Book The Eternal Criminal Record

Download or read book The Eternal Criminal Record written by James B. Jacobs and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-09 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over sixty million Americans, possessing a criminal record overshadows everything else about their public identity. A rap sheet, or even a court appearance or background report that reveals a run-in with the law, can have fateful consequences for a person’s interactions with just about everyone else. The Eternal Criminal Record makes transparent a pervasive system of police databases and identity screening that has become a routine feature of American life. The United States is unique in making criminal information easy to obtain by employers, landlords, neighbors, even cyberstalkers. Its nationally integrated rap-sheet system is second to none as an effective law enforcement tool, but it has also facilitated the transfer of ever more sensitive information into the public domain. While there are good reasons for a person’s criminal past to be public knowledge, records of arrests that fail to result in convictions are of questionable benefit. Simply by placing someone under arrest, a police officer has the power to tag a person with a legal history that effectively incriminates him or her for life. In James Jacobs’s view, law-abiding citizens have a right to know when individuals in their community or workplace represent a potential threat. But convicted persons have rights, too. Jacobs closely examines the problems created by erroneous record keeping, critiques the way the records of individuals who go years without a new conviction are expunged, and proposes strategies for eliminating discrimination based on criminal history, such as certifying the records of those who have demonstrated their rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book The Waters of Eternal Youth

Download or read book The Waters of Eternal Youth written by Donna Leon and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twenty-fifth mystery in the New York Times–bestselling series “is cause for celebration. . . . Leon brilliantly exposes the corrupt world of Venice” (Bay Area Reporter). At a fundraising dinner for a Venetian charity, a wealthy and aristocratic patroness asks Brunetti if he will investigate the fifteen-year-old attempted drowning of her granddaughter, which left the girl irreparably brain damaged. Brunetti’s not sure what to do, but out of a mixture of curiosity, pity, and a willingness to fulfill the wishes of a guilt-wracked older woman—who happens to be his mother-in-law’s best friend—he agrees. Brunetti soon finds himself unable to let the case rest, if indeed there is a case. Awash in the haunting story of a woman trapped in a damaged perpetual childhood and the rhythms and concerns of contemporary Venetian life, from historical preservation to housing to new waves of African migrants, The Waters of Eternal Youth is another wonderful addition to this series. “Donna Leon’s Venetian mysteries never disappoint . . . A bittersweet story that makes us appreciate Brunetti’s philosophical take on the indignities, insanities, and cruelties of life.” —The New York Times Book Review “A new Brunetti adventure is always worth celebrating. . . . In a marvelous and moving last scene, we glimpse a moment of almost transcendent beauty that makes us realize again how important this series is to our reading lives.” —Booklist (starred review) “Leon’s latest novel marks the 25th anniversary of her wonderfully atmospheric series. . . . A sweet poignancy flows through Leon’s narrative like the faint smell of chrysanthemums bordering the ancient palazzos.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Book Believers Eternal Security

Download or read book Believers Eternal Security written by Oppong Kyekyeku and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you understand the concept of eternal salvation through Christ Jesus? Can a believer lose his or her everlasting salvation given by God due to circumstance? Are you afraid of losing your eternal salvation of grace through faith in Jesus since you believed? Is there anything you can do to secure your everlasting salvation without losing it? The answers to these questions and beyond are what this book is all about. Believers’ eternal security is only based on eternal salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, which guarantees our freedom in Christ because of the grace pertaining to salvation we cannot lose. But regrettably, many believers are still under oppression of fear for uncertainty of their eternal salvation. They believed that they must hire security personnel to protect or hold their eternal salvation like an egg or work hard to secure it; otherwise, it will fall on the rock and break away for them to lose it, which in fact is completely a delusional threat from the deceiver who is the devil that always contradicts the true Word of God. Nowhere in the New Testament scriptures can you find such theory or doctrine; it is totally and deliberately manmade fearmongering, danger, and confusing premature believers. For if in fact you truly believed in Christ and have received salvation, God who can never lie and can never change His mind has given it to you, then it’s eternal, it’s everlasting, it’s forever, and it has no end. You can never ever lose it irrespective of whatever happens. Eternal salvation is and will never be partial to lose it halfway since God who promised believers is impartial. Don’t believe any garbage more than the true living Word of God. Believer’s eternal security is confidently never losing the everlasting salvation received from God through Christ. Because eternal salvation is not a reward to the righteous but a gift to the guilty. Amen.
