Book excerpt: What should you do if someone throws melons at you? How does your immune system keep you alive when attacked by a brand new invader? Why might arriving late to a jazz festival be a good thing? What happens when a carrot turns into a rabbit? If you are a manager or leader in an organization - company, public service, or NGO - or you are simply interested in how to make your organization work better, then this book is for you. If you have the feeling that you are skating over the surface of what is really going on in your organization, if you know that there is something more vital that you are missing out on, if you're frustrated by applying the same management fads over and over, just with different labels on, then perhaps you are open to looking deeper into what makes organizations function, fail, and flourish. This book will walk you through these questions and more. But instead of giving you answers and prescriptions, Essential Balances guides you through a whole new way of seeing, thinking, and being. You will see how to turn this into new habits, discover fundamental principles, and be able to see and influence the three Essential Balances: Autonomy and CohesionStability and DiversityExploration and ExploitationAutonomy and Cohesion - Can you have freedom but keep everything working together at the same time? The rabbit is independent, not stuck to the ground, but what are the limits to its freedom? And now free, is it better off than the carrot it once was? Stability and Diversity - Is difference and divergence at odds with a stable organization? How would you know? What can we learn from our immune systems about dealing with uncertainty? Exploration and Exploitation - Should you go out and find new clients, new markets, or new opportunities or would it be better to wring the most out of where you are, what you have, and what you currently do? If you arrive late for a jazz festival and run into the first hall you come to, might you discover a new act that you love, but never would have picked from the programme? These balances apply at all levels: personal, organizational, and societal. The habits to monitor, maintain and adjust them start with noticing that they pervade everything we do. Then we must learn not just to balance ourselves and our organizations, but also to balance the use of the balances. When we explore this and embrace the paradoxes of organizations and discover that it is those very paradoxes that make organizations vital and alive, we start to realise that it is dynamic balance - constant adjusting, noticing, shifting. So if you want to cast off the weight of management fads and fashions and glimpse wisdom that will change the way you notice the essence of everything, then get Essential Balances today. Book Work Life Balance Essential or Ephemeral

Download or read book Work Life Balance Essential or Ephemeral written by Andreas Schwingshackl and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-09-28 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burn-out and suicide rates among physicians and scientists in academic medicine are at an all-time high and jeopardize the future of our entire profession. In the last 4 years alone, burn-out rates among physicians have increased by 25%. In a recent 2017 Medscape publication, burn-out rates in Critical Care physicians ranked in 9th place and Pediatricians ranked 13th among 27 subspecialties. Astonishingly, over 50% of the participants reported burn-out symptoms, with clear race and gender disparities. While men generally report higher burn-out rates than women, it is important to emphasize that response rates from women in these surveys were notoriously low and may not represent the complete picture. These numbers are even more dismal for tenured academic faculty at research-extensive universities. In this group, emotional exhaustion (i.e. high burn-out) is reported at 35% with a clear association with age and lower burn-out levels in the older tenured faculty. While no gender or racial/ethnic differences were found in this particular group, higher levels of burn-out were identified in individuals with financial responsibilities beyond a spouse and child. While it is comforting to note the increasing public interest and research activities in this field, successful approaches to ameliorate the burden and consequences of physician burn-out are still inadequately developed. Academic centers increasingly offer some type of work-life balance program to their employees but, unfortunately, these programs are frequently adopted from corporate business models and remain largely ineffective in the academic environment. It should be evident to most administrators that the stressors of academic clinicians and scientists substantially differ from those of corporate employees. Based on these observations and over 75 years of combined experience in academic medicine amongst the three editors of this Research Topic, we collected 26 manuscripts from 22 authors at different career stages and different genders, ethnicities, marital status and subspecialties to identify and stratify common and specific stressors and therapeutic approaches to ameliorate burn-out and achieve work-life balance in academic medicine. We are confident that each reader will identify with at least one, if not several, of the authors’ opinions, experiences and approaches to attain greater work-life balance and thereby avoid the consequences of burn-out in modern academic medicine.

Book 10 Essential Foods

Download or read book 10 Essential Foods written by Lalitha Thomas and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well-balanced, nutritious foods are an important focus for healthy lifestyles. Thomas has narrowed her focus to 10 essential foods for optimal health and well-being. She lists them early in her book and discusses each food's reason for being a part of the list. Each food listed is significant in its ability to provide healthy dosages of either beta carotene, essential amino acids, disease-preventing phytochemicals, calcium, and vitamin B-12, among others. Thomas' writing is factual and straightforward, with a touch of humor to make the book more palatable. She provides a wealth of information on each of her chosen ten essential foods, and then provides an additional chapter on meat, poultry, and dairy. While her focus is primarily on a vegetarian lifestyle, she does give healthy possibilities for those still desiring to include these foods as part of their diet. Two other positive additions to each chapter include a "Lalitha Rants" section where she shares stories in an exasperated nature about health concerns she feels are either misdiagnosed or misinformed to the general public. Much can be learned from her tirades! Also, each chapter includes kid-friendly recipes so that children can incorporate healthy eating habits at a young age. Finally, a useful bibliography lists relevant sources quoted in the book and gives suggestions for other helpful cookbooks and resources. Medical clinics, supplies, recommended products, health accessories, ten essential snacks, and survival choice listings are also listed, making this book thorough and highly informative. Much talk about the importance of organic vegetables and fruits is discussed. This is a follow-up to 10 Essential Herbs, also regarded by many as a valid guidebook for health.
