Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Individuality None of the essays printed in this volume were read at the symposium. They nevertheless clearly reveal not only the scope but also the high degree Of interlocking support and intellectual integration in the proceedings. The various papers had been prepared for advance distribution among the partici pants, each of whom introduced his subject briefly to the group, whose members then engaged in lengthy and lively round-table discussion. Notes on the points debated were kept, then read, amended, and approved at the close Of each session. Finally, these notes were amalgamated into a general sum mary report of the entire proceedings, prepared by Professor Arthur Kemp Of Claremont Men's College, who was Director of the Symposium and in that capacity responsible for its excellent arrangements. The writer of this Introduction served as chairman and was chosen as coordinating editor of this resultant volume. Professor Helmut Schoeck voluntarily con tributed both time and talent to compilation of the Index. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Superlative and Other Essays Finally the essay on Social Aims contains wise principles with which to enter upon the con scious membership of society. There comes a time, early or late, in every one's life, when individuality asserts itself strongly, and the three earlier essays reinforce, as Emerson mainly does in his writings, the consciousness of individual worth. But, at the same time, generally, one also becomes aware that he is a member of society, and not simply one of a family, and the doctrines taught in Social Aims are sound, stimulating, and corrective. Book The Limits of Individual Liberty

Download or read book The Limits of Individual Liberty written by Francis C. Montague and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Limits of Individual Liberty: An Essay Individual freedom and the function of the State have recently been topics of much controversy, not only among those who speculate upon politics, but among practical politicians in Parliament and in the newspapers. In these discussions all parties necessarily make many assumptions which require no small pains to define and verify. Every solution of a particular problem must imply general principles, and every general principle must have its place in a theory. A complete theory of individual liberty and the function of the State is a complete political philosophy; and a philosophy of politics involves a philosophy of things in general. The following essay does not pretend to be complete or to be philosophic. It merely aims at carrying political reflection one or two stages beyond the point reached by those whose sole interest is in party politics. It cannot assist the scientific inquirer; but it may interest some of those who like to criticize their own opinions. Such persons there are even in our own country; and if they find anything suggestive in this volume, it will have fulfilled the wishes of its author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Individualism: A Lecture Delivered at the John Street Institution, London, on the 16th of October, 1853 Trine of Individuality, System of Individualism, or Individuality of the Individual. That is my Gospel, my substitute for a dying or a dead Christianity; for perhaps it is as well that we should at once vote Chris tianity dead and have done with it. For this Gospel of mine I have published books and written essays and reviews and articles and preached and lectured and endeavoured in every way, always avoiding quackery and ostentation, to recommend it to the notice of the Public; but better than all I have endeavoured to live my gospel; and no one, I think, can say, however otherwise he might be disposed to condemn me, that I have ever deviated from the valiant and often troublous path of a persistent individuality. Like all men who set forth a new theory, I have had little to support me but my own enthusiasm, and have been seldom under stood, seldom felt except when I could pour myself as fiery emotion into the bosom of the People. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Self-Development, or the Unfolding of the Faculties Under Self-Culture: A Series of Essays, Addressed to Youths in College, and at Home There is to me no more interesting spectacle, than a youth on the threshold of a career - the future hopeful; with an unconscious yearning in his heart to have the world better for his living. He carefully overlooks that career, and feels that he must pursue it, so as to win the approval of good men, and the approbation of his conscience. Perhaps he stands alone, amid unfriendly sur roundings, without material aid; without an eye to mark him, or a voice to whisper, God speed thee! Perhaps his genial and attractive man ners have already surrounded him with friends, solicitous for his welfare; or perhaps, he may have ample material aid; and kin, very dear, who expect him to keep lustrous a family name. In one case or the other, natural parts so far transcend all environment as to difier only in individuality. But this contribution of Professor Thorndike's is significant for more than its incidental summary of known facts for it establishes a point of view and indicates a safe method of approach to this intricate study of human nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life as Reality: A Philosophical Essay Some years ago I was asked by a friend, while We were climbing old Kearsarge, to defend a system of idealism which gave full value to the will-strivings of our life-interests without degen erating into crude individualism. That reality could be defined in some such terms had been my thesis, - and it is the thesis of the present essay. This little incident occurred several years ago, but in the intervening time, while struggling to make myself clear, I have become the more convinced than ever that reality, for us human beings, is revealed directly through the impulses, the strivings, the purposes of our life and only indirectly through the vast world of objects and facts that pass in ceaseless stream before the eye of consciousness. It is in the effort and not at the goal that we must search for the real. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Both aim at rational and probable interpretations Of things. Whenever and however a theory seems fully to explain the facts, it must, in the absence of any other equally or more satis factory, be accepted provisionally by every mind which is able and willing to accept the point Of View of the theorist and to comprehend the force of his reasoning. One accepts an apparent subjective truth as certainly as he accepts an apparent objective truth. Most minds believe in both alike. Because this is necessarily a gradual process, and may not in the end give us more than an imperfectly determined belief, it does not therefore follow that we ought to abandon the pursuit of philosophic truth and content ourselves with science and its applications to practice, even when science is conceived in its widest sense.
