Book History heritage and colonialism

Download or read book History heritage and colonialism written by Kynan Gentry and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History, heritage, and colonialism explores the politics of history-making and interest in preserving the material remnants of the past in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century colonial society, looking at both indigenous pasts and those of European origin. Focusing on New Zealand, but also covering the Australian and Canadian experiences, it explores how different groups and political interests have sought to harness historical narrative in support of competing visions of identity and memory. Considering this within the frames of the local and national as well as of empire, the book offers a valuable critique of the study of colonial identity-making and cultures of colonisation. This book offers important insights for societies negotiating the legacy of a colonial past in a global present, and will be of particular value to all those concerned with museum, heritage, and tourism studies, as well as imperial history.

Book United States Code

    Book Details:
  • Author : United States
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 974 pages

Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 974 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Book Examining a New Paradigm of Heritage With Philosophy Economy and Education

Download or read book Examining a New Paradigm of Heritage With Philosophy Economy and Education written by Queirós, António dos Santos and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-06-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OECD, UNESCO, the European Union, and the United Nations acknowledge that formal educational systems alone cannot respond to rapid and constant technological, social, and economic change in society and that they should be reinforced by non-formal educational practices. Examining a New Paradigm of Heritage With Philosophy, Economy, and Education is a critical scholarly publication that provides comprehensive research on the sustainability of identity and cultural heritage. The book establishes uniform and consistent conceptual criteria to identify and distinguish the different typological categories of heritage and discusses the concept of “cultural landscape” and environmental ethics. Moreover, connections between cultural heritage and natural heritage and the economy of heritage are explored. Finally, the book discusses cultural landscape as an educational resource with reading and interpretation of the cultural landscape as a basis for learning with a methodology of experimental science and its first metamorphosis of value. Featuring a range of topics such as curriculum design, ethics, and environmental tourism, this book is ideal for academicians, sociologists, biologists, researchers, policymakers, and students.

Book Authorized Heritage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Coutts
  • Publisher : Univ. of Manitoba Press
  • Release : 2021-03-19
  • ISBN : 088755928X
  • Pages : 319 pages

Download or read book Authorized Heritage written by Robert Coutts and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Authorized Heritage" analyses the history of commemoration at heritage sites across western Canada. Using extensive research from predominantly government records, it argues that heritage narratives are almost always based on national messages that commonly reflect colonial perceptions of the past. Yet many of the places that commemorate Indigenous, fur trade, and settler histories are contested spaces, places such as Batoche, Seven Oaks, and Upper Fort Garry being the most obvious. At these heritage sites, Indigenous views of history confront the conventions of settler colonial pasts and represent the fluid cultural perspectives that should define the shifting ground of heritage space. Robert Coutts brings his many years of experience as a public historian to this detailed examination of heritage sites across the prairies. He shows how the process of commemoration often reflects social and cultural perspectives that privilege a conventional and conservative national narrative. He also examines how class, gender, and sexuality often remain apart from the heritage discourse. Most notably, Authorized Heritage examines how governments became the mediators of what is heritage and, just as significantly, what is not.
