This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1992 a conference honoring Elwood S. Buffa was held at the Anderson Graduate School of Management of the University of California, Los Angeles. This book is a collection of the work presented at that conference. The scholars who gathered to honor El are the prominent researchers in the field of Operations Management. Their collective work published in this book represents the richness of the field and provides the reader with valuable insights into its important issues and problems. While any grouping of the articles by these distinguished scholars will be arbitrary, I have organized the book in four sections. In the first section the articles dealing with the strategic issues in Operations Management are compiled. The articles deal with continuous improvement, quality, services, supply chain management, and creating value through operations. The articles that explore the interface of Operations Management with other functional areas, e.g. engineering and marketing, are grouped in the second section. The third section of the book contains articles that attempt to model some important planning problems that arise in the management of production and operations. Some of the papers in this section provide state of the art reviews of selected topic areas. Finally, the fourth section contains articles that deal with future directions for Operations Management. The authors offer several insights into the future evolution of the field. The book begins with the keynote address given by El Buffa at the start of the conference on November 2, 1991.

Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays. The first essay considers a learning problem for a mobile-promotion platform. The second essay studies the identification of bottlenecks of processes in the presence of collaboration and multitasking. The third essay considers an assortment planning problem faced by an online retailer. In Chapter 2, we consider a learning problem for a mobile-promotion platform which conducts advertising campaigns for individual advertisers and operates under both supply-side and demand-side uncertainties. The platform fulfills campaigns by procuring impressions from publishers. The relationship between the bid amount and the probability of winning an impression at that bid is initially unknown to the platform, and it learns them on the fly based on the bids placed and the realized outcomes. Each acquired impression is allocated to an ongoing campaign. We propose a bidding and allocation policy and show that our policy is asymptotically tight. In Chapter 3, we study the identification of bottlenecks of processes that involves collaboration and multitasking. Collaboration occurs when at least one activity of the process requires two or more resources simultaneously, and multitasking occurs when at least one resource is needed for two or more activities of the process. We formulate and analyze graph-theoretic optimization problems that determine bottleneck structures of activities and the associated bottleneck sets of resources in deterministic, single-product processes. In Chapter 4, we consider an assortment planning problem faced by an e-tailer. When shopping online, a consumer often searches using keywords, then examines the products displayed on the webpage as a result of the search. The set of products shown by the e-tailer may trigger her interest in a specific product feature, leading the consumer to refine her search and focus only on products with this feature. Taking this into consideration, we study the e-tailer’s optimal product display decision when consumers have the option to refine their search.

Supporting some recent industry observations, we show that under common pricing schemes, such as wholesale price or two-part tariff, downstream firms overinvest in demand forecasting. Analyzing the bounds and determinants of overinvestment, we demonstrate that the wholesale price and two-part tariff schemes can result in overinvestment up to twice the optimal level. As a result, the supply chain surplus can also suffer substantially as the wholesale price and two-part tariff schemes can result in nearly a full loss of supply chain efficiency. Further the losses with the best contracting scheme in the class of quadratic contracts, which also include the wholesale price and two-part tariff contracts, can amount to as much as half the first-best supply chain surplus. We propose a "market-based" contracting scheme that fully coordinates the supply chain in quantities and demand forecast investment, and demonstrate its desirable properties for implementability. Finally, we explore the role of observability of demand forecast investments, showing that in that case a uniform price auction is needed to fully coordinate the supply chain.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I investigate the role of monetary and non-monetary incentive plans on agentsdecisions in various business contexts. I focus on the effect of behavioral regularities, which arecommonly observed in individual behavior, on the performance of various incentive plans. In Chapter2, I study the impact of incentive plans on the decisions made by sales agents who have theauthority to set prices. I show that even when different incentive plans offer the same expectedcompensation, agents deviate from normative decisions in a systematic way in all plans, whichresults in differences in effectiveness of the plans for the firm. In Chapter 3, I incorporate varioustheories of consumer purchase and return behavior into a retailers decision-making framework, toidentify optimal sales incentives and refund policies. I find that when the firm can impose penaltieson both the salesforce and the consumers for product returns, the firm uses these penaltiesas either substitutes or complements under different market conditions. Finally, in Chapter 4, Istudy the effect of rank feedback and rank order contests on ordering decisions in a newsvendortask, a context where decision biases have been found to be persistent. I find that contests do notlead to improvements, but the sub-optimality in newsvendor orders is significantly reduced whenagents receive rank feedback. These findings suggest that social comparisons play a crucial role inorganizational decision-making.
