L'endommagement en surface est étudié à l'aide de la Microscopie à Force Atomique (AFM). Pour des pertes d'énergie électronique supérieure à 16.0 keV/nm, des bosses apparaissent en surface. La hauteur de ces bosses diminue quand l'épaisseur de la couche d'oxyde augmente. Les études de Spectroscopie Infrarouge montrent que le seuil d'endommagement pour le a-SiO2 est autour de 2.0 keV/nm. Alors, il est probable que la formation de ces bosses en surface ait son origine dans le substrat de Si. Le modèle de la pointe thermique conforte l'hypothèse que la création des bosses est liée à la réponse du Si. Ce modèle indique un seuil d'endommagement de 1.8 keV/nm (a-SiO2) et 8.0 keV/nm (Si). L'attaque chimique après irradiation offre une possibilité technique de réaliser des trous nanométriques avec des dimensions et formes contrôlables. Il est aussi possible de déterminer le rayon de la pointe AFM.

Book excerpt: Certains minéraux de la famille des apatites sont pressentis pour être utilisés comme matrices de conditionnement ou d'incinération dans l'optique d'un traitement futur des déchets nucléaires de haute activité. L'étude de réacteurs naturels fossiles a permis de mettre en lumière la forte capacité de ces minéraux à autoguérir les dégâts d'irradiation. Afin de définir un comportement type pour ces matériaux, nous avons mené une étude fondamentale sur l'évolution de l'endommagement après irradiation par ions lourds dans deux apatites : une fluoroapatite phosphocalcique naturelle (Durango) et une fluoroapatite monosilicatée synthétique (britholite). Cet endommagement a été mesuré respectivement par spectrométrie RBS canalisée et par diffraction X en déterminant un rayon efficace d'amorphisation Re. Les résultats révèlent un comportement proche pour les deux apatites en fonction du dépôt d'énergie électronique à l'entrée du matériau. Par ailleurs, l'effet d'un recuit isotherme à 300ʻC a été quantifié sur une britholite irradiée avec des ions Kr. Nous avons ainsi mis en évidence un retour des paramètres de maille à leurs valeurs initiales, suivi d'une restructuration lente du réseau cristallin en fonction du temps de recuit. Enfin, nous avons suivi l'évolution de la morphologie des figures de dissolution en milieu acide dans la fluoroapatite de Durango en fonction du dépôt d'énergie induit par les ions. Celle-ci révèle que l'influence de la cristallographie mène rapidement à des angles d'ouverture proches de 30ʻ. Le calcul des vitesses d'attaque chimique met en évidence une gamme de dépôt d'énergie où le rapport des vitesses augmente fortement avant de devenir constant.
