Book excerpt: Tokelau: A Historical Ethnography is the outcome of more than two decades of intensive and wide-ranging research in and about the three tiny Polynesian atolls known as Tokelau. The book is both a comparative ethnographic study of the islands of Tokelau and a narrative record of their past. The ethnographic study is set in the years around 1970, and local narratives and records complement foreign documents to tell the separate and combined stories of the atolls traditional, contact, and colonial pasts. Throughout, the differences and interrelationships between the three places are highlighted.

Book Oceanic Socialities and Cultural Forms

Download or read book Oceanic Socialities and Cultural Forms written by Ingjerd Hoëm and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2003-02-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In anthropology, theoretical approaches attempting to come to terms with experiences of social interaction, often inspired by phenomenology, have come to the fore in opposition to the previously favored emphasis on symbolic and social structures. These essays attempt a new kind of ethnographic description of social life that treats structure and practice as aspects of the same reality. This is achieved through attention to indigenous conceptualizations of the way society itself is generated. With Jonathan Friedman and Fredrik Barth providing overviews, this series of innovative ethnographies highlights ways of forming social relations specific to Oceania as a cultural area, exemplifying a new kind of comparative approach and making a major contribution to general social theory.

Book Tokelau Oral Literature

  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Tokelau Oral Literature written by Ingjerd Hoëm and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kupa mai te Tutolu or "Words from Tokelau" is a collection of oral texts covering a wide range of genres from the most formal to the informal. All the texts are presented in Tokelauan, a Polynesian language spoken by about 1600 people on the three Tokelau islands and by about 3000 Tokelauans living in New Zealand, and are accompanied by English translations and extensive notes. Great care has been taken to ensure that the particular characteristics of the oral performances have not been lost. The book combines a traditional philological analysis with empirically oriented, modern linguistic, and anthropological approaches. The combination of in-depth textual studies and a sensitivity to features of performance and context makes this study an original contribution to the field of Polynesian studies.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Discovery and Exploration of the Pacific Islands written by Max Quanchi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2005-10-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Seas, as this region used to be called, conjured up images of adventure, belles and savages, romance and fabulous fortunes, but the long voyages of discovery and exploration of the vast Pacific Ocean were really an exercise in amazing logistics, navigation, hard grit, shipwreck and pure luck. The motivations were scientific and geographic, but at the same time nationalistic and materialistic. A series on global exploration and discovery would not be complete without this book by Quanchi and Robson. It is ambitious and informative and includes the familiar names of Laperouse, Bougainville, Cook and Dampier, as well as the intriguing stories of the Bounty Mutiny, scurvy, and the mysterious Northwest Passage, Terra Australis Ignotia and Davis Land. There are entries on first contacts, ships, navigational instruments, mapping, and botany. The scene is carefully set in the introduction, the chronology spans several centuries, and the extensive bibliography offers a guide to further reading. There are more than just dry facts in this book. It has a whiff of salt air, the clash of empires, cross-cultural beach encounters and personal adventure.

Book Theater and Political Process

Download or read book Theater and Political Process written by Ingjerd Hoëm and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Argonauts in the Pacific, famous through Malinowski's work, have not been exempt from general historical developments in the world around them. By focusing on two plays performed by the Tokelau Te Ata, a theater group, the author reveals the self-perceptions of the Tokelau and highlights the dynamic relationship between issues of representation and political processes such as nation building, infrastructural changes and increased regional migration. It is through an analysis of communicative practices, which the author carried out in the home atolls and in the diasporic communities in New Zealand, that we arrive at a proper understanding of how global processes affect local institutions and everyday interaction.

Book Pacific Ethnomathematics

Download or read book Pacific Ethnomathematics written by Nicholas J. Goetzfridt and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking bibliography by distinguished Pacific researcher Nicholas Goetzfridt examines mathematical concepts and practices in Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. It covers number systems, counting, measuring, classifying, spatial relationships, symmetry, geometry, and other aspects of ethnomathematics in relation to a wide range of activities such as trade, education, navigation, construction, rituals and festivals, divination, weaving, tattooing, and music. In compiling nearly five hundred citations, Goetzfridt makes use of the vast resources of writing about the Pacific from the 1700s to the present. In addition to discussing Pacific knowledge systems in general, his introductory chapter includes a helpful overview of the relatively new field of ethnomathematics and important theoretical reflections on the discipline as a research program. Extensive subject and geographic indexes provide numerous ways to experience the rich heritage and history of Pacific ethnomathematical concepts covered in this book, including: the 256 possible knotted fates enabled by the Carolinian sky god Supwunumen, etak segmentation concepts in stellar based voyaging, the highly diverse counting systems of Papua New Guinea, the alignment of stone structures with stars to mark the appearance of the equinox and solstice, and contemporary educational issues in the standardized teaching of Western mathematics.
