Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Leaves From a Note-Book The afternoon sun was warm on the five workmen there, busy upon doors and window-frames and wainscoting. A scent of pine-wood from a tent-like pile of planks outside the open door mingled itself with the scent of the elder-bushes which were spreading their summer snow close to the Open window opposite; the slanting sunbeams shone through the transparent shavings that ew before the steady plane, and lit up the fine grain of the oak panelling which stood propped against the wall. On a heap of those soft shavings a rough gray shepherd dog had made himself a pleasant bed, and was lying with his nose between his forepaws, occasionally wrinkling his brows to cast a glance at the tallest of the five workmen, who was carving a shield in the centre of a wooden mantelpiece. It was to this workman that the strong barytone belonged which was heard above the sound of plane and hammer, singing. Download or read book Leaves from a Cambridge Note Book Classic Reprint written by O. J. Dunlop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaves From a Cambridge Note-Book IT was in the Lent Term towards the time when the coming of Spring is no longer an illusion that we rose up with the first bird-call, shook the dew from laden grass-blades, and cried Good morning to the road. For Spring and the road were calling to us, and there is no gainsaying these mighty voices. They have the authority of the Universal in their tones. For the spirit of Spring is of boundless space and of all time, it pervades the country not alone, but cities and the sea. And the cry of all roads is of travel out into the four corners of the world; and strong-voiced is this Roman road of ours which has journeyed from many centuries ago, and will roll on imperturbably to aeons wrapped in the blue distance. Upon a Spring morning there is no better com rade than a road. For when Spring is in the blood, whatever age our bodies, we ourselves are young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impressions of Theophrastus Such: Essays and Leaves From a Note-Book IT is my habit to give an account to myself of the char acters I meet with: can I give any true account of my own? I am a bachelor, without domestic distractions Of any sort, and have all my life been an attentive companion to myself, flattering my nature agreeably on plausible oc casions, reviling it rather bitterly when it mortified me, and in general remembering its doings and sufferings with a tenacity which is too apt to raise surprise if not disgust at the careless inaccuracy of my acquaintances, who im pute to me Opinions I never held, express their desire to convert me to my favourite ideas, forget whether I have ever been to the East, and are capable of being three several times astonished at my never having told them before Of my accident in the Alps, causing me the nervous Shock which has ever since notably diminished my digestive powers. Surely I ought to know myself better than these indifferent outsiders can know me; nay, better even than my intimate friends, to whom I have never breathed those items of my inward experience which have chiefly Shaped my life. Book A Half century of Greatness

Download or read book A Half century of Greatness written by Frederic Ewen and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Half-Century of Greatness paints a vivid and dramatic picture of the creative thought of mid- to late nineteenth century Europe and the influence of the unsuccessful Revolutions of 1848. It reveals often unexpected links between novelists, poets, and philosophers from England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Russia, and Ukraine-especially Dickens, Carlyle, Mill, the Bront?s, and George Eliot; Hegel, Strauss, Feuerbach, Marx, Engels, Wagner, and several German poets; the Hungarian poet Sndor Petfi; Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bakunin, and Herzen in Russia, and the great Ukrainian poet Shevchenko. The book was reconstructed and edited by Dr. Jeffrey Wollock from Ewen's final manuscript. It includes the author's own reference citations throughout, a reconstructed bibliography, and an updated "further reading" list. This is Ewen's last work, the long-lost companion to his Heroic Imagination. Together, these books present a panorama of the social, political, and artistic aspects of European Romanticism, especially foreshadowing and complementing recent work on the relation of Marxism to romanticism. Anyone interested in what Lukacs called "Romantic anticapitalism," who appreciates such books as Marshall Berman's Adventures in Marxism (1999) Lwy & Sayre's Romanticism against the Tide of Modernity (2001) or E.P. Thompson's The Romantics (1997), will find the Ewen volumes a welcome addition.
