laser et la cible. Le degré de précision du modèle est au final suffisamment bon pour nous permettre d'étudier précisément l'effet du gaz ambiant sur les propriétés et la dynamique du plasma.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed.
