Book Saint Basil and Greek Literature A Dissertation

Download or read book Saint Basil and Greek Literature A Dissertation written by Leo V. Jacks A.M. and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this dissertation is to investigate. Basil’s knowledge of Greek literature, and to acquire as far as possible an insight into his attitude toward it. It is hoped that this object will be attained by collecting all direct quotations, all proper names, and all expressions and ideas which may with some degree of real certainty be attributed to the Greek civilization before him. This dissertation is not a study of sources, as such studies are generally understood. The common type of source investigation is an accumulation of every word, phrase, or idea which has even the remotest possibility of indicating a point of contact between two authors. By far the greater part of such material indicates little or nothing of certainty regarding a writer’s use of the works of a predecessor. To repeat, the present study has to do only with certain or nearly certain signs of an acquaintance with, or an attitude of mind toward, the earlier Greek culture. These considerations must be borne in mind, especially in the study of the philosophers (Chapter III) to whom Basil is commonly supposed to be greatly indebted. Aeterna Press

Book The Poets and the Fathers

Download or read book The Poets and the Fathers written by Timothy E. G. Bartel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian poetry was born at the crossroads of the Greek, Hebrew, Roman, and Syrian cultures of late antiquity. Pioneered by poets like Ephrem the Syrian, Gregory Nazianzus, and Prudentius, a uniquely Christian poetry—and poetics—has flourished across history into the twenty-first century. In this series of essays, poet and literary scholar Timothy E. G. Bartel explores the often-overlooked genesis of Christian poetry in the fourth century AD, with a special emphasis on the poetics and cultural-theological vision of St. Gregory Nazianzus. Bartel then traces the influence of the inventors of Christian poetry to poets of more recent centuries, including Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, T. S. Eliot, C. S. Lewis, and Scott Cairns. It is in these poets of the last three centuries that we see the continual outworking of the ancient Christian poetic project and a blueprint for the future of a literature that continues to learn from the church fathers and the theological traditions of Christianity.
