By focusing on functional gain, critical awareness and emotive connection, even the most multifaceted and complex technology can be made to feel straightforward and become an integral part of daily life. Researchers, designers and developers must understand how to progress or appropriate the right technical and human knowledge to inform their innovations. The 1st International Smart Design conference provides a timely forum and brings together researchers and practitioners to discuss issues, identify challenges and future directions, and share their R&D findings and experiences in the areas of design, materials and technology. This proceedings of the 1st Smart Design conference held at Nottingham Trent University in November 2011 includes summaries of the talks given on topics ranging from intelligent textiles design to pharmaceutical packaging to the impact of social and emotional factors on design choices with the aim of informing and inspiring future application and development of smart design.

Book Artificial Intelligence in Design 00

Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Design 00 written by John S. Gero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing is one of the foundations for change in our society. It is a fundamental precursor to manufacturing, fabrication and construction. Design research aims to develop an understanding of designing and to produce models of designing that can be used to aid designing. The papers in this volume are from the Sixth International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Design (AID'00) held in June 2000, in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. They represent the state of the art and the cutting edge of research and development in this field, and demonstrate both the depth and breadth of the artificial intelligence paradigm in design. They point the way for the development of advanced computer-based tools to aid designers, and describe advances in both theory and application. This volume will be of particular interest to researchers, developers, and users of advanced computer systems in design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESIGN ECOVISIONS – Volume 2: Research on design and sustainability in Brazil presents the results of the panel discussions of the 6o Simpósio Brasileiro de Design Sustentável + International Symposium on Sustainable Design (SBDS + ISSD 2017), held in 2017 in Belo Horizonte. The event aimed at gathering researchers, students and design professionals, as well as representatives of the productive and governmental sectors, who seek to discuss the current and future framework of design in relation to various aspects of sustainable development. It was based on dynamics for exchange, sharing, and collaboration among design researchers engaged with sustainability, previously experienced in the 5th edition of the symposium, held in 2015 in Rio de Janeiro, and which results were re¬corded in the first volume of this series. The theme of Volume 2 is the tripod of sustainability, and it is addressed by reflecting on "design, territory and culture"; "social innovation and collaborative models"; "ecomaterials"; "environmental labelling"; "design and craftsmanship"; and "circular economy". The chapters reflect the researchers' contributions and their discussions, and are organized in three parts. The first encompasses design in the context of sustainable consump¬tion and production, focusing on materials and environmental labelling. The second seeks to discuss design and emerging approaches through the concepts of local production, territory and collaborative models. The third part consists of reports of experiences from the event or from design practice. Thus, combining theory and practice, this book seeks to materialize the meeting as a relevant event for the area, and a fruitful space for debates on the theme of sustainability allied to design in Brazil.

Book Reverse Design

Download or read book Reverse Design written by Ana Cristina Broega and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collaboration between the Textile Department of the University of Minho and the Brazilian Association of Studies and Research (ABEPEM) has led to an international platform for the exchange of research in the field of Fashion and Design: CIMODE. This platform is designed as a biennial congress that takes place in different European and Latin American countries with the co-organization of another university in each location. The current edition was jointly organized by the University of Minho and the Centro Superior de Diseño de Moda (CSDMM) - Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. CIMODE's mission is to explore fashion and design from a social, cultural, psychological and communication perspective, and to bring together different approaches and perceptions of practice, education and the culture of design and fashion. Through an interdisciplinary dialogue and intercultural perspective, CIMODE wants to generate and present new scenarios about the present and future of fashion and design. ‘DISEÑO AL REVÉS’ (‘BACKWARD DESIGN’) was the central theme of the 4th CIMODE (Madrid, Spain, 21-23 May 2018), which produced a highly topical and relevant number of academic publications presented in this book.

Book Textiles Identity and Innovation Design the Future

Download or read book Textiles Identity and Innovation Design the Future written by Gianni Montagna and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D_TEX presents itself as a starting point at a crossroads of ideas and debates around the complex universe of Textile Design in all its forms, manifestations and dimensions. The textile universe, allied to mankind since its beginnings, is increasingly far from being an area of exhausted possibilities, each moment proposing important innovations that need a presentation, discussion and maturation space that is comprehensive and above all inter- and transdisciplinary. Presently, the disciplinary areas where the textile area is present are increasing and important, such as fashion, home textiles, technical clothing and accessories, but also construction and health, among others, and can provide new possibilities and different disciplinary areas and allowing the production of new knowledge. D_TEX proposes to join the thinking of design, with technologies, tradition, techniques, and related areas, in a single space where ideas are combined with the technique and with the projectual and research capacity, thus providing for the creation of concepts, opinions, associations of ideas, links and connections that allow the conception of ideas, products and services. The interdisciplinary nature of design is a reality that fully reaches the textile material in its essence and its practical application, through the synergy and contamination by the different interventions that make up the multidisciplinary teams of research. The generic theme of D_TEX Textile Design Conference 2017, held at Lisbon School of Architecture of the University of Lisbon, Portugal on November 2-4, 2017, is Design the Future, starting from the crossroads of ideas and debates, a new starting point for the exploration of textile materials, their identities and innovations in all their dimensions.

Book The Politics of the Artificial

Download or read book The Politics of the Artificial written by Victor Margolin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging from the world of commercial art and product styling, design has now become completely integrated into human life. Its marks are all around us, from the chairs we sit on to the Web sites on our computer screens. One of the pioneers of design studies and still one of its most distinguished practitioners, Victor Margolin here offers a timely meditation on design and its study at the turn of the millennium and charts new directions for the future development of both fields. Divided into sections on the practice and study of design, the essays in The Politics of the Artificial cover such topics as design history, design research, design as a political tool, sustainable design, and the problems of design's relation to advanced technologies. Margolin also examines the work of key practitioners such as the matrix designer Ken Isaacs. Throughout the book Margolin demonstrates the underlying connections between the many ways of reflecting on and practicing design. He argues for the creation of an international, interdisciplinary field of design research and proposes a new ethical agenda for designers and researchers that encompasses the responsibility to users, the problems of sustainability, and the complicated questions of how to set boundaries for applying advanced technology to solve the problems of human life. Opinionated and erudite, Victor Margolin's The Politics of the Artificial breaks fresh ground in its call for a new approach to design research and practice. Designers, engineers, architects, anthropologists, sociologists, and historians will all benefit from its insights.
