This book covers a variety of topics, including competition, planner's capital, parametric solution and programming, economic system, and economic growth. Organized into 22 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the concepts of cooperation, conflict, exploitation, and competition in relation to economic system. This text then examines the status of economic planning in Great Britain and provides an analysis of the role of autonomous investment in the economy. Other chapters consider the monetary or financial aspects of the Soviet economy. This book discusses as well the aspects in which the planners have a social location and economic preferences different from those of the mass of citizens in the underdeveloped country. The final chapter deals with the problem of national development. This book is a valuable resource for economists, industrialists, economic planners, and academic socialists.

Book Economic Planning Studies

Download or read book Economic Planning Studies written by R. Frisch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is probably true, as the editor of these essays and studies by Ragnar Frisch points out, that the majority of economists are not well aware of the contributions made to their discipline by Frisch. This certainly does not apply, however, to econometricians. In fact, Frisch was one of the founding fathers of the Econometric Society and, for the first decade of its existence, its recognized leader in Europe. The annual European meetings were inspired by his enthusiasm, his unprecedented didactic talents and his amazingly diversified contributions. It is also clear that those members of the Swedish Academy of Sciences who selected candidates for the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science, were fully aware of Ragnar Frisch's pathbreaking work when they decided to award him that famous Prize. While much of Frisch's earlier work has been published, in his later years of activity he harqly took the time to shape the results of his work in an optimal way for wider circulation. Although an impressively lucid writer, he evidently gave priority to solu tions of some of the planning problems he was involved in rather than to formulating them in the characteristically crystal-clear and well-structured expositions of earlier years. I very much welcome, therefore, Dr Long's initiative to make available to a wider public within the profession some of the few texts Frisch himself produced, probably under pressure from his immediate friends and col leagues.

Book Modeling for Government and Business

Download or read book Modeling for Government and Business written by C.A. van Bochove and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume has been composed to commemorate the day, 25 years ago, that Dr. P. J. Verdoorn delivered his inaugural lecture after his appointment as professor of economics at the Netherlands School of Economics at Rotterdam. The prompt and enthusiastic reactions by several members of the profession on our request for a contribution illustrates the fact that Verdoorn is held in high esteem by those who worked with him and those who are acquainted with his work. We thank all the contributors for having helped us to realize our plan to honour Verdoorn with the publication of this 'liber amicorum'. Verdoorn was appointed part time professor of business statistics, market research and marketing in 1952. He held this post until 1969. In that year he started lectures closer related to his work as deputy director of the Central Planning Bureau: general economic research. He became full professor of macro-economic policy in 1975. Verdoorn showed a great versatility in all the fields on which he worked. Without exaggeration he may be characterised as one of the most many-sided economists in the Nether lands. However much the subjects he studied may have varied, the methods he applied show persistent characteristics: theories are formulated to yield testable hypotheses which, when they can be maintained, are made operatio nal for policy purposes. In all these phases of a research program Verdoorn showed a high level of inventivity. A combination of rigour and imagination enabled him to maintain a constant stream of high-quality publications.

Book Essays in Panel Data Econometrics

Download or read book Essays in Panel Data Econometrics written by Marc Nerlove and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects seven of Nerlove's previously published essays on panel data econometrics written over the past thirty-five years, with a new essay on the history of the subject, which began with George Biddell Airey's monograph in 1861. Since his 1966 Econometrica paper with Pietro Balestra, panel data and methods of econometric analysis have become important in the discipline. The principal factors in the research environment affecting the future course of panel data econometrics are the growth in the computational power available to the individual researcher at his desktop and the ready availability of data sets via the Internet. The best way to formulate statistical models for inference is motivated and shaped by substantive problems and our understanding of the processes generating the data at hand to resolve them. The essays illustrate the substantive context in shaping appropriate methods of inference and the increasing importance of computer-intensive methods.

Book excerpt: Professor Leif Johansen's contributions to economic science are well documented in his articles and essays for economic journals, symposium volumes and Festschrifts, all of which are to be published by North-Holland. When initiating the idea of this collection, Professor Dale W. Jorgenson also suggested a memorial volume by associates and others that would include papers devoted to research topics directly inspired by Leif Johansen. In the present volume this idea is realised. Three topics are covered: production theory, multisectoral growth models and planning. The papers presented here were either under work at the time of Leif Johansen's death or prepared especially for this volume.
