Book excerpt: This volume evaluates Thomas Bradwardine's view of time as a mathematical, philosophical and theological concept within the context of ancient and medieval discussions of the problem of time. The book begins with an historiographical analysis of Bradwardine's mathematical and theological works, followed by an examination of the problem of time in classical, early medieval and thirteenth-century texts. Next, a series of chapters surveys Bradwardine's view of time as it related to proportionality, contingency, continuity and predestination. A final chapter establishes Bradwardine's place among fourteenth-century natural philosophers and theologians. As it uses a wide range of Bradwardine's writings, this book is able to show how Bradwardine's philosophical and theological views converged. In particular, it deals with the reception of Aquinas' thinking about the eternity of the world by theologians at the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. De Grijs defends the thesis that Aquinas' main interest in De Aeternitate Mundi is not philosophical but theological; while Aertsen opposes this thesis and tries to demonstrate Aquinas' philosophical purposes by comparing his De Aeternitate Mundi with his De Potentia and by study of his concept of creation. Van Veldhuijsen sketches the difference between Aquinas and Bonaventure in this respect. M. Hoenen concentrates on the importance of William de la Mare's Correctorium fratris Thomae and of the Correctoria Corruptorii for our understanding of the history of the reception of the views of Aquinas. F. Thijssen discusses the criticism of the Oxford theologian Henry of Harclay (died 1317) of Aquinas' views on two central issues that are involved in an eternal world: the traversal of an infinity and the existence of unequal infinities. Van Veldhuijsen, finally investigates Aquinas' reception by Richard of Middleton.

This book offers a comprehensive study of al-Ghazali's life and his understanding of cosmology-how God creates things and events in the world, how human acts relate to God's power, and how the universe is structured. Frank Griffel presents a serious revision of traditional views on al-Ghazali, showing that his most important achievement was the creation of a new rationalist theology in which he transformed the Aristotelian views of thinkers such as Avicenna to accord with intellectual currents that were well-established within Muslim theological discourse. The al-Ghazali that emerges offers many surprises, particularly on his motives for leaving Baghdad and the nature of his "seclusion" afterwards. Griffel demonstrates that al-Ghazali intended to create a new cosmology that moved away from concerns held earlier by Muslim theologians and Arab philosophers. This new theology aimed to provide a framework for the pursuit of the natural sciences and a basis for Islamic science and philosophy to flourish beyond the 12th century.
