Perhaps it has never occurred to you to ask yourself that question. Perhaps you have taken for granted that, even if you do not feel immediately equal to making one, at least you know what an essay is. Let us, at any rate, make sure of this point, at the outset; for, in making an essay, as in many other things, the first step is to know exactly what it is that you want to make. An Essay is the setting forth, the making clear, the illustration of a particular fact,1 idea, truth,2 or emotion, or of a particular group of facts, ideas, truths, or emotions, in a short written composition. Book How to Write an Essay

Download or read book How to Write an Essay written by William Trego Webb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Write an Essay: With Sample Essays and Subjects for Essays In all Examinations, whether in England or in India, the Essay is more and more being employed as a test of the ability of candidates to write clear, simple, and correct English. Thus we find, "All candidates will be expected to attempt the Essay, to which special importance is attached." To help the candidate to pass this test with some measure of success is the object of this book. The eighty "Sample Essays" do not aim at either originality or high literary merit; they are meant to represent the kind of Essay that a student might be expected to write in an Examination. And since necessarily no two writers are altogether alike in their mode of expressing themselves, the style of these essays has been to some extent diversified. They also vary in length, because in some examinations short, in others longer, Essays are required of the candidates. The chapter on spelling and Punctuation has for convenience been placed last; but a knowledge of these subjects is of course one of the first essentials to successful composition. Of the 1320 "Subjects for Essays," many have been set in various Public Examinations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essay Writing for Competitive Examinations all Types css pcs etc

Download or read book Essay Writing for Competitive Examinations all Types css pcs etc written by Agha Humayun Amin and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English essay remains a simple but subtle test of a mans mental caliber. Since essay was discovered by Sir Francis Bacon and improved and refined by countless writers, English essay has remained a good judge of any aspiring candidate for public or private sector jobs and posts. For many years the only standard of judging military staff college candidates was simply one essay from which their analytical and communication skills were judged. In competitive examinations in third world countries English Essay takes the highest toll in failures, as a subject. Thus English essay possesses the notorious distinction of being the sword of Damocles for a very large number of competitive examination candidates. The aim of this brief work is to serve as a primer or as a study aid for competitive examination candidates worldwide but more specifically South and West Asia. When I joined the Pakistan Military Academy in 1981 I discovered that English took the maximum toll of cadets who were relegated or failed in the first two terms. When I appeared and qualified in the CSS competitive examination in 1987 and 1989 I again discovered that English Essay remained CSS candidates Bermuda Triangle of failure. Mr Syed Zafar Bukhari who I met in Multan in 1987 during his attachment as a civil service academy student with Pakistan Army was very fond of discussing how CSS candidates mostly failed in English essay. My early interest in writing articles since 1977 motivated me to read great masters of essay like Francis Bacon who off course was the greatest master, as well as Montaigne, Bertrand Russell etc.
