Book Health Illness and Disease

Download or read book Health Illness and Disease written by Havi Carel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What counts as health or ill health? How do we deal with the fallibility of our own bodies? Should illness and disease be considered simply in biological terms, or should considerations of its emotional impact dictate our treatment of it? Our understanding of health and illness had become increasingly more complex in the modern world, as we are able to use medicine not only to fight disease but to control other aspects of our bodies, whether mood, blood pressure, or cholesterol. This collection of essays foregrounds the concepts of health and illness and patient experience within the philosophy of medicine, reflecting on the relationship between the ill person and society. Mental illness is considered alongside physical disease, and the important ramifications of society's differentiation between the two are brought to light. Health, Illness and Disease is a significant contribution to shaping the parameters of the evolving field of philosophy of medicine and will be of interest to medical practitioners and policy-makers as well as philosophers of science and ethicists.

Book Diseases of the Head

Download or read book Diseases of the Head written by Matt Rosen and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases of the Head is an anthology of essays from contemporary philosophers, artists, and writers working at the crossroads of speculative philosophy and speculative horror. At once a compendium of multivocal endeavors, a breviary of supposedly illicit ponderings, and a travelogue of philosophical exploration, this collection centers itself on the place at which philosophy and horror meet. Employing rigorous analysis, incisive experimentation, and novel invention, this anthology asks about the use that speculation can make of horror and horror of speculation, about whether philosophy is fictional or fiction philosophical, and about the relationship between horror, the exigencies of our world and time, and the future developments that may await us in philosophy itself. From philosophers working on horrific themes, to horror writers influenced by heresies in the wake of post-Kantianism, to artists engaged in projects that address monstrosity and alienation, Diseases of the Head aims at nothing less than a speculative coup d'état.Refusing both total negation and absolute affirmation, refusing to deny everything or account for everything, refusing the posture of critique and the posture of all-encompassing unification, this collection of essays aims at exposition and construction, analysis and creation - it desires to fight for some thing, but not everything, and not nothing. And it desires, most of all, to speak from the position of its own insufficiency, its own partiality, its own under-determinacy, which is always indicative of the practice of thinking, of speculation. Considering themes of anonymity, otherness and alterity, the gothic, extinction and the world without us, the end times, the apocalypse, the ancient and the world before us, and the uncanny or unheimlich, among other motifs, this anthology seeks to articulate the cutting edge which can be found at the intersection of speculative philosophy and speculative horror.Matt Rosen is a philosopher. He is the author of numerous books and pamphlets, including Speculative Annihilationism (Zero Books, 2019) and the forthcoming treatise Angst and Abnegation. His theoretical writings have also appeared in journals and anthologies. His work centers on radical ethics and alterity, and his interests range across a variety of areas, including moral philosophy, metaphysics, literature, mysticism, psychoanalysis, theology, politics, and aesthetics.

Excerpt: ...to infection and infectiousness e/ectsofa, .. T., . in general. It is this: that we assume too readily that a number of cases of illness occurring simul-; taneously, or at short intervals after one another, are caused the one by the other; while, in fact, they common cause. may be induced by a common cause. For instance, a number of cases of influenza may, each of them, be set up by exposure to cold (or heat, for these cases are common in hot weather), acting on persons whose bronchial mucous membrane is congested by improper feeding in the way suggested, and this in case after case; or they may be induced the one by the other by the passage of the infecting bacillus: or whatever the cause may be. Inasmuch as the members of a household live similarly, we can see how a predisposition to take influenza (or any other affection--bronchitis for example) may have been induced in all its members, and can hence easily understand how person after person might suffer, even although the one did not affect or infect the other. The different cases may have been successive or concomitant effects of a common cause, jis wellas cause and effect of one another. The danger, however, of confusing causes and effects with the concomitant or successive effects of a common cause is one which is always present with us in medicine, especially as regards the incidence of infectious disease. A number of persons in a household may, for example, each of them be poisoned by sewer gas which, let us suppose, enters the house and infects each person in turn with diphtheria; or, the first case, having been so caused, may have caused the second case by direct infection, and the second the third, the third the fourth, and so on. And it is possible, nay, I think it likely, .
