Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on History, Philosophy, and Theology, Vol. 2 In nearly all respects, the estimate of the character of Cromwell published twenty years since by Mr. Macaulay is fully as independent, honourable, and just, as. This now published by Mr. Carlyle. But in one respect we give the precedence greatly to Mr. Carlyle's portraiture. He does justice to the religion of Cromwell. His philosophy, Mr. Carlyle does not intend that his readers should think thus humbly of his labours on this point; but he must know that this is the fact of the case, inasmuch as the narrative in the above extract is given in nearly the same words, in the introduction to the Pell Papers, ' on the Times of the Protectorate, edited by the author of this article, and that work at least we must suppose Mr. Carlyle to have read, inasmuch as he quotes from it. And has disposed of it after his manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on History, Philosophy, and Theology, Vol. 1 of 2 On one subject - the influence of the Continental Phi losophy on Christianity, the author has expressed himself largely and freely. Still, he has only broken ground upon it. If his life be spared, he hopes to show more fully than could be done in a work of this nature, the folly of attempting to bring about any sincere harmony between Revealed Religion and the sort of Philosophy which has had its sway in Germany from the age of Kant to the death of Hegel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Philosophy and Theology The essays which follow are, as the title denotes, studies, which, from time to time, during the years of professional life, have engaged the writers attention, and occupied his most thoughtful hours. Many of them have been already published in the Bibliotheca Sacra, and elsewhere. The themes discussed are how ever, for the most part, of permanent interest; and as such, the discussions have a value as contributions to philosophical and theological science. For the con venience of many, especially my former pupils in Col lege and Seminary, these essays are now gathered into a volume, with such notes as seemed to be required. Book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Classic Reprint written by Friedrich Von Hugel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Addresses on the Philosophy of Religion Christian Church, for well over the first three centuries of her existence, left all the killing to her persecutors and herself per sisted and prevailed not by killing but by dying. Nevertheless, we shall do well, I think, not to deny that even the persecutions tolerated or encouraged by later Church authorities, have con tributed, in certain times and places, to the real consolidation of Christendom. And especially we shall be wise if we do not insist upon any sense, innate in all human hearts, of the essential heinousness of all persecution. And in Paper No. 4 I have attempted to show how the reality of Evil is beyond any direct explanation by anyone - the true state of affairs here is not that believers can explain and that unbelievers cannot explain, still less that Christians cannot explain but that sceptics can. No but that Christianity does, if something other, yet something more than explain Evil. Christianity has Immensely increased the range and depth of our insight as to Evil and, at the same time, Christianity alone has given man the motives and the power not only to trust on, unshaken, in the spiritual sun, in God, in spite of these sun spots of Evil, but to transform Evil into an instrument of Good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Views in Theology, Vol. 2 One of the most important objects at which a theological teacher should aim, is the acquisition of such views of religion and such a method of exhibiting them, as, from their harmony with each other and the dictates of common sense, are adapted to produce a strong conviction of their truth; such views as accord with fact, and such a presentation of them as to give them to bear on the conscience and heart with their natural and resistless force. Such was eminently the character of the ministry of the Son of God. All his doctrines, injunctions, exhortations, and warnings, were such, and were presented in such a manner, as to carry along with them a demonstration of their truth and propriety. His hearers recognised the accuracy of the pictures which he drew of their obligations and guiAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Philosophy of Religion Vol 2

Download or read book The Philosophy of Religion Vol 2 written by Otto Pfleiderer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion, Vol. 2: On the Basis of Its History From this point of View there arose new tasks for philosophy; the attempt had to be made to recognise in nature the unconscious shaping of mind, striving after consciousness and freedom through the various stages of organisation and on the other hand, to trace in the historical life of mind the process by which it extricates itself from its original entanglement in nature, and comes to itself; and then, further, how it again makes good its breach with nature, and restores its original unity with her in a higher form as its own free product. Thus we have the three principal parts of philosophy - the philo sophy of Nature, of History, and of Art and Religion. These are treated connectedly in the System of Transcendental Idealism which is the most complete of Schelling's writings. In this work the subject of religion is only briefly touched upon at the close of the History of Philosophy; but the suggestions thrown out are in teresting both in themselves and as the germs of thought put for ward at a later period, and we shall do well to notice them. Schelling's mind is already busy with the problem of liberty in its relation to the necessity, the law, and the purpose of the world order; to this problem he is already seeking a solution drawn from ultimate metaphysical principles. That the entirely lawless play of freedom, which every free being is playing for itself, as if no other being existed by its side, should yet issue in a result which is reasonable and connected - and that this is so, I am obliged to take for granted in every act I do - is a thing quite incomprehensible if it be not the case that the objective is in all acting something com mon, by which all the acts of men are guided to one harmonious end, so that, however they indulge their own caprices, they yet bring about, without and against their will, by a necessity which is hidden from their eyes, a development of the drama which they themselves were far from intending. This necessity can only be thought by an absolute synthesis of all the acts by which the whole of history unrolls itself, a synthesis in which all is estimated and calculated beforehand in such a way that, however contradictory and dishar monious it may appear, it yet has and finds in it its basis of unity. Such a synthesis or pre-established harmony of the subjective and the objective, the conscious and the unconscious, the free and the necessary, must have its ground in a Higher, which transcends both, which can be neither of the two, but only the absolute identity of both. The Eternal Unconscious is, on the one hand, the invisible root of all intelligences and the ground of the law-observance they exhibit in the midst of their freedom but itself cannot be denoted by any predicates taken from the world of intelligence and freedom, since it is the absolutely Simple, which for that reason can never be an object of knowledge, but only of presupposition in action, i.e. Of faith.
