Book Ethylbenzene exposure in North America an update

Download or read book Ethylbenzene exposure in North America an update written by Janet E. Kester and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronic ethylbenzene exposures and attendant potential health risks for United States children and prospective parents were first evaluated under the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Voluntary Children’s Chemical Evaluation Program. Using updated data and methods, a 2015 reevaluation observed declines in ethylbenzene releases and concentrations in ambient and indoor air. Both assessments identified inhalation as the dominant exposure route and smoking as the greatest contributor, with dietary intake much lower. Children’s exposure concentrations were similar to that of adults, but their intakes were higher. Neither breastfeeding nor toy mouthing was a significant source. This report updates the previous assessments, summarizing current ethylbenzene concentrations in air and foods, exposures during the use of household and consumer products, nationally representative biomonitoring data, including expanded demographic groups, and a new survey of worker exposures in styrene production facilities. General population ethylbenzene exposures appear to have declined for all age groups. The ethylbenzene/styrene chain of commerce contributes an estimated 0.1% to total air emissions and 7%-12% to dietary concentrations. Total estimated ethylbenzene intakes are consistent with biomonitoring data. Lactational transfer is not a significant exposure pathway for breastfed infants. Production workers’ exposure is well below occupational guidelines. Updated exposure estimates for each pathway suitable for potential health risk assessment are proposed.

Book Catalysis for a Sustainable Environment

Download or read book Catalysis for a Sustainable Environment written by Armando J. L. Pombeiro and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-02 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary approach to sustainability, illustrating current catalytic approaches in applied chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science Catalysis for a Sustainable Environment covers the use of catalysis in its various approaches, including homogeneous, supported, and heterogeneous catalysis, and photo- and electrocatalysis, towards sustainable environmental benefits. The text fosters interdisciplinarity in sustainability by illustrating modern perspectives in catalysis, from fields including inorganic, organic, organometallic, bioinorganic, pharmacological, and analytical chemistry, along with chemical engineering and materials science. The chapters are grouped in seven sections on (i) Carbon Dioxide Utilization, (ii) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Transformation, (iii) Carbon-based Catalysis, (iv) Coordination, Inorganic, and Bioinspired Catalysis, (v) Organocatalysis, (vi) Catalysis for Water and Liquid Fuels Purification, and (vii) Hydrogen Formation/Storage. Sample topics covered in Catalysis for a Sustainable Environment include: Activation of relevant small molecules with strong environmental impact and carbon-based catalysts for sustainable chemical processes Catalytic synthesis of important added value organic compounds, in both commodity and fine chemistries (large and small scale productions, respectively) Development of catalytic systems operating under environmentally benign and mild conditions towards the establishment of sustainable energy processes Catalysis by coordination, metal and metal-free compounds, MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) and nanoparticles, and their contribution to environmental and sustainable processes Employing the latest approaches that impact global and circular economies, Catalysis for a Sustainable Environment serves as an excellent starting point for innovative catalytic approaches, and will appeal to professionals in engineering, academia, and industry who wish to improve existing processes and materials.
