Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for architects, designers, and anyone involved in planning and designing assisted living facilities, The Essence of Home offers a fresh look at an area of design that is becoming increasingly important as the elderly population continues to grow exponentially. Through in-depth interviews with residents, staff, administrators, and family members, as well as an exhaustive review of architectural and medical literature, auther William Brummett has identified what it takes to make a facility feel like "home." It is not enough to merely add cosmetic or decorative touches to the typical hospital or nursing home structure; rather, the facility must be designed specifically with a sense of home in mind, taking into account not only the physical capabilities and limitations of the residents, but the emotional and psychological needs as well. The Essence of Home looks at 38 significant problem-solving design considerations, and contains two in-depth case studies. Detailed illustrations and graphics provide a visual sense of the concepts discussed in the text. An annotated bibliography and comprehensive list of references provide additional sources of information.

Book excerpt: “With lush photographs and spare prose” a Brooklyn blogger shares recipes and “records her life as a gardener, a cook and an urban forager.” (The New York Times) Marie Viljoen's beautiful first book draws the reader into a world of unfolding seasons, seen from the perspective of an expert gardener, cook and photographer. Each chapter is a month, divided into three parts: New York City, the author's garden, and her kitchen, each setting the stage for a lavish seasonal menu with recipes drawn from farmers markets, wild-foraged ingredients, and produce grown on her city terrace and roof farm. Named for the size of her tiny Brooklyn terrace, and the blog it inspired, Viljoen's book is a unique perspective of the concrete jungle, where the month is known by the flowers in bloom, the vegetable in season, and the migrating birds crossing a Brooklyn sky. Set against a backdrop of growing up in South Africa and moving to the United States, meeting her French husband, and finding a culinary and emotional home in Brooklyn, Viljoen's book is a love letter to living seasonally in the most famous city on the planet. “If you don't think of this city as a living ecosystem, Marie Viljoen will change your perspective forever.” —Edible Brooklyn “Offer[s] visions of growing, cooking and sharing fresh food as central to living a good life.” —Seattle Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Nominated for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work Named a Best Book of the Year by The Root Chosen by Emma Straub as a Best New Celebrity Memoir “A book of essays as raw and honest as anyone has ever produced.” — Lena Dunham, Lenny Letter In the spirit of Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl, and Roxane Gay's Bad Feminist, a powerful collection of essays about gender, sexuality, race, beauty, Hollywood, and what it means to be a modern woman. One month before the release of the highly anticipated film The Birth of a Nation, actress Gabrielle Union shook the world with a vulnerable and impassioned editorial in which she urged our society to have compassion for victims of sexual violence. In the wake of rape allegations made against director and actor Nate Parker, Union—a forty-four-year-old actress who launched her career with roles in iconic ’90s movies—instantly became the insightful, outspoken actress that Hollywood has been desperately awaiting. With honesty and heartbreaking wisdom, she revealed her own trauma as a victim of sexual assault: "It is for you that I am speaking. This is real. We are real." In this moving collection of thought provoking essays infused with her unique wisdom and deep humor, Union uses that same fearlessness to tell astonishingly personal and true stories about power, color, gender, feminism, and fame. Union tackles a range of experiences, including bullying, beauty standards, and competition between women in Hollywood, growing up in white California suburbia and then spending summers with her black relatives in Nebraska, coping with crushes, puberty, and the divorce of her parents. Genuine and perceptive, Union bravely lays herself bare, uncovering a complex and courageous life of self-doubt and self-discovery with incredible poise and brutal honesty. Throughout, she compels us to be ethical and empathetic, and reminds us of the importance of confidence, self-awareness, and the power of sharing truth, laughter, and support.

Download or read book The Essence of Living written by Robert A. Giacalone and published by Thinkable Press. This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the meaning of life? Why do I feel unfulfilled and unhappy? How can I successfully build a joyous, meaningful life? The Essence of Living examines these questions through three stories that serve as metaphors leading to a simple, life-altering truth: Joy and meaning are achieved by living a different story than we were taught. Living in our spiritual amnesia, we forgot where we came from and lost faith in the worthiness of our lives. The Essence of Living helps us question ideas that lead us to lives of struggle, and replace them with approaches that bring joy and meaning. Robert A. Giacalone, Ph.D. is the Daniels Distinguished Chair in Business Ethics at the University of Denver. He is the author/editor of nine books in business psychology, spirituality, and ethics. His work has been cited in a variety of sources, including the Christian Science Monitor, Time, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, and U.S. News and World Report. Book Lord I m Coming Home

Download or read book Lord I m Coming Home written by John Forrest and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord I'm Coming Home focuses on a small, white, rural fishing community on the southern reaches of the Great Dismal Swamp in North Carolina. By means of a new kind of anthropological fieldwork, John Forrest seeks to document the entire aesthetic experience of a group of people, showing the aesthetic to be an "everyday experience and not some rarefied and pure behavior reserved for an artistic elite." The opening chapter of the book is a vivid fictional narrative of a typical day in "Tidewater," presented from the perspective of one fisherman. In the following two chapters the author sets forth the philosophical and anthropological foundations of his book, paying particular attention to problems of defining "aesthetic," to methodological concerns, and to the natural landscape of his field site. Reviewing his own experience as both participant and observer, he then describes in scrupulous detail the aesthetic forms in four areas of Tidewater life: home, work, church, and leisure. People use these forms, Forrest shows, to establish personal and group identities, facilitate certain kinds of interactions while inhibiting others, and cue appropriate behavior. His concluding chapter deals with the different life cycles of men and women, insider-outsider relations, secular and sacred domains, the image and metaphor of "home," and the essential role that aesthetics plays in these spheres. The first ethnography to evoke the full aesthetic life of a community, Lord I'm Coming Home will be important reading not only for anthropologists but also for scholars and students in the fields of American studies, art, folklore, and sociology.
