This book was released on 2023-02-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The growth of serious interest during the last fifty years in the scholastic contribution to the development of economic thought has been very marked, and no-where more so than in the history of economic thought in Spain. First published in 1978, this book begins in the Middle Ages and traces the effect on business practice and on thought of the presence of the Christian, Islamic and Jewish communities who lived side by side in the Peninsula. It shows how the economics of Plato and Aristotle were transmitted by way of Toledo to the Latin West. In the second half of the book the author considers e~Salamancane(tm) ideas and the views of the political economists and e~projectorse(tm) who preceded the Enlightenment. At the same time she surveys the present state of the subject and offers bibliographical guidance for the reader.

Book Modalities in Medieval Philosophy

Download or read book Modalities in Medieval Philosophy written by Simo Knuuttila and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Modalities in Medieval Philosophy looks at the idea of modality as multiplicity of reference with respect to alternative domains. The book examines how this emerged in early medieval discussions and addresses how it was originally influenced by the theological conception of God acting by choice. After a discussion of ancient modal paradigms, the author traces the interplay of old and new modal views in medieval logic and semantics, philosophy and theology. A detailed account is given of late medieval discussions of the new modal logic, epistemic logic, and the logic norms. These theories show striking similarities to some basic tenets of contemporary approaches to modal matters. This work will be of considerable interest to historians of philosophy and ideas and philosophers of logic and metaphysics.

Book Psychiatry and Neuroscience Update

Download or read book Psychiatry and Neuroscience Update written by Pascual Ángel Gargiulo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This broad and thought-provoking volume provides an overview of recent intellectual and scientific advances that bridge the gap between psychiatry and neuroscience, offering a wide range of penetrating insights in both disciplines. The third volume on the topic in the last several years from a varying panel of international experts, this title identifies the borders, trends and implications in both fields today and goes beyond that into related disciplines to seek out connections and influences. Similar to its two Update book predecessors, Psychiatry and Neuroscience – Volume III presents the current state-of-the-art in the main disciplines – psychiatry and neuroscience – and attempts to provide deeper comprehension or explication of the normal and diseased human mind, its biological correlates and its biographical and existential implications. This engaging volume continues the previous style of exploring different disciplines and trying to integrate disciplinary evidence from varying points of view in an organic manner. Developed for clinicians and researchers in the fields of medicine, psychiatry, psychology and biology, this third volume also will be of great interest to students and university professors of diverse disciplines.

Book De Fato Latin

  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 0856684767
  • Pages : 255 pages

Download or read book De Fato Latin written by Marcus Tullius Cicero and published by Aris and Phillips Classical Te. This book was released on 1991 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero and Boethius did more than anyone else to transmit the insights of Greek philosophy to the Latin culture of Western Europe which has played so influential a part in our civilisation to this day. Cicero's treatise On Fate, though surviving only in a fragmentary and mutilated state, records contributions to the discussion of a central philosophical issue, that of free will and determinism, which are comparable in importance to those of twentieth-century philosophers and indeed sometimes anticipate them. Study of the treatise has been hindered by the lack of a combined Latin text and English translation based on a clear understanding of the arguments; Dr Sharples' text is intended to meet this need. The last book of Boethius' Consolation is linked with Cicero's treatise by its theme, the relation of divine foreknowledge to human freedom. Text with translation and commentary. (Aris and Phillips 1992)

Book A History of Western Astrology

Download or read book A History of Western Astrology written by S. J. Tester and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1987 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superb general account.' Times Literary Supplement The story of the history of Western astrology begins with the philosophers of Greece in the 5th century BC. To the magic and stargazing of Egypt the Greeks added numerology, geometryand rational thought. The philosophy of Plato and later of the Stoics made astrology respectable, and by the time Ptolemy wrote his textbook the Tetrabiblos, in the second century AD, the main lines of astrological practice as it is known today had already been laid down. In future centuries astrology shifted to Islam only to return to the West in medieval times where it flourished until the shift of ideas during the Renaissance.
