Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays and Heads of Lectures on Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, and Surgery: With a Memoir of His Life, and Copious Notes Explanatory of Modern Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, and Practice Sir Astley Cooper, the late Professor J. Gregory, Dr Carmichael Smyth, and Dr Robertson, having made honourable mention of my Father's Lectures, of which the subjoined Essays formed a part, I have been induced to publish the following Volume, in the hope that it may prove acceptable to the public, and more especially to his surviving pupils. Various notes have been added, to enable me to supply some of those deficiencies which the progress of time has pointed out, and to rectify opinions which experience has proved to be fallacious. Considerable difficulty has been experienced in this part of the work, arising chiefly from the prescribed limits of this volume; and in reviewing my Father's Book on Fishes, no notes have been added, as these alone would have filled a large volume. Book excerpt: The classic medical text known as Gray’s Anatomy is one of the most famous books ever written. Now, on the 150th anniversary of its publication, acclaimed science writer and master of narrative nonfiction Bill Hayes has written the fascinating, never-before-told true story of how this seminal volume came to be. A blend of history, science, culture, and Hayes’s own personal experiences, The Anatomist is this author’s most accomplished and affecting work to date. With passion and wit, Hayes explores the significance of Gray’s Anatomy and explains why it came to symbolize a turning point in medical history. But he does much, much more. Uncovering a treasure trove of forgotten letters and diaries, he illuminates the astonishing relationship between the fiercely gifted young anatomist Henry Gray and his younger collaborator H. V. Carter, whose exquisite anatomical illustrations are masterpieces of art and close observation. Tracing the triumphs and tragedies of these two extraordinary men, Hayes brings an equally extraordinary era–the mid-1800s–unforgettably to life. But the journey Hayes takes us on is not only outward but inward–through the blood and tissue and organs of the human body– for The Anatomist chronicles Hayes’s year as a student of classical gross anatomy, performing with his own hands the dissections and examinations detailed by Henry Gray 150 years ago. As Hayes’s acquaintance with death deepens, he finds his understanding and appreciation of life deepening in unexpected and profoundly moving ways. The Anatomist is more than just the story of a book. It is the story of the human body, a story whose beginning and end we all know and share but that, like all great stories, is infinitely rich in between.

Book excerpt: A surgeon shares true stories of life, death, and the human body in an essay collection that “will nail you to your chair” (Saturday Review). With settings ranging from the operating theater to a Korean ambulance, and topics as varied as the disposition of a corpse and the author’s own childhood, these nineteen captivating, wry, and intimate vignettes offer a poignant examination of health, humanity, and, of course, mortality. Sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous, the essays offer a physician’s viewpoint that goes beyond the medical to also consider the most meaningful issues and questions we face, whether as doctors or patients, cared for or caregiver. Praised by Kirkus Reviews as “an impressive display of knowledge and art, magic and mystery,” Mortal Lessons is a classic reflection on the human body and the human experience, and will resonate with readers for generations to come.

Book The Knife Man

Download or read book The Knife Man written by Wendy Moore and published by Broadway. This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote his gothic horror story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, he reputedly based the house of the genial doctor turned fiend on the home of the 18thC surgeon and anatomist John Hunter. The choice was understandable, for Hunter combined an altruistic determination to advance scientific knowledge with dark dealings that brought him into daily contact with the sinister Georgian underworld. In 18thC London, Hunter was a man both acclaimed and feared. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Hunter dissected thousands of human bodies, using the knowledge he gained to improve medical care for countless patients. Treating not only the poor but also some of the most illustrious characters of the time, such as Joshua Reynolds and the young Lord Byron, he was appointed Surgeon Extraordinary to King George III and served in the Seven Years War where, following long, bloody battles, he patched up the unfortunate casualties' musket wounds and bayonet injuries. Considered by many to be the father of modern surgery, Hunter was also an eminent naturalist; he dissected the first creatures brought back from Captain Cook's voyages to Australia and kept exotic animals in his country menagerie in Earls Court; his eventual thesis outlining his ideas on evolution included a passage headed, 'On the origin of species'. Written some 60 years before Darwin's famous paper, this potentially groundbreaking work was suppressed on religious grounds by the Royal Society. Ultimately, he created the largest anatomical collection of its kind u which has been called 'a museum of evolution' u still to be seen in central London. Although a leading figure of the Enlightenment, and friend to many influential men of his age, Hunter's tireless quest for human and animal bodies drove him to unparalleled extremes that immersed in the murky world of body-snatching. He paid large sums to his criminal contacts for the stolen corpses of men, women and children which were delivered in hampers to his back door.

Book Lectures on Surgical Pathology

Download or read book Lectures on Surgical Pathology written by James Paget and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Surgical Pathology: Delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons of England The Lectures in this volume, and especially those on Cancers, are enlarged far beyond their original extent, by the addition of cases, statistical tables, and various statements which may be worth reading, but of which the recital could not be made agreeable to an audience. In making these additions, I have endeavored to adduce sufficient evidence for the general conclusions I have drawn, without encumbering the book with such a mass of details as would be repulsive to the majority of readers. I can hardly imagine, that a full relation of so many cases as I have referred to would be acceptable to any besides those who are engaged in the especial study of the subjects of the Lectures. To all who are so occupied, I will very gladly give whatever further information my manuscript records of cases can supply. It is an unavoidable defect of lectures on general pathology, that they cannot be conveniently used in the study of the diseases of particular organs. I have endeavored to amend this, in some measure, by a full index, referring, under the title of each organ, to the descriptions of the tumors of which it is most apt to be the seat.
