Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnography and Philology of the Hidatsa Indians During the year 1854, while engaged in exploring the then almost unknown country along the Upper Missouri and its tributaries, the writer of this note commenced the work of collecting vocabularies of the languages and other ethnological data respecting the Indians of the Northwest. He continued this work at intervals during a period of about six years, and the materials thus accumulated were finally published in 1862 in the Transactions of the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, under the title of Contributions to the Ethnography and Philology of the Indian Tribes of the Missouri Valley. A brief sketch Of the Hidatsa Indians, and an incomplete vocabulary of their language, was included in that work. The author of the present volume, Dr. Washington Matthews, assist ant surgeon United States Army, Spent some years among these In dians while stationed at a military post in performance Of his Official da ties as a medical officer of the Army. During this period he paid great attention to the same subject, Observing the manners, customs, and other characteristics of these Indians, and making a close and careful study of their language. In this way were secured the materials upon which, elaborated with the utmost care and with conspicuous ability, the present important memoir is based. The topographically natural line of division would follow the hills, just west of Pomona, forming a northward extension of the Santa Ana mountains. On the other hand it must always be regarded as doubtful, in the absence of definite information, whether a people otherwise showing so strong a preference for a mountain habitat would have been likely to hold the large stretch of plain between Colton, Pomona, the Santa Ana river, and the San Gabriel mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnology of the Yuchi Indians In the summers of 1904 and 1905 I spent a total of about four months among the Yuchi Indians of the Creek nation in Oklahoma collecting material for the Bureau of American Ethnology. The investigation was undertaken at the recommendation of Dr. Franz Boas of Columbia University. Funds to cover transportation and the collection of ethnological specimens were furnished by the American Museum of Natural History upon both occasions under Dr. Boas's recommendation. The greater part of the ethnological material offered in this paper was obtained at the same time, and is published with the permission of both the scientific institutions concerned. Again during the winter of 1908 while holding a Harrison fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, I was able under special provision of the Provost to make a third visit to the Yuchi for the purpose of completing my observa tions, and the studies which are embodied in the present work took their final form during this period.
