Book Essays on the Political Economy of the Environment

Download or read book Essays on the Political Economy of the Environment written by Luke Coyne Sanford and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to study environmental politics is like trying to juggle flaming bowling pins while riding a unicycle--it requires the acrobat to be good enough at both juggling (political science) and unicycle riding (environmental science) that they do not immediately crash and burn. My attempt to do so is below. In my dissertation I take three different approaches to answering questions which can contribute to our understanding of the interface between the political forces and the environment. In the first I explore electoral deforestation cycles, where deforestation rates are higher surrounding elections in young democracies. These cycles are most pronounced when the elections are highly competitive, occur in young or weakly institutionalized democracies, and are held in majoritarian systems where politicians can effectively target voters with geographic policies. Here, a set of rules designed to expand political power have the unintended consequence of increased environmental destruction. In the second paper we develop a method for discovering and testing influential concepts and phrases in text. We adapt a neural network with recurrent and convolutional layers designed to make the network's decisions more interpretable to a different task--to identify phrases and concepts which are highly persuasive to a reader. We then apply this to climate change communication to try to uncover some of the most persuasive concepts both for and against climate change mitigation. In it I evaluate the effects of receiving a formal land title on the behavior of plot owners--usually smallholder farmers--using satellite imagery and machine learning. This case speaks to a substantive question that drives millions of dollars in aid annually--how can we reduce barriers to increasing productivity for the world's poorest and least food secure regions. It also demonstrates new methods which use existing data to more effectively evaluate future (or past!) interventions. Specifically, I evaluate whether having the boundaries of one's plot officially demarcated and recorded and the ability to obtain a legal title increase the probability that part of the plot will be converted from annual to perennial crops, whether there will be cropland expansion in the plot, and whether the built-up area in these plots increases. I also test whether land titling results in land-sparing in surrounding areas by increasing productivity on the intensive margin. To do this I develop a set of methods for using satellite imagery to measure changes in land cover based on sub-annual variations in surface reflectance of different wavelengths of light. This allows me to observe outcomes at an annual scale and detect the proportion of plots under different types of landcover. Evidence from a pilot area of analysis shows increased conversion from natural forest to cropland as a result of land formalization.

Book Institutions and Sustainability

Download or read book Institutions and Sustainability written by Volker Beckmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-07 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first vague idea to use Konrad Hagedorn’s 60th birthday as an inspi- tion for taking stock of his vibrant academic contributions, this joint book project has been a great pleasure for us in many ways. Pursuing Hagedorn’s intellectual development, we have tried to reflect on the core questions of humanity according to Ernst Bloch “Who are we?”, “Where do we come from?” and “Where are we heading?” In this way, and without knowing it, Konrad Hagedorn initiated a c- lective action process he would have very much enjoyed ... if he had been allowed to take part in it. But it was our aim and constant motivation to surprise him with this collection of essays in his honour. Konrad Hagedorn was reared as the youngest child of a peasant family on a small farm in the remote moorland of East Frisia, Germany. During his childhood in the poverty-ridden years after the Second World War, he faced a life where humans were heavily dependent on using nature around them for their livelihoods; meanwhile, he learned about the fragility of the environment. As a boy, he - tended a one-room schoolhouse, where his great intellectual talents were first r- ognised and used for co-teaching his schoolmates. These early teaching expe- ences might have laid the foundations for his later becoming a dedicated lecturer and mentor.

Book Economics the Environment and Our Common Wealth

Download or read book Economics the Environment and Our Common Wealth written by James K. Boyce and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If youre interested in the cutting-edge of the very best thinking on economics and the environment, its right here. Boyce has done a masterful job integrating issues of equity and ecological thinking into economics, and presenting deep and important ideas accessibly with the latest research to back them up. Not just recommended, but essential. Juliet Schor, Boston College, US and author of True Wealth: How and Why Millions of Americans are Creating a Time-rich, Ecologically-light, Small-scale, High-satisfaction Economy A colleague of mine puts it best: when thinking about the fundamentals of the economy and the environment, there is Pigou, Coase, and Boyce. Boyce adds to traditional economics the critical understanding that social power is a determinant of the extent and spatial scale of environmental degradation. In these essays, on subjects ranging from housing and credit markets to agriculture and globalization, Boyce mixes a data-driven picture of unequal environmental protection with a keen and useful discussion of the many forms of social power that can help right the scales. Eban Goodstein, Bard College, US This fascinating volume has at its heart a simple but powerful premise: that a clean and safe environment is not a commodity to be allocated on the basis of purchasing power, nor a privilege to be allocated through political power, but rather a basic human right. Building upon this premise, James K. Boyce explores the many ways in which economics can be refashioned into an instrument for advancing human well-being and environmental health. Comprising a decades worth of essays written since the publication of the authors pathbreaking book, The Political Economy of the Environment (2002), this volume discusses a number of diverse environmental issues through an economists lens. Topics covered include environmental justice, disaster response, globalization and the environment, industrial toxins and other pollutants, cap-and-dividend climate policies, and agricultural biodiversity. The first economics book to explore the idea that the environment belongs in equal measure to us all, this pioneering volume will hold great interest for students, professors and researchers of both economics and environmental studies.

Book The Political Economy of Environment and Development in a Globalised World

Download or read book The Political Economy of Environment and Development in a Globalised World written by Darley Jose Kjosavik and published by Akademika Pub. This book was released on 2011 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critical exploration of the theoretical and thematic frontiers of environment and development studies in the context of globalisation. The edited volume offers important theoretical interdisciplinary perspectives and insights on the political economy of environment and development. The theoretical frontiers in environment and development studies focusing on concepts and theories in relation to sustainable development, social justice, capabilities, freedom, scarcity, progress, post-development and environment, and environmental governance are explored. The book offers an exposition of resource appropriation in the emerging global political economy that draws on primary and secondary material from different geographical areas. The main message in this volume is that the globalised governance regime led by the North sets the twin agenda of development and environmental management ignoring the contradictory nature of the two, as the nature/environment of the South are increasingly available to the North to subsidise development and manage environment in the North. The book also extends this analysis to the globalised nature of peace and development in national states and presents experiences from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. The liberal peace-building project located within the globalised regime, has contributed to new conflicts over resources and power in the South, as the resource itself is subject to the increasing demands of global, particularly corporate, capital. The book is a call to academia, policy makers and activists to pay serious attention to these contradictions in the theories, policies and practices of development. The book is in honour of Nadarajah Shanmugaratnam, and draws on his work on the 'contradiction-interdependence dialectic' relation between capital and nature/environment.

Book Environmental Politics in the Middle East

Download or read book Environmental Politics in the Middle East written by Harry Verhoeven and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018-11 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates how ecology and politics meet in the Middle East and how those interactions connect to the global political economy. Through region-wide analyses and case studies from the Arabian Peninsula, the Gulf of Aden, the Levant and North Africa, the volume highlights the intimate connections of environmental activism, energy infrastructure and illicit commodity trading with the political economies of Central Asia, the Horn of Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The book's nine chapters analyze how the exploitation and representation of the environment have shaped the history of the region--and determined its place in global politics. It argues that how the ecological is understood, instrumentalized and intervened upon is the product of political struggle: deconstructing ideas and practices of environmental change means unravelling claims of authority and legitimacy. This is particularly important in a region frequently seen through the prism of environmental determinism, where ruling elites have imposed authoritarian control as the corollary of 'environmental crisis'. This unique and urgent collection will question much of what we think we know about this pressing issue.

Book Climate Change and Common Sense

Download or read book Climate Change and Common Sense written by Robert W. Hahn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread agreement that climate change is a serious problem. If we fail to regulate greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, or use alternative strategies for addressing the problem, the damages could be significant, and perhaps catastrophic. After several international meetings in which nation-states have tried unsuccessfully to address the climate change problem, there is a sense of frustration and urgency: frustration at the slow pace at which countries are moving toward an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; urgency because of the growing evidence that climate change is a serious problem that should be addressed globally and quickly. This book takes a close look at the fundamental political and economic processes driving climate change policy. It identifies institutional arrangements and policies that are needed to design more effective climate change policy. It also examines ethical and distributional arguments that are critical in understanding and framing the climate debate. The book is built around a conference honouring Tom Schelling that took place at the Sustainable Consumption Institute at The University of Manchester. Each chapter represents a significant contribution to the literature on the political economy of climate change.

Book Three Essays on the Political Economy of the Environment

Download or read book Three Essays on the Political Economy of the Environment written by An Li and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I focus on environmental justice in China and global environmental justice. In Chapter 2 and 3, I focus on defining the environmental justice issue in China and exploring factors that could explain it. In Chapter 4, I focus on global environmental justice and explore the pollution outsourcing hypothesis. Chapter 2 examines the existing Chinese environmental justice literature and presents a framework for defining and examining the environmental justice issue in China using publicly available datasets. Using county-level data from the population census of 2010 and the information on the location of major industrial air polluting facilities, this Chapter shows that counties with a higher percentage of governmental officials and enterprise owners and managers tend to have less polluting facilities. The paper does not find evidence that the ethnic minorities and rural-to-urban migrants in China are exposed to more air pollution sources. Chapter 3 focuses on the environmental injustice faced by the rural-to-urban migrants in Chinese cities. Using data from the population census of 2000 and 2010 and a unique dataset showing the location and year of establishment of more than 200 major industrial pollution sources in China's Yangtze River Delta, the econometric analysis shows that while new facilities do not disproportionately locate in counties where migrants make up a higher percentage of local population, migrants do tend to move to counties where polluting facilities are geographically denser. For mitigating the impact of air pollution on the migrant population, it's necessary to strengthen industrial air pollution regulation, and improve migrants' income and their access to health care. Chapter 4 examines the pollution outsourcing hypothesis using the World Input-Output Data from 30 countries and 10 manufacturing industries between 1996 and 2007. After constructing two measurements of production fragmentation and outsourcing and two measurements of within-industry cross-country differences in the stringency of regulation on six types of air pollutants, the regression results show that manufacturing industries outsource more to countries with relatively less stringent regulations; and outsourcing helps in lowering the industries' domestic emission intensities. The effects are significant for multiple types of major globally and locally harmful air emissions.

Book Chicano Culture Ecology Politics

Download or read book Chicano Culture Ecology Politics written by Devon Gerardo Pena and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, mainstream American environmentalism has been a predominantly white, middle-class movement, essentially ignoring the class, race, and gender dimensions of environmental politics. In this provocative collection of original essays, the environmental dimensions of the Chicana/o experience are explicitly expressed and debated. Employing a variety of genres ranging from poetry to autobiography to theoretical and empirical essays, the voices in this collection speak to the most significant issues of environmentalism and social justice, recognizing throughout the need for a pluralism of Chicana/o philosophies. The contributors provide an excellent basis for understanding how multiple Chicana/o views on the environment play out in the context of dominant social, political and economic views. Chicano Culture, Ecology, Politics examines a number of Chicana/o ecological perspectives. How can the ethics of reciprocity present in Chicana/o agropastoral life be protected and applied on a broader scale? How can the dominant society, whose economic structure is invested in "placeless mobility," take note of the harm caused to land-based cultures, take responsibility for it, and take heed before it is too late? Will the larger society be "ecologically housebroken" before it destroys its home? Grounded in actual political struggles waged by Chicana/o communities over issues of environmental destruction, cultural genocide, and socioeconomic domination, this volume provides an important series of snapshots of Chicana/o history. Chicano Culture, Ecology, Politics illuminates the bridges that existÑand must be understoodÑbetween race, ethnicity, class, gender, politics, and ecology.
