At a period little accessible to history, when the Slavonic tribes flooded the plains of Eastern Europe and spread from the Black Sea and the Adriatic to the Baltic and the Arctic Ocean, hordes of Tartars poured in rapid succession from the regions abandoned by the Sarmates and forced this nomadic tribe to become a warlike people.
