This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral System and the Atonement Somewhat over twenty-one years ago, I received, through another, an invitation from Prof. E. A. Park, D. D., of Andover, to write one or more Articles on the Atonement for the Bibliotheca Sacra, with special reference to Dr. Bushnell's Work entitled Vicarious Sacri fice, which I accepted. Writing on the subject increased in sight of its grounds and rootings in the nature of the moral sys tem, and unfolded comprehension of what is the breadth and length and height and depth both of the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, and of the relations of His atonement to God and His universal society for the salvation of man. 'about two thirds of Part I. And some of Part II. Were written at Grinnell, Iowa, during some more than two years before April, 1869, when, in an evil hour, I resigned my Pastorship there to undertake the founding ofa College at Kidder, Missouri. That enterprise so absorbed my time that this Work was almost wholly suspended, till in June, 1874, when, being wronged out of my College, I resumed and prosecuted it as persistently as possible, amidst numerous hindrances, until in the early part of 1878, when, about twelve years after it was begun, I wrote Finis. Before I left Grinnell, I decided to write a Book, instead of the Article or Articles at first designed; and if I had remained there, the Work would have been completed within three or four years from that time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atonement Was the salvation of man. His name Shall be called Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins. This is the divine mission for which Christ was sent into the world. God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. But what is the divine method of saving the world by Christ? Was the salvation of the human race to be purely an intellectual process, requiring only a divine teacher of the truth? Is the production of this great mental, moral, and spiritual change a function of the reason only, when it has been taught by Christ; or was the process of man's salvation to be ethical as well as rational, dc manding a perfect moral law, illustrated by the. Book Altar Cross and Community Classic Reprint

Download or read book Altar Cross and Community Classic Reprint written by W. F. Lofthouse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Altar, Cross, and Community Some years ago, in a volume called Ethics and Atonement, I endeavoured to show that the object of the Atonement was ethical that is, that it was to enable us, in Biblical language, to do righteousness, ' and that such righteous ness was not fulfilled simply by actions of a certain kind, but by the maintenance of certain personal relations. In a second book, Ethics and the F amily, I argued that the type of the society in which these relations are adequately maintained is to be found in the family, the society of husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters; and I urged that the universal existence of the family, though in diverse forms, showed that these relations are in the true sense of the word natural to mankind. In these lectures I take up what has long seemed to me a subject connected with both these claims. The rite of sacrifice is almost as widespread as the institution of the family, and I have here given reasons for holding that just as the family, at its best, furnishes the type of moral intercourse between persons, in the same way sacrifice, rightly understood, furnishes the type of the reconcilia tion by which these relations are made possible; a reconcilia tion which is the same in principle when both parties are human and when one is divine. The book does not claim to be a treatise on the Atone ment. At most, it considers an aspect of the doctrine which no treatise on the Atonement can afford to neglect the less so because, through the whole history of Christian theology, sacrifice and atonement, the altar and the cross, have been so closely linked together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Substitution: A Treatise on the Atonement All human goodness and blessingstand in vital relation to the mediatorial government of God. So far as theology faithfully reveals God and His ways towards man, it presents the highest standard and motives of duty, and unveils the rich provisions of grace. To repudiate it, therefore, is to remove the most fitting basis of human virtue and happiness. History abounds with evidence that pure doctrine is the true seed of high morality and spiritual peace. A man, or a people, abandoning belief of the fundamental truths of Christianity, or allowing them to die out as of no practical use, may retain for a time something of the morality and reverent spirit which they produce; but the natural tendency will be to depravation of moral tone and principle. The material of pure theology is religious truth, losing which the light becomes darkness, and pious emotion degenerates into morbid sentiment, or fanatical superstition, from which infidelity and impiety arc the frequent rebound. Of all Christian doctrines, none holds a more central relation to the rest, or has a more practical bearing on the character and conduct of men than that of the atonement. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atonement; Soteriology: The Sacrificial, in Contrast With the Penal, Substitutionary, and Merely Moral or Exemplary Theories of Propitiation The third part comprises a brief argument in favor of an atonement for all men. The matter was originally prepared for the theo logical classes, and was delivered to them in lecture form. For convenience this form is retained in the book. At one time I thought of publishing the whole in three volumes, each part forming one volume. But, for reasons deemed sufficient, an abridgement 'of the whole is published in one volume. All the parts, especially the first and third, have been very much abridged. The third part, as originally pre pared for the classes, comprises a full examination of the arguments for and against a limited atone merit. Book System of Christian Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book System of Christian Ethics Classic Reprint written by Isaac August Dorner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from System of Christian Ethics The last twenty years of Dorner's life were clouded by the dementia of his youngest son - a youth of the brightest promise, who, while pursuing his gymnasium studies, was overtaken with the disease from which he has never recovered. To those who knew the intensely domestic and affectionate nature of the man, the manner in which he bore this trial was a touching revelation of the depth of his Christian faith and resignation. And when to this affliction was added his own physical suffering, his Christian character still bore the test. As Professor Kleinert says, in his memorial address before the Berlin Faculty, In all this no complaint passed over his lips, no painful word concerning his bodily pain. Scarcely a quiver of the hand, or a tear in the eye, betrayed his mental suffering, when he had to surrender to other hands one after another of the official duties and voluntary labours of benevolence which had grown into his very heart. He suffered not like a Stoic, with a heart steeled against the Medusa gaze of a brazen fate. He suffered like a child of God that receives from the Father's hand, with unwavering trust, even what is hard to bear; like one that has peace in the atonement and has hope reaching beyond death. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Atonement I have but further to say that the work discusses the leading objections to the Atonement as a vicarious sacrifice and satisfaction to God. It contends that Christ in our stead bore, to the extent which public justice demanded, or which God as the Great Moral Magistrate demanded, the penal consequences of our sins. Representatives of the principal theories are brought forward and criticized the true idea is set off to advantage as on the background of the false and the Biblical view of Christ as the Divine-human Redeemer and the propitiation for the sins of the world maintained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Ephesians: Its Doctrine and Ethics But both in substance and in style the Lectures still retain clear traces of their original character. They were written for a popular congregation, not for the solitary student. And I do not know that I should have had the courage to publish them but for the very kind and hearty reception which has been given both in England and America to a similar series of Lectures which I published some years ago on the Epistle to the Hebrews. I have learnt that there are large numbers of Christian people to whom expository lectures of this popular kind are of more service than ordinary commentaries. Download or read book Landmarks of New Testament Morality Classic Reprint written by George Matheson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks of New Testament Morality Our aim in this volume has been to compress into a few connected chapters what seemed to us to be the distinctive and salient principles of New Testa ment Morality. In pursuance of this aim we have striven to keep the book strictly within the limits prescribed by its title. We have therefore kept in abeyance all subjects of dogmatic Theology. The questions relating to the theological nature of sin, the origin of sin, the punishment of sin, and the atonement for sin, are outside the scope of the present treatise; for, however much they touch the moral sphere, they contain an additional or transcendental element which demands a separate mode of study. We have only to add that as the drift of the work is not historical, we have made few references to the opinions of others, and these have gradually disappeared as we have come into contact with those familiar sources from which alone such a work must be ultimately derived-the books of the New Testament itself.
