Book Front of Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols

Download or read book Front of Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Download or read book Nutrition Essentials Easy to Use Guide for Beginners written by Kenzie Macbeth and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-11-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nutrition Essentials Easy to Use Guide for Beginners Nutrition is a fundamental aspect of human existence, playing a pivotal role in shaping our health, well-being, and quality of life. It is not merely a matter of consuming food for survival; rather, it is the cornerstone of our physical, mental, and emotional development. Nutrition is the science that explores the relationship between the food we eat and its impact on our bodies. Nutrition is akin to the fuel that powers a vehicle. Just as a car requires gasoline to move, our bodies need nutrients from food to function optimally. These nutrients are the building blocks of our cells, tissues, and organs, providing the energy and materials necessary for growth, repair, and maintenance. Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals are the essential components of this biological fuel. A well-balanced and nutritious diet is a shield against numerous chronic and acute diseases. Poor nutrition can lead to malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and many other health problems. By making informed dietary choices, we can significantly reduce the risk of such conditions and enhance our overall health. Nutrition has a profound impact on our cognitive function. What we eat can affect our memory, concentration, and overall brain health. For example, omega-3 fatty acids found in certain foods, like fatty fish, have been linked to improved cognitive function and reduced risk of cognitive decline in older adults. Nutrition is of utmost importance, particularly in the early stages of life. Proper nutrition during pregnancy ensures the health and well-being of both the mother and the developing fetus. In childhood and adolescence, adequate nutrition is essential for normal growth and development, including bone health and the establishment of healthy eating habits.
