Book American Jewry and the Re Invention of the East European Jewish Past

Download or read book American Jewry and the Re Invention of the East European Jewish Past written by Markus Krah and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The postwar decades were not the “golden era” in which American Jews easily partook in the religious revival, liberal consensus, and suburban middle-class comfort. Rather it was a period marked by restlessness and insecurity born of the shock about the Holocaust and of the unprecedented opportunities in American society. American Jews responded to loss and opportunity by obsessively engaging with the East European past. The proliferation of religious texts on traditional spirituality, translations of Yiddish literature, historical essays , photographs and documents of shtetl culture, theatrical and musical events, culminating in the Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, illustrate the grip of this past on post-1945 American Jews. This study shows how American Jews reimagined their East European past to make it usable for their American present. By rewriting their East European history, they created a repertoire of images, stories, and ideas that have shaped American Jewry to this day.

Book Ambivalent Embrace

Download or read book Ambivalent Embrace written by Rachel Kranson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new cultural history of Jewish life and identity in the United States after World War II focuses on the process of upward mobility. Rachel Kranson challenges the common notion that most American Jews unambivalently celebrated their generally strong growth in economic status and social acceptance during the booming postwar era. In fact, a significant number of Jewish religious, artistic, and intellectual leaders worried about the ascent of large numbers of Jews into the American middle class. Kranson reveals that many Jews were deeply concerned that their lives—affected by rapidly changing political pressures, gender roles, and religious practices—were becoming dangerously disconnected from authentic Jewish values. She uncovers how Jewish leaders delivered jeremiads that warned affluent Jews of hypocrisy and associated "good" Jews with poverty, even at times romanticizing life in America's immigrant slums and Europe's impoverished shtetls. Jewish leaders, while not trying to hinder economic development, thus cemented an ongoing identification with the Jewish heritage of poverty and marginality as a crucial element in an American Jewish ethos.

Book Radical Roots

  • Author : Denise D. Meringolo
  • Publisher : Amherst College Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 1943208204
  • Pages : 633 pages

Download or read book Radical Roots written by Denise D. Meringolo and published by Amherst College Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 633 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While all history has the potential to be political, public history is uniquely so: public historians engage in historical inquiry outside the bubble of scholarly discourse, relying on social networks, political goals, practices, and habits of mind that differ from traditional historians. Radical Roots: Public History and a Tradition of Social Justice Activism theorizes and defines public history as future-focused, committed to the advancement of social justice, and engaged in creating a more inclusive public record. Edited by Denise D. Meringolo and with contributions from the field's leading figures, this groundbreaking collection addresses major topics such as museum practices, oral history, grassroots preservation, and community-based learning. It demonstrates the core practices that have shaped radical public history, how they have been mobilized to promote social justice, and how public historians can facilitate civic discourse in order to promote equality. "This is a much-needed recalibration, as professional organizations and practitioners across genres of public history struggle to diversify their own ranks and to bring contemporary activists into the fold." -- Catherine Gudis, University of California, Riverside. "Taken all together, the articles in this volume highlight the persistent threads of justice work that has characterized the multifaceted history of public history as well as the challenges faced in doing that work."--Patricia Mooney-Melvin, The Public Historian

Book Down Home

    Book Details:
  • Author : Leonard Rogoff
  • Publisher : Univ of North Carolina Press
  • Release : 2010-04-15
  • ISBN : 0807895997
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Down Home written by Leonard Rogoff and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping chronicle of Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, this beautifully illustrated volume incorporates oral histories, original historical documents, and profiles of fascinating individuals. The first comprehensive social history of its kind, Down Home demonstrates that the story of North Carolina Jews is attuned to the national story of immigrant acculturation but has a southern twist. Keeping in mind the larger southern, American, and Jewish contexts, Leonard Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states. He explores how Jews very often settled in North Carolina's small towns, rather than in its large cities, and he documents the reach and vitality of Jewish North Carolinians' participation in building the New South and the Sunbelt. Many North Carolina Jews were among those at the forefront of a changing South, Rogoff argues, and their experiences challenge stereotypes of a society that was agrarian and Protestant. More than 125 historic and contemporary photographs complement Rogoff's engaging epic, providing a visual panorama of Jewish social, cultural, economic, and religious life in North Carolina. This volume is a treasure to share and to keep. Published in association with the Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina, Down Home is part of a larger documentary project of the same name that will include a film and a traveling museum exhibition, to be launched in June 2010.

When Tommy's group went thru the room we were deep into an arrangement of mine, of a popular war song called, "On a Wing and a Prayer." they all slowed down a moment to hear what we were doing I was excited. Upon returning to our hotel, I found a note in my box. I just about fainted. It said "please come by the stage door to see me," signed Lou Zito ? manager of the T.D. Orchestra. Can you imagine the excitement in my brain? Wow! It was like an explosion. He told me that Tommy wanted to see me about joining the band. I was totally tongue tied. He took me to Tommy's dressing room. There he was as big as life and he asked me to join his band. There you go that dream Ethel had came true.
