Download or read book Interaction Ritual written by Erving Goffman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Not then, men and their moments. Rather, moment and their men," writes Erving Goffman in the introduction to his groundbreaking 1967 Interaction Ritual, a study of face-to-face interaction in natural settings, that class of events which occurs during co-presence and by virtue of co-presence. The ultimate behavioral materials are the glances, gestures, positionings, and verbal statements that people continuously feed into situations, whether intended or not. A sociology of occasions is here advocated. Social organization is the central theme, but what is organized is the co-mingling of persons and the temporary interactional enterprises that can arise therefrom. A normatively stabilized structure is at issue, a "social gathering," but this is a shifting entity, necessarily evanescent, created by arrivals and killed by departures. The major section of the book is the essay "Where the Action Is," drawing on Goffman's last major ethnographic project observation of Nevada casinos. Tom Burns says of Goffman's work "The eleven books form a singularly compact body of writing. All his published work was devoted to topics and themes which were closely connected, and the methodology, angles of approach and of course style of writing remained characteristically his own throughout. Interaction Ritual in particular is an interesting account of daily social interaction viewed with a new perspective for the logic of our behavior in such ordinary circumstances as entering a crowded elevator or bus." In his new introduction, Joel Best considers Goffman's work in toto and places Interaction Ritual in that total context as one of Goffman's pivotal works: "His subject matter was unique. In sharp contrast to the natural tendency of many scholars to tackle big, important topics, Goffman was a minimalist, working on a small scale, and concentrating on the most mundane, ordinary social contacts, on everyday life.'"

Book Studies in Ceremonial

Download or read book Studies in Ceremonial written by Vernon Staley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Ceremonial: Essays Illustrative of English Ceremonial In a former work, The Ceremonial of the English Church, (A. R. Mowbray & Co., Oxford, ) allusion is made, with disapproval, to certain ornaments and ceremonies which, within the last fifty years or so, seem to have been introduced without adequate authority into many English churches. These questionable things have unfortunately come to be regarded in certain quarters with approval. On this account, I have felt it desirable to investigate fully, scientifically, and historically, the matters in question. The results of such investigation, which tend to confirm the disapproval expressed in my earlier work, are placed before the reader in the following pages. An exception to this line will be found in the articles entitled, "Bowing at the Name of Jesus," and "Bowing towards the Altar." These articles are included in the present work, because of the widespread neglect which prevails in regard to these particular practices, in the face of their authorization by the English Church. My thanks are due to Dr. J. Wickham Legg, and Mr. F. C. Eeles, for considerable help in preparing this work for the press. This volume is sent forth in the hope, that it may be of some service in promoting uniformity of ceremonial, based upon true English principles, and in accordance with the authority of the English Church in this matter. Book excerpt: Tayo, a young Native American, has been a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, and the horrors of captivity have almost eroded his will to survive. His return to the Laguna Pueblo reservation only increases his feeling of estrangement and alienation. While other returning soldiers find easy refuge in alcohol and senseless violence, Tayo searches for another kind of comfort and resolution. Tayo's quest leads him back to the Indian past and its traditions, to beliefs about witchcraft and evil, and to the ancient stories of his people. The search itself becomes a ritual, a curative ceremny that defeats the most virulent of afflictions—despair.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays deals with the rituals of kingship and royalty in India, Africa and Europe from the social anthropological and ethnohistorical points of view. It discusses the dialectical entanglements of rituals conducted for and by kings (including, ‘little kings’ and ‘jungle kings’) with the wider social, political, cultural, historical, religious and economic contexts in which they were embedded. Part I begins with a triangular comparison of kingship among the Shilluks of East Africa, the Gajapatis of eastern India and kings in Renaissance France. The essay entitled the ‘King’s Three Bodies’ makes use of Ernst H. Kantorowicz’s classical study, The King’s Two Bodies in medieval political theology and extends it, not only in terms of the numbers of bodies that are found to be significant, but also theoretically. Another significant essay in this part looks at the unexpected but significant theoretical impact of social anthropological studies of acephalous, segmentary lineage societies in Africa on Indian historiography. The second part of this volume consists of three chapters dealing with the royal patronage of tribal and Hindu goddesses in Eastern India, while the third part presents studies on sleeping (and dreaming) kings and on the power of dead kings, a discussion of A.M. Hocart’s dictum that the first kings must have been dead kings. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book Ritual and Its Consequences

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on examples from many places and times, this work argues for the continuing tension across historical contexts between movements emphasizing ritual and movements emphasizing sincerity. It contends that our contemporary age has, at great risk, downplayed the importance of ritual.

The introduction to this volume considers classic rabbinic attitudes toward art and its relationship to spirituality.
