Download or read book A Strange Business written by James Hamilton and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain in the nineteenth century saw a series of technological and social changes which continue to influence and direct us today. Its reactants were human genius, money and influence, its crucibles the streets and institutions, its catalyst time, its control the market. In this rich and fascinating book, James Hamilton investigates the vibrant exchange between culture and business in nineteenth-century Britain, which became a center for world commerce following the industrial revolution. He explores how art was made and paid for, the turns of fashion, and the new demands of a growing middle-class, prominent among whom were the artists themselves. While leading figures such as Turner, Constable, Landseer, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Dickens are players here, so too are the patrons, financiers, collectors and industrialists; publishers, entrepreneurs, and journalists; artists' suppliers, engravers, dealers and curators; hostesses, shopkeepers and brothel keepers; quacks, charlatans, and auctioneers. Hamilton brings them all vividly to life in this kaleidoscopic portrait of the business of culture in nineteenth-century Britain, and provides thrilling and original insights into the working lives of some of the era's most celebrated artists.

Book Pleasure Wars The Bourgeois Experience Victoria to Freud

Download or read book Pleasure Wars The Bourgeois Experience Victoria to Freud written by Peter Gay and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 1998-01-17 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A master historian shows us a new side of the Victorian Era--the role of the Bourgeois as reactionaries, revolutionaries, and middle-of-the-roaders in the passage of high culture toward modernism. The Victorians in this richly peopled narrative maneuvered through decades marked by frequent shifts in taste, some seeking safety in traditional styles, others drawn to the avant-garde of artists, composers, and writers. Peter Gay's panoramic survey offers a fresh view of the ideas and sensibilities that dominated Victorian culture.

Book Visions of Queer Martyrdom from John Henry Newman to Derek Jarman

Download or read book Visions of Queer Martyrdom from John Henry Newman to Derek Jarman written by Dominic Janes and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominic Janes is at pains here to highlight the role played by Christianity in the history of homosexuality in Britain. His story deals not merely with genital relations but also with identities both embraced and refused. Necessarily, coded expressions of desire as well as creative blurrings between religious idealism and queer gender and sexuality are integral to Janes s account. A special focus for Janes is the way in which visual images and imaginary visions of suffering in ecclesiastical contexts were used to develop concepts of male same-sex desire that projected the self as dutiful and penitent rather than shameful. And so, a model (and in ways a substitute) for same-sex relationships was readily available in idealizations of the person and body of Christas unmarried queer martyr. Homosexual desires and identities prove to have unfolded in creative dialogue with religion during and since the 19th century. Various figures enter into Janes s history, from Cardinal Newman and Oscar Wilde to artists such as Simeon Solomon and Frederick Rolfe, and the plot thickens with forays into Victorian monasteries that functioned as queer families, with fascinating side trips into Rolfe s Christmas cards as expressions of queer aesthetic/identity. He brings the account full circle with a concluding chapter on the life and works of Derek Jarman. Janes uses this case to show that the experience of the AIDS epidemic led to a reconnection with older modes of queer self-expression specifically concerned with the endurance of suffering. The religious roots of queer creativity are a vital resource for modern churches and openly gay men and women to learn from."
