Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnological and Philological EssaysI venture to make these observations here primarily; lst, as leading me directly to the arguments which I have to adduce in support of my theories; and 2dly, because the learned Baron, in another part of the same work, and again in his last publication, Cosmos, seems to countenance the ideas of some others, who have held that there were originally various dis tinct creations of beings of the human race, contrary to our faith that God hath made of one blood all the nations upon earth. In the same chapter he says Perhaps this race of copper-coloured men, comprehended under the general name of American Indians, is a mixture of Asiatic tribes, and the aborigines of this vast continent as if the two races were essentially distinct from each other, and as if the copper coloured men, comprehended under the general name of Ame rican Indians, with all their mixtures, could not all of them have been only different migrations of Asiatic tribes, earlier or later arrived on the new continent.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Various Subjects: Philological, Philosophical, Ethnological and Archaeological, Connected With the Prehistorical Records of the Civilized Nations of Ancient Europe, Especially of That Race Which First Occupied Great Britain Having just published a volume of discourses "On the Unity of God's Will as revealed in Scripture; and on the Necessity laid upon all Christian Communities of acknowledging such Will as the only Rule of Life, with special Reference to God's Dealings with Christianized Britain," I publish the several papers contained in the present volume, as embodying my views of the non-scriptural evidence of the same truths, as deducible from documents and monuments, both historical and prehistorical, which I have an opportunity of examining. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Ethnology IT is the aim of this essay to show the importance of ethnology, and especially of recent develop ments of that science, to history. During the last ten years there has been in progress, rudely hindered but not stopped by the war, a movement which has brought the two disciplines into much closer relationship than would have been possible under the conditions which guided the study of ethnology twenty or thirty years ago. At this more remote period anthropology - I use the term anthropology advisedly - was wholly under the dominance of a crude evolutionary standpoint. The aim of the anthropologist was to work out a scheme of human progress according to which language, social organisation, religion, and material arts had developed through the action of certain principles or laws. It was assumed that the manifold peoples of the earth represented stages in this process of evolution, and it was supposed that by the comparative study of the culture of these different peoples it would be possible to formulate the laws by which the process of evolu tion had been directed and governed. It was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Book Confronting the Sacred Durkheim vindicated through philosophical analysis ethnography archaeology long range linguistics and comparative mythology

Download or read book Confronting the Sacred Durkheim vindicated through philosophical analysis ethnography archaeology long range linguistics and comparative mythology written by Wim van Binsbergen and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912) the soci0logist ?mile Durkheim formulated the most influential social-science theory of religion to date. Pivotal are the paired concepts ?sacred / profane?, the notion of ?collective representations?, and the hypothesis that through such religious symbols, society compels its members to venerate herself i.e. to submit to the social as an irreducible instance in its own right. Having grappled with this Durkheimian inheritance for half a century, the anthropologist of religion and intercultural philosopher Wim van Binsbergen in this book traces his own steps in confront_ing Durkheim's sacred, through theoretical criticism, through ethnographic application (to popular Islam in the segmentary social organisation of the highlands of Northwestern Tunisia), and by state-of-the-art long-range methods of linguistic and comparative mythological analysis. Thus, much to his surprise, he demonstrates the continued validity of Durkheim's insights in religion.

Download or read book Analecta Anglo Saxonica Vol 1 written by Louis F. Klipstein and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analecta Anglo-Saxonica, Vol. 1: Selections, in Prose and Verse, From the Anglo-Saxon Literature; With an Introductory Ethnological Essay, and Notes, Critical and Explanatory In the preliminary Emay a cursory ethnographical review has been taken of the ancient and modern nations of Europe, drawn out upon philological principles, which, it is trusted, will not be unacceptable to the student, while some of the facts that it sets forth will have a tendency to correct many erroneous opinions imbibed from our com mon histories and other works. The difficulty has been in giving an epitome of what is a subject for volumes. Some slight changes have been ventured upon in the orthography of a few preper names for the sake of derivation, and to exhibit analogies. Philology, indeed, re quires that such amendments should become general. It is absurd that either ancient, or other forms should be allowed in our language, as modified by their passage through a second, and, in many in stances, also through a third tongue. The specimen of N orman-f rench introduced from the Laws of William the Conqueror, as an appendix to the text, will be sufficient to exemplify that language, which coming in collision with the Anglo Saxon, was eventually obliged to yield to its stronger adversary, but not without leaving traces of its inroad in the subsequent speech of Great Britain. Book Essays in the History of Linguistic Anthropology

Download or read book Essays in the History of Linguistic Anthropology written by Dell H. Hymes and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1983 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropology and linguistics, as historically developing disciplines, have had partly separate roots and traditions. In particular settings and in general, the two disciplines have partly shared, partly differed in the nature of their materials, their favorite types of problem the personalities of their dominant figures, their relations with other disciplines and intellectual current. The two disciplines have also varied in their interrelation with each other and the society about them. Institutional arrangements have reflected the varying degrees of kinship, kithship, and separation. Such relationships themselves form a topic that is central to a history of linguistic anthropology yet marginal to a self-contained history of linguistics or anthropology as either would be conceived by most authors. There exists not only a subject matter for a history of linguistic anthropology, but also a definite need.
