Download or read book Healthy and energy efficient buildings written by Sunil K. Sansaniwal and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic on 'Healthy and Energy Efficient Buildings' focuses on the emerging need for sustainable and healthy indoor environments. The built environment contributes significantly to energy consumption and environmental degradation, leading to adverse effects on human health and well-being. Therefore, this Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research that addresses the complex interplay between building energy efficiency and occupant health. The scope of the Research Topic covers topics such as energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, sustainable energy, health and well-being, building codes and standards, energy management and green building practices. The ultimate goal of the Research Topic is to promote sustainable building practices and enhance the well-being of building occupants while reducing the environmental impact of buildings. While energy efficiency has become a top priority in building design, there has been less emphasis on creating indoor environments that are conducive to good health. To achieve the goal of this Research Topic, recent advances in building design, construction, and operation must be incorporated. These include the use of advanced materials and technologies, such as smart sensors and automation systems that can monitor and control indoor air quality, temperature, and lighting levels to create optimal indoor conditions for occupants. Additionally, the integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, can help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings. In order to promote healthy buildings, there is a need for more research on the impact of building design and materials on indoor air quality and occupant health. This includes exploring the use of natural ventilation and passive cooling strategies, as well as the use of low-emitting materials and finishes that do not off-gas harmful chemicals. This Research Topic seeks to address the need for sustainable buildings that prioritize both energy efficiency and occupant health.

Download or read book Energy Efficiency in Developing Countries written by Suzana Tavares da Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comparative analysis of energy efficiency policies in developing countries. Although there is a vast amount of literature available about renewable energy policy and implementation in the developing world, energy efficiency tends to lack attention. This book fills this lacuna by examining the current state of the field and scope for future improvements. Drawing on a wide range of case studies including Brazil, China and Chile, the authors use a comparative approach to examine the policies and programmes being implemented, looking at the existing legal frameworks and regulatory challenges. By showcasing stories of success, as well as barriers to energy efficiency, they highlight the opportunities for increased energy access and efficiency and demonstrate how these opportunities may directly impact on climate change mitigation. This volume will be a useful resource for scholars and practitioners with an interest in energy policy and efficiency, climate change and international development.

Download or read book Removing Barriers to Environmental Comfort in the Global South written by Laura Marín-Restrepo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-11 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how comfort, energy and climate change in developing countries and vulnerable sectors of the population relate to buildings. The building sector is currently facing significant challenges connected to energy consumption, energy poverty and climate change effects. When studied in developing countries and vulnerable sectors of the population, these factors, which are commonplace in the tropics and the southern hemisphere, are interlinked and share a critical component: environmental comfort. Although progress has been made in environmental comfort through research and the development of standards and policies at the international level, in the Global South, where the countries with the highest levels of income inequality are concentrated, environmental comfort has its own characteristics and challenges that prevent a clear understanding from the established vision of the Global North. This book presents research, theories and techniques related to Thermal comfort, Indoor air quality, Visual comfort, and Acoustic comfort and its relationship with energy use and energy efficiency, seeking to address different barriers to environmental comfort. It shows how to improve the way buildings are designed and operated to promote healthier environmental conditions and more sustainable construction, by presenting studies and reflections carried out in the target geographical area: the Global South. In this way, this book contributes to developing the concept of environmental comfort, visualising how progress has been made in understanding it from a tropical and southern perspective, and posing common challenges. The book is intended for engineers, architects, and researchers of the built environment who are interested in environmental comfort and its influence on energy consumption, energy poverty, and other related factors in the Global South context. It is also a useful resource for decision-makers and public policy developers concerned with the indoor comfort of buildings. Moreover, the book aims to provide guidance for those in developing countries by gathering existing knowledge in the field for the tropics and southern hemisphere climatic and sociocultural contexts, allowing us to move forward in this subject with actions and proposed solutions that fit our particular needs.
