Book Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association Vol 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Vol. 3 Religion, architecture; there is also, I think, a third quality, which critics have not noticed, or have treated as obvious. I mean the quality and precision of the texture out of which Greek poetry is woven. It is not merely that the actual words are finer in quality than English words, though I incline to think that this is true also. They build their palace of cedar, and we of rougher wood. But still more important is the actual precision of the building, the exact fitting of word into word with reference both to the emphasis and the rhythm. This depends greatly on the importance of quantity in Greek speech. To take one instance: it is the essence of Greek poetry that a long nu stressed syllable shall nevertheless be felt as long; and that is a rock on which English verses make Shipwreck by the thousand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Studies by Members of the English Association, Vol. 5: Collected by Oliver Elton, 1914 But this extraordinary fiction about the two rhythms still prevails; it governs Mr. Bridges' prosody, and is repeated as accepted truth in Mr. Edmund Gosse's article on 'verse in the Encyclopaedia Britannica, ninth edition, 1911. In this, the only article dealing with verse-rhythm, Lanier's name does not appear, and there is only a vague slighting reference to musical theories. But the protagonist on the anti-musical side is Professor Saintsbury. He is the author of an Historical English Prosody and of a History of English Prosody in 3 volumes (1906 The latter is the most substantial performance on the subject since Guest's History of English Rhythms, and may be taken to represent the prevailing View in the schools. Before attacking what I must con sider its shaky theoretical foundations, I would pay my tribute to its wide learning, the unfailing vigour and interest of its pages, and to the justice and discrimination that are rarely absent from its appreciation of the ejects of rhythm the principles of rhythm indeed occupy but a small part of the book. It is not likely, I may add, that the quarrel lies between different hearings of verse; it is a question of how we account for what we hear. Taking, then, Professor Saintsbury's account as more than any other the established or official doctrine, I propose to compare it with Lanier's. Book Jane Austen s Textual Lives

Download or read book Jane Austen s Textual Lives written by Kathryn Sutherland and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-10-06 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through three intertwined histories Jane Austen's Textual Lives offers a new way of approaching and reading a very familiar author. One is a history of the transmission and transformation of Jane Austen through manuscripts, critical editions, biographies, and adaptations; a second provides a conspectus of the development of English Studies as a discipline in which the original and primary place of textual criticism is recovered; and a third reviews the role of Oxford University Press in shaping a canon of English texts in the twentieth century. Jane Austen can be discovered in all three. Since her rise to celebrity status at the end of the nineteenth century, Jane Austen has occupied a position within English-speaking culture that is both popular and canonical, accessible and complexly inaccessible, fixed and certain yet wonderfully amenable to shifts of sensibility and cultural assumptions. The implied contradiction was represented in the early twentieth century by, on the one hand, the Austen family's continued management, censorship, and sentimental marketing of the sweet lady novelist of the Hampshire countryside; and on the other, by R. W. Chapman's 1923 Clarendon Press edition of the Novels of Jane Austen, which subjected her texts to the kind of scholarly probing reserved till then for classical Greek and Roman authors obscured by centuries of attrition. It was to be almost fifty years before the Clarendon Press considered it necessary to recalibrate the reputation of another popular English novelist in this way. Beginning with specific encounters with three kinds of textual work and the problems, clues, or challenges to interpretation they continue to present, Kathryn Sutherland goes on to consider the absence of a satisfactory critical theory of biography that can help us address the partial life, and ends with a discussion of the screen adaptations through which the texts continue to live on. Throughout, Jane Austen's textual identities provide a means to explore the wider issue of what text is and to argue the importance of understanding textual space as itself a powerful agent established only by recourse to further interpretations and fictions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arguenot, Vol. 3: April, 1923 At the present time there is a tendency to eliminate books from the list Of pleas ures and to seek recreation at plays or movies. This is defended in the state ment that plays or movies are easier to understand. In many instances I have found that when I had read the book first it helped me to appreciate and under stand the play more readily. Books deal with all ages and every country, thus, I can live in any age, and have access to every port in the world. They are never troublesome and any question I may ask can be answered by them, if I strive hard enough to find it. Some tell Of the history and romances Of the past, others deal with present conditions, while others deal with nature, art and the sciences. Some books in moments Of depression help me to forget there is work to be done, studies to be done, and even essays to be written. Still others teach me important lessons. All give information that will never be a burden to me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
