Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Grace, Faith, and Experience, Wherein Several Gospel Truths Are Stated and Illustrated, and Their Opposite Errors Pointed Out: To Which Are Added, Some Interesting Extracts of Similar Subjects, Selected From Eminent Authors Pilate's question, What is Truth? Is not foreign to our purpose. He told his hearers that at last, af ter many researches, he had found it out, and hold ing outa New Testament, said that it was in his hand; but he put it in his pocket, and coldly added, 'the book is prohibited.' Whatdifi'erence would there have been bad he said, You may read the book, but its true meaning is prohibited? But what has been the consequence of introducing this ma thod of preventing hercsies and schisms? Plainly this (not to say any thin about extirpation), many have, as it were insensib y, been led to make tradi tion and church-authority their faith; and have thus become the dupes of superstition, while they have professed to be guided by the word of God! Yet since all spirits must be tried by the scriptures since all true church-authority must be founded there - and since if any man speak not according to the form of sound words recorded there, it is because there is no light in him, where can Christians appeal but to the scriptures? These, they are well assur ed, are able 'to make them wise unto salvation, through faith in Christ Jesus. 'all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; that the man of God may be per fect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.' The writer of the following pages might tell his reader of his connections with those who are reput ed orthodox; but as one justly observes, Ortho doxy, like almost all martial terms of controvertists, is a very vague, equivocal word - In its original and true import, it signifies a right belief; but, such is the fate oflanguage! In one latitude it means a belief of one thing, in another the belief of another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Fuller (1754-1815) was the leading Baptist theologian of his era, though his works are just now being made available in a critical edition. Strictures on Sandemanianism is the fourth volume in The Works of Andrew Fuller. In this treatise, Fuller critiqued Sandemanianism, a form of Restorationism that first emerged in Scotland in the eighteenth century and was influencing the Scotch Baptists of Fuller's day. Fuller's biggest concern was the Sandemanian belief that saving faith is merely intellectual assent to the gospel. Fuller believed this "intellectualist" view of faith undermined evangelical spirituality. Strictures on Sandemanianism became a leading evangelical critique of Sandemanian views. This critical edition will introduce scholars to this important work and shed light on evangelical debates about the faith, justification, and sanctification during the latter half of the "long" eighteenth century (ca. 1750 to 1815).
