Book Essays on Strategy Analysis for Seaports

Download or read book Essays on Strategy Analysis for Seaports written by Elvira Haezendonck and published by Garant. This book was released on 2001 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasingly competitive market environment, in which port clusters operate today, imposes new requirements on port strategy analysis. Many port authorities and port operators now realize that a static approach to cost leadership, a sole focus on inherited factor advantages and a simplistic reliance on new infrastructure to attract or retain clients, are no longer sufficient to guarantee a port's competitive success. They need to offer greater value added to port users, as well as to society. Hence, this new market environment forces ports to reconsider their present strategic position and to reflect on the strategic options for the future. The book builds upon an in-depth survey of economic actors in the Antwerp seaport cluster, with a specific focus on the container and conventional cargo clusters. It attempts to answer the question why these particular port clusters arc more competitive than similar clusters in other ports. In order to answer this question, the study develops and extends a number of formal tools of strategy analysis that should be useful to both port authorities and port operators.

Book Port Economics

Download or read book Port Economics written by Wayne K. Talley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Port Economics is the study of the economic decisions (and their consequences) of the users and providers of port services. A port is an "engine" for economic development by providing employment, worker incomes, business earnings and taxes for its region. The book provides a detailed discussion of types of carriers that use ports, the operation of cargo and passenger ports as well as the operation of such specific ports as Hong Kong, Hamburg, Le Havre, Savannah, Miami and Panama. Port Economics is the first contemporary textbook of its kind. It enhances our understanding of port economics by – classifying port users and suppliers of port services in the context of economic demand and supply curves; denoting that the demand for port services has two prices, the price paid to the port by the users and the price (or actual and opportunity costs) incurred by port user carriers, shippers and passengers; presenting the economic theories of carriers, shippers and passengers. The numerous up-to-date references will be of benefit to students and researchers of the economics of the shipping trade; to government officials in developing port and shipping policies; and to port operators in understanding the port-choice selection process by shipping lines and other carriers.
