This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 4R assessment this diet was separated into a high cod diet for the southern part of 4R(d) and a low cod diet for the northern part of 4R(abc). [...] With the exception of a few stomachs collected from grey seals from the Magdalen Islands in the early 1990s, Information is lacking on prey consumed by grey seals in the central or northern portion of NAFO zone 4T , around the regions of Gaspe and the Magdalen Islands, an area where cod are known to be more abundant. [...] Lawrence overwinter are limited and our estimates are based on assumptions concerning changes in population size and the component of 4T cod in the diet consumed in 4VN. [...] This sample likely underestimates cod consumption because cod leave the Gulf during the winter when sampling of seals in both the Estuary and the Magdalen Island area occurred. [...] The assessment of competition between seals and commercial fisheries in the North Sea and the Antarctic.

Book The Norwegian Coastal Current

Download or read book The Norwegian Coastal Current written by and published by Fagbokforlaget. This book was released on 2007 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Norwegian coastal current originates primarily from the freshwater outflow from the Baltic and the freshwater runoff from Norway. It flows northwards along the coast of Norway as a low-salinity current. This coastal region is the spawning ground for a number of important oceanic fish stocks, and the physical environment has an impact on the recruitment, growth, and geographical distribution of these stocks. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Institute of Marine Research in Norway established a coastal oceanographic observation system. This continued to evolve, and its core elements are still in operation. Drawing on the results generated by this observation system, as well as by other coastal studies, this book reviews the current understanding of the physical/chemical conditions in the Norwegian coastal current in such a way as to make the material more easily accessible to non-specialists. A series of chapters introduces readers to the geography, currents, water masses, and the temporal and spatial variability of the Norwegian coastal current. Interannual fluctuations in physical conditions are most likely to be the prime cause of ecosystem variability. The editor hopes that this book will act as a point of departure for a future summary of the ecology of Norwegian coastal waters.

Book excerpt: The oil spill disaster that occurred when the Exxon Valdez ran aground has become part of the iconography of ecological disaster. This book synthesizes confidential data, recently released by the US government, concerning the effects of this spill on marine mammals (ie. sea otters, harbour seals, killer whales and humpback whales). Many of the contributors were on site within 24 hours of the spill and their results establish a baseline worst case scenario. These data should assist marine biologists, pathologists, toxicologists, environmentatlists, engineers, and coastal planners in assessing the nature of this disaster.
