  • Author : Lucy Shipley
  • Publisher : Reaktion Books
  • Release : 2023-09-24

Download or read book The Etruscans written by Lucy Shipley and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2023-09-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, a brief introduction to the mysteries of the enigmatic, ancient civilization in the area of modern Italy. The Etruscans were a powerful people, marked by an influential civilization in ancient Italy. But despite their prominence, the Etruscans are often portrayed as mysterious—a strange and unknowable people whose language and culture have largely vanished. Lucy Shipley’s The Etruscans presents a different picture. Shipley writes of a people who traded with Greece and shaped the development of Rome, who inspired Renaissance artists and Romantic firebrands, and whose influence is still felt strongly in the modern world. Covering colonialism and conquest, misogyny and mystique, she weaves Etruscan history with new archaeological evidence to give us a revived picture of the Etruscan people. The book traces trade routes and trains of thought, describing the journey of Etruscan objects from creation to use, loss, rediscovery, and reinvention. From the wrappings of an Egyptian mummy displayed in a fashionable salon to the extra-curricular activities of Bonaparte, from a mass looting craze to a bombed museum in a town marked by massacre, the book is an extraordinary voyage through Etruscan archaeology, which ultimately leads to surprising and intriguing places. In this sharp and groundbreaking book, Shipley gives readers a unique perspective on an enigmatic people, revealing just how much we know about the Etruscans—and just how much still remains undiscovered.

Book The Liber Linteus

Download or read book The Liber Linteus written by Fred Woudhuizen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this book, dealing with the Zagreb 'Liber Linteus' (formerly known as Agramer Mumienbinde), the longest extant Etruscan text, the author further strengthens his case that Etruscan is basically a colonial dialect influence from Greek, Latin and the other Italic idioms mainly in its vocabulary. The text of the 'Liber Linteus' is shown to be liturgical in character, several of the divinities featuring in it and much of the cult vocabulary being paralleled in the context of the Anatolian Indo-European languages. "Finally, there can be no doubt that Etruscan just like Luwian hieroglyphic, is an Indo-European language of the "entum"--Type" (p.161). The book provides full translation and commentary of the text, in addition grammatical and etymological indexes and a complete word index."

Book Studies in the languages and language contact in Pre Hellenistic Anatolia

Download or read book Studies in the languages and language contact in Pre Hellenistic Anatolia written by Federico Giusfredi and published by Edicions Universitat Barcelona. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on contacts between Anatolian languages within and outside Anatolia. The selected essays, written by members of ongoing research projects on Anatolian languages, present case studies from both the first and second millennia. These include etymological and morphophonological investigations within the framework of Graeco-Anatolian contacts, as well as a critical essay on the possible Anatolian-Etruscan contacts. Alongside strictly linguistic analysis, the essays cover different aspects of cultural contacts (the origin of the word for ‘salt’ in Luwian), toponyms (in Lycia), and religion (the god called King of Kaunos), and are introduced with a detailed overview of the origins of the Anatolian linguistic landscape.

Book Economy of Religions in Anatolia and Northern Syria

Download or read book Economy of Religions in Anatolia and Northern Syria written by Manfred Hutter and published by Ugarit-Verlag. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Religions" are always costly - one has to give offerings (with material value) to the gods, one has to provide the salary for religious specialists who offer their service for their clients, one has to arrange festivals and liturgies - and of course, one has to provide the material means for building temples or shrines. But these costs also repay - as the gods give health or well-being as reward for the offerings. Even if one can never be absolutely certain about such a reward, one at least might earn social reputation because of one's (financial) involvement in religion. But temples are also economic centres - "employing" (often in close relation to the palace) people as workers, craftsmen or "intellectuals" in different positions whose "costs of living" are supplied by the temple. Individual religious specialists receive payment for their service to cover their own costs of living. Although this might sound "modern", religion and economy were intertwined with each other in ancient society also. For this reason, the papers of this conference volume analyse and discuss how the cults, rituals and institutions in Anatolia in the 2nd and 1st millennium contribute to the economic process in those areas.
