Book excerpt: The mystery of Earth's invisible, life-supporting power Alanna Mitchell's globe-trotting history of the science of electromagnetism and the Earth's magnetic field--right up to the latest indications that the North and South Poles may soon reverse, with apocalyptic results--will soon change the way you think about our planet. Award-winning journalist Alanna Mitchell's science storytelling introduce intriguing characters--from the thirteenth-century French investigations into magnetism and the Victorian-era discover that electricity and magnetism emerge from the same fundamental force to the latest research. No one has ever told so eloquently how the Earth itself came to be seen as a magnet, spinning in space with two poles, and that those poles have dramatically reversed many time, often coinciding with mass extinctions. The most recent reversal was 780,000 years ago. Mitchell explores indications that the Earth's magnetic force field is decaying faster than previously thought. When the poles switch, a process that takes many years, the Earth is unprotected from solar radiation storms that would, among other disturbances, wipe out much and possible all of our electromagnetic technology. Navigation for all kinds of animals is disrupted without a stable, magnetic North Pole. But can you imagine no satellites, no Internet, no smartphones--maybe no power grids at all? Alanna Mitchell offers a beautifully crafted narrative history of surprising ideas and science, illuminating invisible parts of our own planet that are constantly changing around us.

Book Invisible Light Or the Electric Theory of Creation

Download or read book Invisible Light Or the Electric Theory of Creation written by George Woodward Warder and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIII. THE SCIENTIFIC EXPLANATION OP THE DELUGE. "Strange and startling coincidences are found in Genesis and geology with reference to the Cenozoic age vindicating the veracity of the revealed record. In this age a new distribution of the mass of the earth took place causing the emergence of land in the Southern Ocean, by the uplifting of the bed of the South Pacific Ocean." So says W. R. Pierce in " Genesis and Modern Science," and he continues: "Abundant evidence of such changes at this period is found in Australia, and South America. Dana, one of the greatest of modern geologists says: 'The tertiarj' movements along the Andes affected half--at least--of South America, this region undergoing an elevation of many thousands of feet.' Accompanying this emergence of the large portions of Australia and South America was doubtless the emergence also of some or all of the Australian chain of islands, and of the Antarctic lands, thus overcoming still further the superior gravity of the Northern Hemisphere and bringing the axis of the earth more nearly toward the perpendicular direction. "It was in this manner by the action of gravitation that the Arctic region once the .torrid zone, now became the frigid zone, and from this new region now of perpetual ice and snow, descended those glaciers or masses of ice which have left their debris and marked with their groovihgs and scratchings the north temperate zone around the earth. Darwin says ' what then has exterminated so many species, and whole genera whose fossil remains are found? The mind is at first irresistibly hurried into the belief of some great catastrophe, for thus to destroy animals so widely scattered we must shake the entire framework of the globe.' If man was living upon the...

Book Potential Theory in Gravity and Magnetic Applications

Download or read book Potential Theory in Gravity and Magnetic Applications written by Richard J. Blakely and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gap between the classic texts on potential theory and modern books on applied geophysics. Introductory chapters discuss potential theory with emphasis on those aspects particularly important to earth scientists, such as Laplace's equation, Newtonian potential, magnetic and electrostatic fields, conduction of heat, and spherical harmonic analysis. Later chapters apply these theoretical concepts specifically to the interpretation of gravity and magnetic anomalies, with emphasis on anomalies caused by crustal and lithospheric sources. The book is ideal for graduate students and researchers in applied geophysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “The Uninhabitable Earth hits you like a comet, with an overflow of insanely lyrical prose about our pending Armageddon.”—Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New Yorker • The New York Times Book Review • Time • NPR • The Economist • The Paris Review • Toronto Star • GQ • The Times Literary Supplement • The New York Public Library • Kirkus Reviews It is worse, much worse, than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible—food shortages, refugee emergencies, climate wars and economic devastation. An “epoch-defining book” (The Guardian) and “this generation’s Silent Spring” (The Washington Post), The Uninhabitable Earth is both a travelogue of the near future and a meditation on how that future will look to those living through it—the ways that warming promises to transform global politics, the meaning of technology and nature in the modern world, the sustainability of capitalism and the trajectory of human progress. The Uninhabitable Earth is also an impassioned call to action. For just as the world was brought to the brink of catastrophe within the span of a lifetime, the responsibility to avoid it now belongs to a single generation—today’s. LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. WILSON LITERARY SCIENCE WRITING AWARD “The Uninhabitable Earth is the most terrifying book I have ever read. Its subject is climate change, and its method is scientific, but its mode is Old Testament. The book is a meticulously documented, white-knuckled tour through the cascading catastrophes that will soon engulf our warming planet.”—Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times “Riveting. . . . Some readers will find Mr. Wallace-Wells’s outline of possible futures alarmist. He is indeed alarmed. You should be, too.”—The Economist “Potent and evocative. . . . Wallace-Wells has resolved to offer something other than the standard narrative of climate change. . . . He avoids the ‘eerily banal language of climatology’ in favor of lush, rolling prose.”—Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times “The book has potential to be this generation’s Silent Spring.”—The Washington Post “The Uninhabitable Earth, which has become a best seller, taps into the underlying emotion of the day: fear. . . . I encourage people to read this book.”—Alan Weisman, The New York Review of Books

Book If the Universe Is Teeming with Aliens WHERE IS EVERYBODY

Download or read book If the Universe Is Teeming with Aliens WHERE IS EVERYBODY written by Stephen Webb and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-10-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a 1950 conversation at Los Alamos, four world-class scientists generally agreed, given the size of the Universe, that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations must be present. But one of the four, Enrico Fermi, asked, "If these civilizations do exist, where is everybody?" Given the fact that there are perhaps 400 million stars in our Galaxy alone, and perhaps 400 million galaxies in the Universe, it stands to reason that somewhere out there, in the 14 billion-year-old cosmos, there is or once was a civilization at least as advanced as our own. Webb discusses in detail the 50 most cogent and intriguing solutions to Fermi's famous paradox.

Download or read book Not for Greens written by Ian Plimer and published by Connor Court Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processes required to make a humble stainless steel teaspoon are remarkably complicated and every stage involves risk, coal, energy, capital, international trade and finance. Stainless steel cutlery has taken thousands of years of experimentation and knowledge to evolve and the end result is that we can eat without killing ourselves with bacteria. We are in the best times to have ever lived on planet Earth and the future will only be better. All this we take for granted. Greens may have started as genuine environmentalists. Much of the green movement has now morphed into an unelected extremist political pressure group accountable to no one. Greens create problems, many of which are concocted, and provide no solutions because of a lack of basic knowledge. This book examines green policies in the light of established knowledge and shows that they are unrealistic. Policies by greens adopted by supine governments have resulted in rising costs, increased taxes, political instability, energy poverty, decreased longevity and environmental degradation and they don't achieve their ideological aims. Wind, solar and biomass energy emit more carbon dioxide than they save and reduction of carbon dioxide emissions does nothing to change climate and only empties the pocket. No stainless steel teaspoon could be made using green "alternative energy." This book argues that unless the greens live sustainably in caves in the forest and use no trappings of the modern world, then they should be regarded as hypocrites and treated with the disdain they deserve.
