Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Essays Towards a Critical Method Of the following essays those on Poe Shelley Clough, and the art of Keats and Burns were written before the idea of a general "Critical Method" had been at all formally developed by the author. Each was a spontaneous attempt, made over ten years ago, to arrive by comparison and inference at a reasoned opinion on a critical issue over which there had been much dispute; and they are now revised and collected in the hope that, though in the past ten years our critical disputes have mostly turned on other topics, these discussions may still have an interest for readers who have not yet satisfied themselves that the old questions are disposed of. The principles involved are a permanent ground of discussion, and doubtless the poets of the past will yet be disputed over afresh. It will readily be seen that no one of the studies named, except perhaps that on Poe, comes near applying all the tests mentioned in the preliminary essay on The Theory and Practice of Criticism as proper to a critical inquiry. They rather represent detached investigations in which a view of the nature of the necessary tests is arrived at. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Towards a Critical Method OF the following papers, that on Science in Criticism was the last written so that the others, though selected from a number, are not presented as studied applications of the method or methods of judgment laid down in the introductory treatise. I trust there will be found, however, a substantial conformity between the critical essays and the general exposition, inasmuch as the former were made under the convictions and in part with the aims which led to the attempt at a com prehensive treatment of the art or science - whichever it be termed - of literary criticism. Book excerpt: This volume tackles the complex terrain of theory and methods, seeking to exemplify the major philosophical, social-theoretic and methodological developments - some with clear political and ethical implications - that have traversed human geography since the era of the 1960s when spatial science came to the fore. Coverage includes Marxist and humanistic geographies, and their many variations over the years, as well as ongoing debates about agency-structure and the concepts of time, space, place and scale. Feminist and other 'positioned' geographies, alongside poststructuralist and posthumanist geographies, are all evidenced, as well as writings that push against the very 'limits' of what human geography has embraced over these fifty plus years. The volume combines readings that are well-known and widely accepted as 'classic', with readings that, while less familiar, are valuable in how they illustrate different possibilities for theory and method within the discipline. The volume also includes a substantial introduction by the editor, contextualising the readings, and in the process providing a new interpretation of the last half-century of change within the thoughts and practices of human geography.
