Download or read book Beyond Reception written by Patrick Baker and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-04-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Reception applies a new concept for analyzing cultural change, known as ‘transformation', the study of Renaissance humanism. Traditional scholarship takes the Renaissance humanists at their word, that they were simply viewing the ancient world as it actually was and recreating its key features within their own culture. Initially modern studies in the classical tradition accepted this claim and saw this process as largely passive. 'Transformation theory' emphasizes the active role played by the receiving culture both in constructing a vision of the past and in transforming that vision into something that was a meaningful part of the later culture. A chapter than explains the terminology and workings of 'transformation theory' is followed by essays by nine established experts that suggest how the key disciplines of grammar, rhetoric, history, poetry, and philosophy in the Renaissance represent transformations of what went on in these fields in ancient Greece and Rome. The picture that emerges suggests that Renaissance humanism as it was actually practiced both received and transformed the classical past, at the same time as it constructed a vision of that past that still resonates today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen classic essays illuminate a broad cross-section of the intellectual history of the Renaissance. The Journal of the History of Ideashas, over the years, published many important articles on the Renaissance; this selection provides a significant index of American scholarship in the field in the first twenty-five years of the journal's publication. Apart from the quality of the papers, the main criterion of selection has been their diversity. The editors aimed to present a broad cross-section of the intellectual history of the Renaissance, and have on the whole preferred comprehensive rather than monographic studies. The so-called problem of the Renaissance is represented by FERGUSON; the historical thought of the period by WEISINGER, BARON, and REYNOLDS; its social, moral and religious thought by ADAMS, RICE and TRINKAUS; humanism by GRAY; philsophy and science by CASSIRER, RANDALL and BOUWSMA; literature by TUVE; the visual artsby SCHAPIRO; and music by LOWINSKY. First published 1968.

Book Magic and the Dignity of Man

Download or read book Magic and the Dignity of Man written by Brian P. Copenhaver and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book is nothing less than the definitive study of a text long considered central to understanding the Renaissance and its place in Western culture.” —James Hankins, Harvard University Pico della Mirandola died in 1494 at the age of thirty-one. During his brief and extraordinary life, he invented Christian Kabbalah in a book that was banned by the Catholic Church after he offered to debate his ideas on religion and philosophy with anyone who challenged him. Today he is best known for a short speech, the Oration on the Dignity of Man, written in 1486 but never delivered. Sometimes called a “Manifesto of the Renaissance,” this text has been regarded as the foundation of humanism and a triumph of secular rationality over medieval mysticism. Brian Copenhaver upends our understanding of Pico’s masterwork by re-examining this key document of modernity. An eminent historian of philosophy, Copenhaver shows that the Oration is not about human dignity. In fact, Pico never wrote an Oration on the Dignity of Man and never heard of that title. Instead he promoted ascetic mysticism, insisting that Christians need help from Jews to find the path to heaven—a journey whose final stages are magic and Kabbalah. Through a rigorous philological reading of this much-studied text, Copenhaver transforms the history of the idea of dignity and reveals how Pico came to be misunderstood over the course of five centuries. Magic and the Dignity of Man is a seismic shift in the study of one of the most remarkable thinkers of the Renaissance.
