Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Historiettes Besant's early interest in French writers and French history, medizval and modern. He has described in his dutobiography how, during his term of'ojtice as Professor in the Royal College of Mauritius from 1861 to 1867, he was thrown in contact with colleagues who stimulated in him the desire to become thoroughly acquainted with French literature. In consequence he read French widely and deeply, and on his return to England made a start in his career as a man of letters by contributing essays upon his chosen subject to various magazines. These papers - a selec tion of which are published here, while others have appeared in volume form previously - attracted con siderable attention by their display of sympathetic knowledge, and secured for their author a position among his brother writers before the publication of fiction obtained for him popular recognition. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Novel and Other Essays Historical fiction suffers in France from the same discredit as historical painting, and for the same reasons. It is either too easy to be worth while - a French critic might say - or so diffi cult as to be impossible. When a young man once went to Courbet for advice, saying that his vocation was to be a historical painter, the artist promptly responded: I don't doubt it; and therefore begin by giving three months to mak ing a portrait of your father! Book Essays in American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays in American History Classic Reprint written by Henry Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in American History These essays are presented to the public in the belief that though what they contain be old, it is worth telling again, and in the hope that by viewing the early history of the country from a somewhat different standpoint from that commonly taken, light may be thrown upon places which have been sometimes left in shadow. The time has been when it was considered a duty to praise every action of the resolute men who were the early settlers of New England. In the glow of an exultant patriotism which was unwilling to see anything but beauty in the annals of their country, and in a spirit of reverence which made them shrink from observing their fathers' shortcomings, the early historians of the United States dwelt lovingly on the bright side of the colonial life, and passed over its shadows with filial reticence. Book Historical Essays and Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Essays and Studies Classic Reprint written by John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Essays and Studies Half a century ago a writer of great authority delivered the opinion that few things in history were better known than the divorce of Catharine of Aragon. Since that time the archives have been explored, and the old story which satisfied Hallam will never be told again. Mr. Brewer has done more than any other man to dispel the dark tradition, and to pour light upon an epoch which will always interest every description of educated men. After all that has been already gathered from Rome and Venice and Simancas, from Brussels and Vienna, his volume on the last and most momentous years of Wolsey's ministry embraces seven thousand letters, of which a large proportion are important and new. The most competent of his foreign critics, Dr. Pauli, reviewing the earlier part of the Calendar, declared that no other country possesses a work so satisfactory and complete; and this is not exaggerated praise, although even Mr. Brewer's analysis cannot be accepted as a substitute for the full text of documents. He has not aimed so high; and his readers will not seldom find that there is something still to learn in earlier and humbler publications. Book The Foe of Compromise and Other Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foe of Compromise and Other Essays Classic Reprint written by William Garrott Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foe of Compromise, and Other Essays Surely, they were right. The analogy of nature, common sense, the experience of man kind, crystallized in proverbs, and all the digui fied and honored usage of our human societies ranged themselves on their side. And yet, we did not rest in the peace which they had made. Their contemporary, Garrison, the abolitionist, must have known that all these things were against him; he must have felt how harshly the strife he brought into our Republic of wel fare and opportunity broke in upon the soft music which ears like Choate's were harking for. Nevertheless, he went on: and soon there was war and death and mourning in the land. Some said that the outcome proved compromise a fail ure; more said, it was the fault of Garrison and of the other extremists on both sides. There was peace again, at last: a sure peace for the Republic; surer and deeper for some hundreds of' thousands of young men in blue and gray uniforms, mourned a while by their young wives and sweethearts, -mourned without ceasing by dim-eyed mothers. The end of compromise and the end of warfare were the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays in History and Art IN offering these Essays to the public, i have removed from them any passages and allusions that were of an ephemeral nature and also, when I had written several articles on different parts of the same subject, I have recast and fused them into one. In this way three separate articles have been recast and conjoined in the essay on the National Life of China; two, in Our Indian Empire; and two, in India: its Castes and Creeds. I have also recast the middle portion of the essay on Real and Ideal Beauty, incorporat ing passages from minor papers on the same subject; and have inserted two woodcuts, illustrating the principle of harmonic proportion as exemplified in the peerless edifice of the Parthenon of Athens. Book excerpt: Henry James was the preeminent American writer of the late 19th century, a master of fiction who was also a subtle and audacious literary theorist. This volume brings together the most important of his short stories and novellas with his most significant critical writings. Selected from Library of America's authoritative five-volume edition of James's complete stories, the works collected here--among them "Daisy Miller," "The Aspern Papers," "The Beast in the Jungle," "The Turn of the Screw," and "The Great Good Place"--display his astonishing creative range, encompassing social comedy and supernatural horror, acute psychological portraiture and penetrating analysis of cultural conflict. A selection of James's criticism includes "The Art of Fiction," his declaration of the novelist's freedom, the celebrated preface to The Portrait of a Lady, and fascinating discussions of Hawthorne, Emerson, Whitman, Shakespeare, and Balzac.
