Book excerpt: The Niger delta with its gentle slope and low elevation is extremely sensitive to effects of climate change. Its adaptive capacity is the second lowest in terms of socio-economic development in Nigeria. Quantitative studies on developing measures for coastal planning and management in the lower Niger delta have been limited by data availability and inaccessibility of parts of the delta. The use of satellite data can help bridge the data gap by providing ancillary data (imagery, elevation, altimetry etc.) that can be used to quantify the effects of SLR in the Niger delta. This thesis uses satellite data as the main source for hydrodynamic modelling and GIS analysis. Until recently such data might not have the accuracy and precision of directly measured data. However recent innovative approaches have enabled better exploitation of satellite data to overcome these limitations and produce adequate results to assess the impact of SLR on the Niger delta in an integrated way that will lead to practical recommendations for adaptation. Using projected global eustatic SLR values in combination with land subsidence, this thesis estimated SLR levels for the Niger delta and its effect on inundation areas and flood extent. The results indicate that the Niger delta is very vulnerable to inundation and that even minimal SLR will affect flooding in the lower Niger delta since the area continues to subside. A new coastal vulnerability index was developed in this thesis by evaluating physical, social and human influence indicators of exposure, susceptibility and resilience. The results show that parts of the Niger delta are highly vulnerable to SLR and need adequate mitigation/adaptation measures to protect them. It is recommended that sustainable local resilience practices already being used in parts of the Niger delta should be included in adaptation planning.

Book excerpt: This study aims at assessing how riparian zones have been altered through various land use activities and the implications of its capacity to mitigate flood. The study focused mainly on examining the land use/land cover changes within the riparian zone over a period of 20 years. The vulnerability of the riparian zone to flood were analyzed using remote sensing datasets. Flood vulnerability models were created based on the elevation and land cover type. A Euclidean distance (700 m) was created using the shuttle radar topographical mapping (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM) of the lake and its riparian zone. The flood attenuation (150 m buffer) and riparian habitat (500 m) zones (areas) within the riparian zone of the lake were then created using the extracted lake boundary. Landsat 7 (for 1999) and 8 (for 2019) covering both zones were classified using the Maximum Likelihood Classification method. The results revealed that the built-up area increased from 2.04 to 4.54 km2 between 1999 and 2019 while water body, grassland, and forest decreased from 0.05 to 0.04 km2, 0.37 to 0.12 km2 and 1.84 to 1.82 km2 over the period of the study. The results further show that about 18.9% of built-up areas were within the very high vulnerability zone of flood as of the year 2019. The results reveal that the riparian area cover is declining in the study area, despite its ecological services in reducing the effect of floods by slowing down runoff, trapping sediments and enhancing infiltration. The pattern of distribution of the land cover classes at different flood vulnerability levels within zones indicates that the more the alteration of both zones' landscape, the more vulnerable they are to flood. The study concluded that there is a significant level of structural change of the riparian zone which increases its vulnerability level to flooding.

Although floods are relatively common during the June to September rainy season in Ethiopia, the magnitude of the current flooding in 2006 is unprecedented. In year 2006 the country has experienced some of the heaviest and most intense rains on record; resulting in flash floods and/or the overflow of rivers, lakes and dams, where local residents have been advised to leave. The impact of the disaster in terms of lives, infrastructure, livelihoods, and basic coping mechanisms has yet to be assessed The rainfall variability analysis of the Lake Tana (LT) basin in 2006 showed an on average 43% increase in wet season rainfall than the normal (mean). All rainfall gauging stations show an increase in rainfall in 2006. Similarly, the variability analysis of major rivers also showed that on average 35% increase in flood season streamflow of G/Abay, Gumara, Rib, Megech, and Koga. The trend of these rivers shows that maximum runoff for the year 2006 was higher than the mean of the long term maximum flood. Whereas Lake Tana maximum flood level of 2006 (1787.155masl) shows an increase of 16 cm only from the mean flood levels of previous records (1787 masl). The Pearson III method of the moment probability distribution is the best fit for Megech and Rib rivers. For Gumara river Pearson III probability weighted moment distribution better estimate flood quantiles with less standard error. It is also found that Gamma two probability weighted moment is the best fit for Lake Tana water surface level. In general, from rainfall and flood frequency analysis the 2006-year flooding may have a chance to occur once in six years in LTB. The 2006-year flood damage indicates that there is a high impact on agricultural production of Lake Tana surrounding plains. 107,647 peoples were actually affected by floods. At least 448, 910 quantal of food grain, 1230 domestic animals, 9634 chickens, and 1088 bee-hives were damaged by the 2006 flood. The impacts of flooding on socio-economic and environmental resource indicators were qualitatively assessed. Totally twenty-seven indicators were assessed.
