Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes in four essays various issues of political conflicts, especially secessionist and proxy conflicts. In all four essays, I apply appropriate game theoretic models in order to analyze the strategic interactions of the conflicting parties. In the first essay, I investigate the occurrence of unravelling secessions. I analyze the conditions which lead to an unravelling process of secessions. My model shows that an initial secession increases the probability of consecutive conflicts. In the second essay, I investigate the role of a third party in ethnically motivated secessions when the secessionist group's objective is to merge with the third party. I analyze the conditions for third-party intervention and analyze how the participating player's behavior depends on heterogeneity costs, tax rate, sanctions, and fighting abilities. My model shows that a third party will only intervene if the secessionist region has a disadvantage in fighting and if the third party's potential gain from annexation is sufficiently high. In the third essay, I investigate the strategic behavior in proxy contests. I analyze the third parties' willingness to provide support for their respective allies. My model shows that conflict costs are irrelevant for the players' behavior if they receive support. In the last essay, my co-authors and I investigate conflicts with symmetric and asymmetric payoff structures. We analyze the participating agents' conflict behavior and compare their behavior in conflicts with symmetric and asymmetric payoff structures. Our model shows that conflicts with an asymmetric payoff structure are fought less intensively.

Institutional failures, weak accountability mechanisms, and missed opportunities for cooperative problem-solving become the themes of the book, with the role of distributive conflicts in the persistence of dysfunctional institutions as a common thread. Special issues taken up include the institutions for securing property rights and resolving coordination failures; the structural basis of power; commitment devices and political accountability; the complex relationship between democracy and poverty (with examples from India, where both have been durable); decentralization and devolution of power; persistence of corruption; ethnic conflicts; and impediments to collective action. Formal models are largely avoided, except in two chapters where Bardhan briefly introduces new models to elucidate currently under-researched areas. Other chapters review existing models, emphasizing the essential ideas rather than the formal details. Thus the book will be valuable not only for economists but also for social scientists and policymakers.

Book excerpt: This thesis consists of an introduction and two essays. The first essay builds on the notion that revenge and hate can affect the outcomes associated with civil wars. Both hate and revenge can increase the amount of resources used for fighting. Nonetheless, due to the destruction involved in war, the possibility of bargaining exists. I analyze how hate and revenge can have different effects on the bargaining set. Hate can only make the bargaining set smaller, but revenge can eliminate the bargaining possibility altogether. Even when a group does not hate the other, its utility will be affected by the other group's hatred. The second essay considers alternative ways of compensating those who actively participate in conflict, and thus face the risk of death. In the analysis, the rich hire those with the lowest opportunity cost i.e. the poor. Hiring the poor and paying them before combat, which includes compensation for risk of death and offering them a looting contract will give different outcomes in terms of the number of people fighting and death toll. I also examine the conditions under which the equilibria are stable with respect to the methods of payment. Making the risk of death endogenous does not change the results. I also consider the case when the rich fight for themselves and compare it to the case when poor are hired to fight. By hiring the poor to fight on their behalf, rich can transfer the risk of death associated with actively participating in the war.
