Book Perspectives in Operations Management

Download or read book Perspectives in Operations Management written by Rakesh K. Sarin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1992 a conference honoring Elwood S. Buffa was held at the Anderson Graduate School of Management of the University of California, Los Angeles. This book is a collection of the work presented at that conference. The scholars who gathered to honor El are the prominent researchers in the field of Operations Management. Their collective work published in this book represents the richness of the field and provides the reader with valuable insights into its important issues and problems. While any grouping of the articles by these distinguished scholars will be arbitrary, I have organized the book in four sections. In the first section the articles dealing with the strategic issues in Operations Management are compiled. The articles deal with continuous improvement, quality, services, supply chain management, and creating value through operations. The articles that explore the interface of Operations Management with other functional areas, e.g. engineering and marketing, are grouped in the second section. The third section of the book contains articles that attempt to model some important planning problems that arise in the management of production and operations. Some of the papers in this section provide state of the art reviews of selected topic areas. Finally, the fourth section contains articles that deal with future directions for Operations Management. The authors offer several insights into the future evolution of the field. The book begins with the keynote address given by El Buffa at the start of the conference on November 2, 1991.

Book Entrepreneurial Values and Strategic Management

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Values and Strategic Management written by V. Coda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-20 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vittorio Coda's discussion of the goals and purpose of the business enterprise illuminates the long-running debate over the goals of the firm. His conceptualization of the firm and its relationships within society transcends stale arguments over shareholders versus stakeholders by viewing the firm less as an agent of individual interests and more as an engine of social development that unifies the interests of the different participants. In articulating a model of the entrepreneurial firm embedded in a social system and a values system based upon notions of fairness and social responsibility, Coda offers an original approach to interpret the business system. The view of a socially-responsible, entrepreneurial, business sector surfacing in this book offers an attractive alternative to most of the prevailing models of market capitalism that have attracted criticism over the past decades.

Book Performance and Progress

Download or read book Performance and Progress written by Subramanian Rangan and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prevailing aspiration of business is performance, while that of society is progress. Capitalism, both the paradigm and practice, sits at the intersection of these dual aspirations, and the essays in this volume explore its fraught status there. Contributions to this volume address questions such as (i) what's the problem with capitalism?; (ii) is the problem just with the practice or with the very paradigm?; (iii) what is progress and who is responsible for it?; (iv) what evolution is required at the individual, system, and paradigm level so that enterprises and the executives who lead them may better integrate performance with progress?; and (v) whither consumers, employees, and investors in this evolution? The book offers perspectives from two distinct intellectual domains-social science and philosophy. Scholars in social science (including economics, management, and sociology) tend to study performance. Ideas of progress, on the other hand, tend to fall more under the purview of philosophers (in particular social and political philosophers). Further, to obtain an insider's view on practice and possibilities, the volume includes essays from a handful of thoughtful business leaders. Research should consider not just how to make sustainability profitable, but also how to make profitability and the modern economic system sustainable. If we are to better comprehend why the world is in protest, to reflect on progress or dilemmas of trust, we must appreciate the tenuous assumptions of modern microeconomics and markets, and hear from modern philosophers about the basis and limits of rationality.

Book A Collection of Service Essays

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers written by the author on the subject of service. They all have been peer reviewed and written for a diverse variety of reasons. Some papers have been modified to suit a general audience, and others have simply been improved. There are some formatting differences due to the basic requirements of the various venues. The subject matter can be viewed as three separate sections: introductory, foundational, and applicative. The introductory papers are quite simple and give a gentle introduction to what the discipline of service is all about. The foundational papers provide a basis for the study of the concepts and methods of the service discipline. The applicative papers are general in nature so as to provide insight to what does and can go on in the world of service. Papers 1 and 2 fall into the first category. Papers 3, 4, and 5 are in the second category, and the remainder are in the third group. The table of contents is unique in that the entries give an abstract to the respective paper. This is an aid to a selection and gives a summary of the subject matter. The papers were assembled to support two recent books on the subject of service.

Book The Shapley Value

Download or read book The Shapley Value written by Alvin E. Roth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-10-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed in honour of the sixty-fifth birthday of Lloyd Shapley, this volume makes accessible the large body of work that has grown out of Shapley's seminal 1953 paper. Each of the twenty essays concerns some aspect of the Shapley value. Three of the chapters are reprints of the 'ancestral' papers: Chapter 2 is Shapley's original 1953 paper defining the value; Chapter 3 is the 1954 paper by Shapley and Shubik applying the value to voting models; and chapter 19 is Shapley's 1969 paper defining a value for games without transferable utility. The other seventeen chapters were contributed especially for this volume. The first chapter introduces the subject and the other essays in the volume, and contains a brief account of a few of Shapley's other major contributions to game theory. The other chapters cover the reformulations, interpretations and generalizations that have been inspired by the Shapley value, and its applications to the study of coalition formulation, to the organization of large markets, to problems of cost allocation, and to the study of games in which utility is not transferable.
