The Unchosen Me examines the experiences of African American collegiate women and the identity-related pressures they encounter both on and off campus. Rachelle Winkle-Wagner finds that the predominantly white college environment often denies African American students the chance to determine their own sense of self. Even the very programs and policies developed to promote racial equality may effectively impose “unchosen” identities on underrepresented students. She offers clear evidence of this interactive process, showing how race, gender, and identity are created through interactions among one’s self, others, and society. At the heart of this book are the voices of women who struggle to define and maintain their identities during college. Book excerpt: This study investigated the experiences of African students in relation to their ethnic identity, perceived acceptance, and sociocultural adjustment, as well as the interrelationship among the constructs. An exploratory mixed methods research design was utilized in which the qualitative phase was conducted first, results of which were used to inform and guide the quantitative phase. The first three research questions of the study sought to qualitatively explore the emergent constructs whereas the forth research question sought to explore the relationship among the constructs. African students in this study experienced varied challenges as they navigated into their new environment. They, however, rarely sought professional assistance; rather, they preferred culturally-responsive programs initiated by fellow Africans. African students also negotiated two main identities. First, they consolidated their ethnic and national differences and embraced a monolithic African identity. Second, they negotiated a racial identity in a racially polarized society. African students also exhibited varied meta-perceptions. Over all, they perceived themselves as better accepted as individuals than they perceived their in-group to be. In terms of the relationship between ethnic identity, perceived acceptance, and sociocultural adjustment, ethnic pride was positively correlated with sociocultural adjustment factors. The converse was true for ethnic belonging; participants who associated more with fellow Africans tended to experience more adjustment difficulties. Interestingly, participants who held negative meta-perceptions tended to speak more positively of Africa, associate more with fellow Africans, and experience more sociocultural adjustment problems. In conclusion, this study reveals the multidimensionality of Africanity as a form of ethnic identity and how its different facets relate differently with perceived acceptance and sociocultural adjustment. The study also shows how the sojourning experiences of African students are embedded within their meta-perceptions, with negative meta-perceptions having adverse effects on sociocultural adjustment. Findings from this study have practical implications on the adjustment of African students in particular and international students in general.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The examination of a student's racial identity beliefs along with the extent to which being Black is a central part of his or her self-concept provides a novel, insightful approach to explicating the relationship between ethnic identity and academic achievement (Chavous, et. al., 2003). The implications of one's ethnicity are of particular interest to those who seek to understand the academic underperformance of African American adolescents relative to that of other ethnic groups. In an effort to further clarify the role of Black racial identity with respect to academic achievement, this study investigated racial centrality, public regard and private regard beliefs in relation to the attitudes and behaviors that inform academic achievement and the grade point average of African American high school students. A total of 289 public school students completed the Multidimensional Model of Black Identity, School Strategies Scale and an instrument on which they provided demographic data, socioeconomic status, frequency of parental involvement, academic and career aspirations, and academic values. Cluster analyses conducted on the three subscales of the MMBI replicated the four racial identity profile groups previously identified by Chavous et. al. (2003). Additionally, among the ninth grade students in this sample, Alienated students achieved significantly higher grade point averages than did Idealized students. Differences in the achievement levels of racial identity profile groups remained consistent across grade levels. Further, Idealized students reported more frequent instances of parental involvement than did students of other racial identity profile groups. No significant differences were found between racial identity profile groups with regard to number of parents in the home, race of the parents, socioeconomic status, academic and career aspirations, student values and self-regulatory strategy utilization. These results empirically support Fordham and Ogbu's (1988) hypothesis that a strong ethnic association relates negatively to academic achievement among African American students.

In agreement with Relyea, who sees The Outsider as an endeavor to analyse Cross' consciousness as a technique for exploring social problems, I will discuss the roles of anxiety and alienation as determining factors for Cross' identity. In the tradition of naturalist writing, is Cross to be considered a victim of circumstance?
